Acyclovir in pregnant women

Common Questions and Answers about Acyclovir in pregnant women

zovirax

Avatar f tn The blood levels of drugs in pregnant women often are less than half what they would be otherwise. Acyclovir and valacyclovir are harmless to pregnant women and to a fetus at 20+ weeks, so there is no reason to not administer as much acyclovir (or valacyclovir) as it takes to be effective.
Avatar f tn Glad to hear the main herpes symptoms are finally improving. Acyclovir is one of the least toxic of all prescription medicines and is virtually free of side effects. I strongly doubt it is the cause of your weakness etc. Probably it's the herpes itself, or just being pregnant (many women are "drained" during the last third of their normal pregnancies), or both. Or something else, including depression or anxiety over this situation.
Avatar f tn Hello, I've had herpes since I was a teenager (HSV-2, I believe, based on the overall frequency of the outbreaks). For years, the outbreaks were occasional and moderate -- itchy, then painful, lasting for several days, then going away completely. In my 30's, the outbreaks became quite rare, but I started taking Acyclovir to protect my partner (he never got it).
Avatar f tn My concern is that i see conflicting things about the safety of acyclovir while pregnant on the internet, some sites say its safe others say it's not approved by FDA to use while pregnant and so should be avoided. But why would doctors, including my own, offer it (or Valtrex) as an option if it's not safe? Oh, also, what is the usually dosage amount that is considered safe while pregnant? I've seen 400mg 3x a day, but not sure if this amount is ok while pregnant?
Avatar m tn I did have a bad spout of cold sores this past 5 month so my doctor gave me acyclovir. My cold sores do hurt. The scab in my genital area does not flake like my cold sores do. It more less just gets smaller. I take acyclovir as a daily suppressant. I am wondering if what I am describing as a chance of herpes? If I am on dailly acyclovir does that help me with resistant of HSV2 infection? Keep in mind I do have a high anxiety of herpes and HIV.
Avatar f tn I am 3 months pregnant.. Now I had chicken pox so Doctor advised to take acyclovir 200 mg , 3 times... Anyone knows about it..
Avatar n tn from 8 week to 12 week I was under high dose of acyclovir. I had a herpes break out and also 2 weeks after I got chicken pox. Therefore I went through longer acyclovir course. Then I had my test at 14 week. It was a P24 antigen and antibody test (Hiv duo test) It came back negative but I'm still worried as high dose of acyclovir might alter the result. Will it effect the virus replication and antibody production?
233552 tn?1228319699 The ER doctor just looked at it and said it was shingles. He also had another doctor come in and she said the same thing. It's on my right arm and goes up my should to my back. It's kinda in a line. They said I could take Valtrex (my fav med) but since I'm now PREGNANT I have stopped taking all meds. There has been no studies with pregnant women so I don't want to take anything. It took us tooooo long to get pregnant for me to mess it up in anyway.
Avatar n tn I am thinking of doing another Test in 6 months because I believe Acyclovir could of alter a false negative. I was reading that in HIV postive women Acyclovir reduces the viral load in there vagnia.
Avatar f tn I'm sorry to hear that. I'm guessing some of the women you've been with have been on the birth control pill. There is about the same chance that you'd get herpes from her as the chance that you'd get a woman pregnant if she's on the pill. If she takes it like most women do - not at the same time every day, etc., then you have a higher chance getting her pregnant on the pill than getting herpes.
Avatar n tn Has anyone noticed that there is a shortage of Acyclovir in the US? I live on the East coast and have found that it is very hard to get my prescription re-filled. I take 400mg x2 a day for suppression and I have only been able to get 200mg. With some difficulty I might add. It isn't the end of the world but I am concerned about the supply in a month when I go for another re-fill. I read on the FDA web site that there is currently a shortage. http://www.fda.
Avatar n tn My question is why would I get blisters a second time in 2 weeks? Since it is a weekend, should I start the Acyclovir again, and can it do me any harm if I do? Being a weekend, I can't get in touch with the physician, and I now have 2 opposing medical opinions, from my physician to stop the Acyclovir, and one from the physician at the urgent care clinic on 8/26 to start the medication again. Thanks for your help.
Avatar m tn I am taking 400mg Acyclovir daily. What is the most effective dosage. I am in a 3rd world country that doesnt speak english, no way can i go to a clinic here. This forum will have to be my clinic.
Avatar f tn I'd follow up in a few weeks after you've completed your treatment for yeast and get a proper work up for yeast and bacterial infections vaginally too. bv doesn't present with symptoms in 1/2 of women who have it, it's very common and it's known to make hsv2 more active. It's well worth the time for most women.
Avatar n tn The severity of the out break has also increased significantly extremely painful nothing like before. The medication acyclovir doesn.t seem to be helping the out breaks are lasting about 2 weeks to resolve completely. Why is this happening? Is it age related?( i just turned 38) Can it be related to my diet? (transitioning to veganism)What kind of specialist or doctor can i consult?(my ob/gyn is clueless) the same thing is happening to my husband.
Avatar f tn I was first on acyclovir, but it caused me to break out in hives! My Dr thought it was odd because they had never seen anyone allergic to it. That's when they prescribed me famvir.
Avatar f tn I know how hard it is to stand on ur feet. Like with me my iron is low and I can't take the pills it makes me sick. But because of that I get dizzy and have passed out before while standing in line. I think other women might have the same problem so I let them in front of me. It's not special treatment its being thoughtful!
Avatar n tn would just put me on Valtrex. I read the Valtrex website and the drug has not had full testing on pregnant women. This does not make me feel comfortable. Should I ask the Dr. to retest? Should my husband get tested? If the 2nd test comes up high, should I request a C-section to prevent any transfer of the virus to the baby since I don't feel comfortable taking any type of non tested drug during my pregnancy?
Avatar m tn You get much better relief from ob's by taking acyclovir 2x/day every single day. You can do this for under $20/month in the US even if you don't have insurance. Lysine doesn't help to heal ob's faster. It also doesn't suppress the virus. For acyclovir when you first start feeling an ob about to start, take either 400mg 3x/day for 5 days or 800mg 2x/day for 2 days. Both speed healing at the same rate.
Avatar f tn I stopped taking acyclovir in December 2011. I have had numerous outbreaks like once a month or every couple of months. I have had HSV2 four years and four months now. My last outbreak was maybe eight weeks ago. Shouldn't my outbreaks decrease since I have had the virus for some time.I would like to know is that too many outbreaks to be experiencing.
Avatar m tn The medicines are considered very safe in pregnancy, and the protocol is that women with HSV 2 infection, with or without symptoms, get suppressed, not just women with symptoms. If I were you and your wife, I would insist on daily therapy because everything you have read says you can shed the virus without symptoms and you want the most protection possible.
Avatar m tn We took a 3 day break from sex then repeated the 3 times a day the following weekend. The raw feeling in my penis got worse to the point I went to the dr. It literally felt like I had a raw sore, but nothing was there. She confirmed everything looked normal, but said it was probably herpes based on my symptoms and my girlfriend's status. She prescribed acyclovir, which I didn't start taking yet.
Avatar f tn Will every optholmologist are aware of HSV I in eyes? Are there any medication specifically for HSV I in eyes? I am planning to take suppressive theraphy for HSV I and HSV II (Acyclovir for 3 times a day - 7 days a month - for 6 months). Will that suffice for this also?
Avatar n tn Hi there, In November 2008, my boyfriend kissed me when he had a visible coldsore on his lip. 24 hours later I had one come up on my lip, but with it came 3 blisters in my mouth (on my tongue & gums). From the day I caught these cold sores, I've hardly had a single day without them. They are rarely on the outside of my mouth though, but always on the inside.
