Avatar m tn Cold sores are caused by the Herpes simplex virus type 1 not by Herpes zoster. Yes Herpes zoster can cause skin lesions on the face and eye. But you describe classic cold sore caused by Herpes simplex. It is quite common and about 80% of adults have it. It does go away sooner if you use a topical or pill form of acyclovir. If you really want to know, best to get it cultured. Acyclovir will help clear it up.
Avatar m tn we treat herpes simplex and herpes zoster with the same medications. it's just a matter of dose.
Avatar m tn A Doctor told me it was disseminated Herpes Zoster. Another one told me it was not Herpes Zoster. However I took acyclovir and pregabalin. The blisters had gone completely but I still have some pain (not constant) in the foot after 4 weeks. Honestly and due the nature and locations of the lesions, I'm not completely sure it was Herpes Zoster. My blood tests were OK, and also no positive HIV.
Avatar n tn Hi Dear What are the signs and symptoms you are experiencing? Shingles (Herpes Zoster) is caused by varicella zoster virus (responsible for causing chicken pox also). Shingles does not occur in the genital areas. However, a virus belonging to the same family, herpes simplex virus can cause genital herpes involving labia, which is a common and highly contagious disease transmitted from one person to the other through sexual activity.
Avatar f tn I previously had a pap that came back abnormal, which resulted in cellular changes consistent with herpes simplex virus. I have never had any sysmptoms to indicate this. They prescribe me acyclovir now I am experiencing a bloody discharge? Can this be a sign of active HSV? Or should I go get a second opinion?
Avatar n tn I went to see a doctor, who prescribed me acyclovir. It in fact worked very well and the rashes were gone in a week after i started taking the medicines. I read that shingles is mostly common in those who are above 50 years old, with HIV, or it may also cause because of stress. It freaked me out cause I am just 28 years old, so i went for HIV testing and it was negative. I am now curious to know if it is common to have shingles at this age, what could have possibly caused shingles on me?
Avatar m tn I have had two outbreaks of Shingles, herpes zoster. My first was when I was in my early 20s and was on my stomach and back on my right side. The second case was last year, age 42, and was on my shoulder, neck, and face right side. This was very uncomfortable and lasted for about 6 months. I did some research and found out about the immunization, zostavax, for shingles. My question - 1) The handbook said zostavax is for people over age 60.
Avatar n tn But i did find out that i have Herpes zoster antibodies ( i had Acyclovir for a week and it came down to 6 - normal levels ).. Normal TsH levels, normal ESR levels ( 12).. Low ferretin levels, low Vitamin D levels - we had iron & cholocalciferol medications, but did not seems to help. I never had any other symptoms like swollen lymph glands, or fever or nausea or dizziness or hospitalised etc..
368646 tn?1208393887 I have Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, caused by reactivation of the Varicella Zoster Virus, also known as Herpes Zoster. It is my understanding that acyclovir, which I have taken, does not KILL the herpes virus. It prevents it from multiplying which allows the body the opportunity to fight the virus and heal. It is effective when the rash, cold sore, vesicle is visible (virus is active) and can be used as a suppression dosing.
Avatar m tn The typical one sided rash and numbness can occur with Shingles, also known as Herpes Zoster or Zoster. It is a medical condition characterized by the development of painful blisters on the skin and numbness or odd sensations in the nerve involved. Zoster is caused by the 'Varicella Zoster Virus' which is also responsible for causing chickenpox. The virus can lie dormant and can get reactivated at intervals producing symptoms. Hence there is no permanent cure.
572909 tn?1218268531 First you should be on an oral antiviral such as acyclovir, famvir or valcef. Second it would be very unlikely that you would have Herpes Zoster on two different places like you back and eye. You should consider leaving your contacts out and just wearing your glasses until the shingles has dried up and gone away.

Avatar n tn It is creating sciatica down my legs. I also have a cutting sensation in the vagina at times and a feeling of something moving in the last 7 inches of my lower spine. The Valtrex will knock it out but it will return in a few wks. Very uncomfortable. Has anybody else experienced these symptoms of sciatica from herpes and pain inside vagine?
Avatar m tn You should have told me your partner had already seen a dermatologist and that your partner is being treated with acyclovir. The way you asked the question suggested the diagnosis of herpes zoster (shingles) was your partner's suspicion, not a professional diagnosis. It makes a big difference. The dermatologist is the person to ask about diagnostic tests. That the derm doc recommended acyclovir indicates s/he believed your partner had shingles.
Avatar f tn My blood work last week indicates I have not contracted the disease. I have had shingles and recurrent herpes zoster outbreaks on my eyelid. Both were very painful, and I do not wish to add genital herpes to my experience. My questions are: 1. What is the risk of contracting herpes over the long term? I understand the m to f transmission is 10%/year, but how does that translate to multiple years (50% in 5 years?)? 2. Just how bad is this disease?
Avatar m tn I am 29, have recently suffered from shingles and treated with Acyclovir. During my infection, the urologist ran a blood test to look for antibodies of other types of herpes.
Avatar n tn I had a sore throat for a week, before a rash appeared on the right side of my face. I went immediately to an urgent care clinic wen I saw the rash in a mirrow, was diagnosed with herpes zoster opthalmalicus (a recurrence of chickenpox from 49 years ago-- my second attack, the first was at age 28 -25 years ago). I'm taking Valtrex the last 80 hours, & the sores are going away, but only now is the sensitive scalp coming in.
Avatar m tn But between Day 70 and Day 73 for 4 days I had taken Acyclovir tablets orally [800 mg x 4 times x 4 days] as advised by a doctor who suspected I had got herpes zoster after some lesion appeared on my belly. I took Acyclovir tablet again for 3 days [800 mg x 4 times x 3 days] between Day 77 and Day 79. My questions: 1. I found some 2010 US research reports that suggest that Acyclovir taken orally brings down the HIV viral load. Here's one related report: http://news.bbc.co.
1122973 tn?1269732128 Ive had weak muscles and been itchy all over with weird bumps in my skin (arms, legs.) is this skin herpes? or herpes related? I NEED HELP....i dont know WTF to do. Why continue medication if I have had...NO OUTBREAKS EVER? ?
55646 tn?1263660809 After years of nothing new in herpes research, everything is new right now. Nationally, there are at least three different studies beginning for the treatment of genital herpes. First, the Genocea phase one (first in humans) trial. Instead of an oral medication to treat herpes, Genocea out of Boston has taken the approach of stimulating the immune system to respond more robustly to the herpes virus in people who are already infected with the virus.
Avatar n tn If you ever had chicken pox, you have herpes zoster (shingles virus) in your system. But unless you are having an outbreak, you will test negative for herpes zoster. Same with herpes 1 and herpes 2. So someone who has genital or oral herpes will test negative if they don't have an outbreak. The tests are unreliable and have to be done at a precise moment during an outbreak to catch a positive result. It's likely that when you were tested, you didn't catch that moment.
