Avatar m tn My boyfriend and I are planning to go further into the relationship, and however I would like to do the most that I can to prevent him of getting the virus from me. I have stand-by pills of acyclovir with me for around 5 outbreaks that I can remember. Could you advise help to advise on how much of the dosage that I will need to take for suppressive treatment, and how long will it take to start to be effective? Thanks in advance for the help.
Avatar f tn Valtrex is more convenient - usually a once a day dose - and though a generic is available now, it is generally more expensive then acyclovir. Acyclovir is inexpensive, but is a twice a day dose. For some, convenience is more important, and for others, cost is. No right or wrong answer - up to you. Also make sure that you don't have another infection, like yeast or bacterial vaginosis, that is causing you to have more outbreaks. Secondary infections can wreak havoc on herpes.
Avatar f tn I know ice (applied early on) and l-lysine also help with cold sores, not sure about genital herpes. If you stay on the acyclovir, I would recommend a low dose even if it takes a few extra days to heal up.
Avatar m tn Hello all , just wondering if I have sex with someone what are the chances of me passing my hsv2 genital herpes to a woman , I am on suppressive therapy 200mg acyclovir twice daily and also will ofcourse use a condom and no outbreak present ?
55646 tn?1263660809 Nationally, there are at least three different studies beginning for the treatment of genital herpes. First, the Genocea phase one (first in humans) trial. Instead of an oral medication to treat herpes, Genocea out of Boston has taken the approach of stimulating the immune system to respond more robustly to the herpes virus in people who are already infected with the virus.
Avatar m tn zostex is used for herpes zoster and as far as I know not related with genital herpes, he said it was also an untiviral for hsv ? is that true? should I use it till the results come out?
Avatar n tn you only take acyclovir daily for cold sore prevention? it isn't effective as a once daily treatment for herpes. being on acyclovir suppressively will mess up testing for hsv2. that said, this encounter was only oral sex so you really were never at risk for hsv2. blood testing for std's a few days post encounter was inaccurate. most of the std's you were at risk for can't be tested for via blood as well as you tested too early.
Avatar m tn I started having very mild genital herpes outbreaks about eight months ago, and for this outbreak (only one small blister) I decided to take acyclovir tablets and acyclovir cream. I have no pain or itching. I have taken it for a day and a half, 200 mg every 4 hours, omitting the nighttime dose. My blister is pretty much gone, and Im wondering, would it be okay to stop taking the acyclovir? I read everywhere that Im supposed to take it for 5 days, but is it for the same reason as antibiotics?
Avatar f tn s usually necessary for treatment of initial herpes to continue longer than 7 days. It should continue for at least 5-7 days after significant improvement starts.
Avatar n tn I was originally prescribed 400 mg of acyclovir twice daily for suppression of my herpes type 2. Recently, I asked my doctor to increase my dosage to 800 mg of acyclovir twice daily. Is there any negatives associated with taking a higher dose than what is normally prescribed for suppression. Also, are there any benefits to taking a higher dose regularly for suppression like less shedding?
Avatar f tn If we do have unprotected sex can I reduce the risk of transmitting this completely to her if I take Acyclovir for a few days prior and have no visible symptoms?
Avatar n tn The decrease in bioavailability is believed to be a function of the dose and not the dosage form. It was demonstrated that acyclovir is not dose proportional over the dosing range 200mg to 800mg.
Avatar m tn I have had herpes simplex type 2 (genital) for about 2.5 years. Acyclovir and lysine have reduced outbreaks dramatically. If I have unprotected sex with a partner who has been tested for herpes simplex 2 ( the test results indicate that exposure was quite awhile ago), will I risk causing my partner to have an outbreak? Will my partner's herpes cause me to have an outbreak?
Avatar n tn Statistically we know that most genital HSV-1 infections come from receipt of oral sex from a partner who has oral herpes, that when HSV-1 occurs in the genital region it recurs less than genital HSV-2, has less associated asymptomatic shedding of the virus and thus is less likely to lead to traqnsmission to other partners, either through oral sex by an uninfected partner or genital sex.
Avatar m tn indeed she has changed that section a lot I see. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3332182/ is a terrific article to print out and take with you that lists the doses for acyclovir ( the valtrex dose appears to be a typo - it's supposed to be 500mg twice a day ). http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.
Avatar f tn Hi, I have had 3 cortisone injections for nasal swelling and pain due to allergies. I have also been on Acyclovir for a year, to manage Herpes II infection. Also have sudden hearing loss and tinnitus in R ear diagnosed as viral, possibly herpes. After the last cortisone injection in January '09, I am having a genital herpes flareup which does not seem to be responding to Famcyclovir treatment. Also sores in my mouth. Am I possibly having a Herpes flareup due to the cortisone injections?
Avatar n tn ve been reading and see that several doctors state that it is impossible for it to be herpes if it has not broke out in the genital area. I have never had an outbreak near either part of my genitalia - THANK GOD. These outbreaks on my butt cheeks are very itchy in the beginning and if I do not start taking my Valtrex immediately will become larger and get very painful making it very hard to sit in a chair. They are always in a small circle that look like several little small circles.
Avatar f tn I have had genital herpes for several years over 10. I get maybe about 1-3 outbreaks per year. I don't always take suppressive therapy, but recently I started then stopped, then I had a mild outbreak the week before last. I took one Acyclovir pill that day then twice a day for about 3-4 days, not sure of the dosage, but the outbreak seemed to be going away, then today I felt the pain again. The outbreak is still there but much smaller.
