Common Questions and Answers about Acyclovir genital herpes dosage

zovirax

Avatar n tn I unfortunately have oral and genital herpes (I've only had one partner so, yes, it only takes once!). Anyway, I keep reading that for suppression valtrex is once a day and acyclovir is 400 mg twice a day. My dr prescriped 800mg once a day. What's the difference, why would someone take acyclovir twice a day when they could just take it once? Is there an advantage to taking it twice a day? My second question is that when I am having an outbreak should I increase the dosage?
Avatar f tn s and viral shedding, the once daily doses of acyclovir were not effective. the half life of acyclovir is very short and just taking it daily is not enough to keep the virus under control adequately.
Avatar n tn Can genital or simplex herpes cause Postherpetic Neuralgia? I had a severe herpes outbreak (8 blisters everywhere) beginning April 24 when my eye doctor took me off of Acyclovir after nine years. The Acyclovir was used to prevent further flares in my left eye from Herpes Iritis. Now I am suffering from pain in the muscle and tingling in my right arm. There was a blister in that area which has now healed.
Avatar m tn I started having very mild genital herpes outbreaks about eight months ago, and for this outbreak (only one small blister) I decided to take acyclovir tablets and acyclovir cream. I have no pain or itching. I have taken it for a day and a half, 200 mg every 4 hours, omitting the nighttime dose. My blister is pretty much gone, and Im wondering, would it be okay to stop taking the acyclovir? I read everywhere that Im supposed to take it for 5 days, but is it for the same reason as antibiotics?
Avatar f tn I have been taking different doses of Acyclovir over the past 2 months to get control of the virus and it gets better but does not go away completely. Should I switch meds? Would it be harmful to just increase the dosage of Acyclovir for a longer period as it's recommended for just 10 days.
Avatar f tn Sorry to be so confusing. Our son has NEVER had an experience of genital herpes, and is not convinced that he has it now. Being a hyponcondriac he would have noticed any past lesions, especially had they been on the genitals.. He would be devastated, coupled with his other health issues.
55646 tn?1263660809 Nationally, there are at least three different studies beginning for the treatment of genital herpes. First, the Genocea phase one (first in humans) trial. Instead of an oral medication to treat herpes, Genocea out of Boston has taken the approach of stimulating the immune system to respond more robustly to the herpes virus in people who are already infected with the virus.
Avatar f tn I have had genital herpes for several years over 10. I get maybe about 1-3 outbreaks per year. I don't always take suppressive therapy, but recently I started then stopped, then I had a mild outbreak the week before last. I took one Acyclovir pill that day then twice a day for about 3-4 days, not sure of the dosage, but the outbreak seemed to be going away, then today I felt the pain again. The outbreak is still there but much smaller.
Avatar f tn I am 23 and I was diagnosed with HSV-1 in mid-December. My diagnosis was by culture. (It was also clear-cut because I've had only one partner--10 days before my outbreak he had a cold sore on his lip and performed oral sex on me). SInce then, I've had a raised line or paper cut lesion appear on the inside of the left labia about every 1-2 weeks.
Avatar f tn I am about two weeks after my first genital Herpes outbreak. last Monday I finished the Acyclovir dosage the Dr recommended, I have still enough pills for another four days of treatment that she prescribed on purpose. During the week there was a significant improvement and i thought it was over, but yesterday started a small itch that got abit stronger today after a long day of work. shall I start the extra pills again just in case?
Avatar m tn The reason I asked if this is herpes is because I have been taking Acyclovir for more than 5 days now, and what is suspected to be small herpes bumps on my genital still have not seemed to burst. And I have never experienced any kind of pain from the infected site. I wonder if you can tell me if genital herpes outbreak will always hurt? And when would herpes bumps usually burst considering that I took Acyclovir daily?
Avatar n tn you mean acyclovir does not suppress genital herpes? i am wondering whether being on acyclovir could be making it harder for me to determine whether i've contracted genital herpes (either by suppressing symptoms, or affecting tests). It sounds like it DOES affect blood testing...? I guess I have to endure the symptoms until enough time passes for a conclusive test. (12-16 weeks?) Or until some other symptom manifests itself (God forbid). But ...
Avatar f tn Hi so I know there are a lot of questions on the topic but this is my story. I went to Mexico to get tested for stds (on june 1, 2012) because I had a genital wart and was not sure what it was at the time all tests were negative except for hpv and hsv 2. For hpv I had type 11 and for hsv 2 I had positive 1.3. Shortly after my doctor prescribed acyclovir 200mg 4x a day.

Please let me know am I on the right path to control herpes, what is the increasing trend in hsv 1 igg signify. My sugar, liver and kidney have normal results now.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with genital Herpes in April 2010. Prior I was experiencing outbreaks it started in August 2008 I thought that they were genital warts because I was diagnosed with that in 1999 and I was treated with aldara. However warts did seem to recur years later but they were minor outbreaks not every month.
Avatar m tn Sorry I confused the type of HSV, mine is genital herpes, so it's supposed to be type-2
Avatar n tn Oh and I should add that only oral herpes type 1 is a risk for Bell's Palsy. Genital herpes is not a cause of it.
Avatar f tn My concern is that i see conflicting things about the safety of acyclovir while pregnant on the internet, some sites say its safe others say it's not approved by FDA to use while pregnant and so should be avoided. But why would doctors, including my own, offer it (or Valtrex) as an option if it's not safe? Oh, also, what is the usually dosage amount that is considered safe while pregnant? I've seen 400mg 3x a day, but not sure if this amount is ok while pregnant?
Avatar f tn my doc check the report he told me its genital herpes simplex-I. what should i do now? taking medicine but not fully cured yet/// still pain in my penies. Feeling tired always.
Avatar m tn Genital HSV-1 sheds less than Genital HSV-2. Genital HSV-1 sheds about 3-5% of days a year. Oral HSV-1 sheds more. When talking about transmission some people go years before having transmission to their partner. For example we had a regular poster here who said it took 5 years of a very active oral sex life for her BF to transmit his oral herpes to her genitals. 2. For most STD's yes. When it comes to herpes it only reduces risk about 30%.
Avatar f tn I was visually diagnosed in 2008 with genital herpes (of course the nurse took a swab of the leison) and put me on 200mg of Acyclovir 5x's a day for 2 weeks. After that initial outbreak, I hadn't had an outbreak for 3 mos and then POW another one. Initially I was treated by my campus clinic for the first two outbreaks, but soon there after I returned home and informed my personal GYN.
