Avatar f tn I posted last month when my daughter had an ob and I was questioning ways of transmission. She was on acyclovir for 10 days and this ob was much less severe than the initial one. This past week, approximately 2 weeks or so from the start of her last ob, her twin brother was running a fever and said his throat was scratchy. The fever started Tuesday and would go down or away after a dose of ibuprofen. By Friday, he was better and almost back to himself.
Avatar f tn My son had is primary outbreak at 18 months and typically has an oral outbreak every few months - same spot on his lip 1 lesion, usually after a cold. He has had about 6 outbreaks in the last 60 days and the most recent was more than 4 lesions all over his bottom lip. Besides the zovirax ointment, which is difficult to administer since his lips are so sore, are their oral meds vs. topical that would be effective and safe?
Avatar f tn their provider needs to better educate himself on acyclovir. we start children on oral acyclovir suppressively from month of age upward as needed. no need for any labs or anything either from it. the arginine/lysine theory never panned out outside of the lab actually. They are even using arginine to treat herpes in research now. Children drink a lot of milk which balances it out anyways. at this point I'd seek out the advice of a pediatric dermatologist for your son.
Avatar f tn Long-term use of acyclovir for up to 10 years for HSV suppression is effective and well tolerated. Acyclovir is also approved for use in children, is available in some countries over the counter in cream formulation for herpes labialis, and has been monitored in over 1000 pregnancies. Safety monitoring data from clinical trials of valacyclovir, involving over 3000 immunocompetent and immunocompromised persons receiving long-term therapy for HSV suppression, were analyzed.
Avatar f tn give the doc a call and ask for a prescription for herpes antivirals to keep on hand for future cold sores. she can use either 1 day famvir, 1 day valtrex or 2 day acyclovir to treat cold sores. acyclovir is the cheapest option - 800mg 3x/day for 2 days.
Avatar n tn You are not in mourning for anything except your unprotected sex life ...... for people who get HSV2 it is like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted and have to now do what we should have done in the first place and that is ....played safe and protected ourselves ..... We are all in charge of what we are prepared to risk and for all of us with HSV2 we took the risk of unprotected sex and are now paying the price for that so we have no one to blame but ourselves ...
Avatar m tn virest is just a generic brand name for acyclovir. Acyclovir does not cure herpes. It impedes replication of the virus in the body but it still doesn't completely prevent shedding of the virus or stop ob's completely. It's a treatment, not a cure.
Avatar f tn I've been taking acyclovir 400mg for 6 months and have noticed my hair thinning and I've googled the heck out of it finding yes and no relations to the two. Please help me know the truth and reality of this medication. Thank you.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with herpes 17 years ago. For many years, Valtrex or Acyclovir worked miracles and then one day - they just stopped. No matter how much I took - the outbreaks kept coming back and wouldnt subside. Since then, I have been trying natural remedies as best as I can. Has this happened to anyone else? Are there other medicines on the market to try that I may not have a resistance to?
Avatar n tn Thanks for the info. Just curious, what is your background on the subject?
Avatar f tn one day i went to go check the pills she gave me because i was on birth control and wanted to know if it would affect it so i looked up the name acyclovir to find out it was for the herpes simplex virus....i freaked out and called and asked them why they gave me a pill for herpes if i didn't have that and the nurse on the phone told me that its for more than one thing and that its best not to google things cause it give me false indications.....
Avatar m tn You get much better relief from ob's by taking acyclovir 2x/day every single day. You can do this for under $20/month in the US even if you don't have insurance. Lysine doesn't help to heal ob's faster. It also doesn't suppress the virus. For acyclovir when you first start feeling an ob about to start, take either 400mg 3x/day for 5 days or 800mg 2x/day for 2 days. Both speed healing at the same rate.
Avatar f tn Grace I would like to know if caffeine is a trigger to a herpes outbreak. The reason why is because I have been drinking coffee for a while I usually don't I had three outbreaks last month. However I have been off acyclovir for a 13 months. I had HSV2 for 4 years and 5 months now my OBGYN said that I shouldn't be experiencing that many outbreaks being that I have had the virus for some time she's saying that is too many outbreaks.
Avatar m tn Hi all. I have had herpes 2 in my genitals for two years now and my girlfriend recently went to the gynecologist and asked about risks associated with having sex with me, etc. She mentioned that I experience between 8 and 10 outbreaks per year and her gynecologist suggested that I may have another underlying condition, infection perhaps that results in so many outbreaks. Last month a started taking 800mg of acyclovir daily to see if that would reduce my outbreaks and shedding.
Avatar m tn i started taking acyclovir a few days ago for the first time for a mild cold sore breakout. 2 days after i started, the cold sores got more intense, and 2 new huge cold sores came up out of nowhere. i have 3 more days left of the medication, and i'm going to keep taking it, but what should i do? these cold sores are not going away, and it seems like its getting worse! so done with these friggin things...
Avatar f tn My acyclovir says to take 400mg a day for suppressive and 400mg 2xday for 7days for ob. But she let's me change my script to suit me. Should I up the dosage to 2400mg for 2days for ob & 800 a day for suppressive?????
Avatar m tn My boyfriend and I are planning to go further into the relationship, and however I would like to do the most that I can to prevent him of getting the virus from me. I have stand-by pills of acyclovir with me for around 5 outbreaks that I can remember. Could you advise help to advise on how much of the dosage that I will need to take for suppressive treatment, and how long will it take to start to be effective? Thanks in advance for the help.
Avatar m tn Does Acyclovir make anyone else feel completely terrible? I get terrible headaches, dizzy, diarrhea and feel just awful. im not sure which is worse sometimes.
Avatar f tn I was recently diagnosed with herpes, (apparently I'm one of the people who have had it for a long time and did not know it) and was given Valtrex to take to help with the outbreak. I have finished this and am now ready to start suppressive medication daily. My gyn has suggested taking 500mg of valtrex daily and my family docotor suggested taking 200mg daily of Acyclovir.
Avatar f tn I also had the typical symptoms of flu, body ache, swollen glands/genitalia howerever, no pain in the mouth or genital area or outbreak. I started taking 400 mg of acyclovir 5x a day for 10 days ending Feb 6/13 ( he filled his scpript for me) I went to the Dr on Feb 5th and was tested for HSV1 & 2 @ the hospitals lab. I called for results on Feb 11, the nurse said it was negitave then in the same breath said it was positive. I asked for both HSV 1& 2?
