Common Questions and Answers about Dosage of acyclovir for genital herpes

zovirax

Avatar n tn The decrease in bioavailability is believed to be a function of the dose and not the dosage form. It was demonstrated that acyclovir is not dose proportional over the dosing range 200mg to 800mg.
Avatar f tn I have been taking different doses of Acyclovir over the past 2 months to get control of the virus and it gets better but does not go away completely. Should I switch meds? Would it be harmful to just increase the dosage of Acyclovir for a longer period as it's recommended for just 10 days.
Avatar m tn Thank you Grace, I kind of knew that it doesn't matter how I get the 400mg as long as I get the dosage of 400mg it is fine. However, My question was more about the splitting of the 800mg tablet. I was informed by a pharmacist that if a medication tablet does not have a designed split in it, the dosage may possibly not be equally distributed in the tablet therefore when you split it you might not get equal dosage.
55646 tn?1263660809 Nationally, there are at least three different studies beginning for the treatment of genital herpes. First, the Genocea phase one (first in humans) trial. Instead of an oral medication to treat herpes, Genocea out of Boston has taken the approach of stimulating the immune system to respond more robustly to the herpes virus in people who are already infected with the virus.
Avatar m tn My boyfriend and I are planning to go further into the relationship, and however I would like to do the most that I can to prevent him of getting the virus from me. I have stand-by pills of acyclovir with me for around 5 outbreaks that I can remember. Could you advise help to advise on how much of the dosage that I will need to take for suppressive treatment, and how long will it take to start to be effective? Thanks in advance for the help.
Avatar m tn I am advised now to increase acyclovir dosage to 3 times a day and have levamisole hydrochloride 75 gms twice a week for another 3 months and check for HSV1 igg again. Please let me know am I on the right path to control herpes, what is the increasing trend in hsv 1 igg signify. My sugar, liver and kidney have normal results now.
Avatar m tn I started having very mild genital herpes outbreaks about eight months ago, and for this outbreak (only one small blister) I decided to take acyclovir tablets and acyclovir cream. I have no pain or itching. I have taken it for a day and a half, 200 mg every 4 hours, omitting the nighttime dose. My blister is pretty much gone, and Im wondering, would it be okay to stop taking the acyclovir? I read everywhere that Im supposed to take it for 5 days, but is it for the same reason as antibiotics?
Avatar f tn Our son has NEVER had an experience of genital herpes, and is not convinced that he has it now. Being a hyponcondriac he would have noticed any past lesions, especially had they been on the genitals.. He would be devastated, coupled with his other health issues.
Avatar m tn ve only had oral outbreaks so far, i asked the doctor for acyclovir and he gave me a prescription for 800mg tablets and to take them 2x daily for a total dose of 1600mg everyday as supressive therapy. i'm concerned this is too high a dose? i thought it should be 400mg and take 2x daily for a total dose of 800mg? it was an ER doctor that gave it to me because i don't have health insurance and went to the county hospital.
Avatar m tn I was not taking acyclovir at this stage and also went celibate for the latter 3 years. I found that within a day or two of stopping the crystal meth, the lesions would appear very violently and last 2 weeks. This cycle went on and on the 3rd year i was on the methamphet for 3 month stretches and never got lesions. Well, i had to emigrate to escape the meth problem and now i am settled elsewhere, have been off drugs, in the gym and eating well. The Herpes has attacked me relentlessly.
Avatar f tn I have had genital herpes for several years over 10. I get maybe about 1-3 outbreaks per year. I don't always take suppressive therapy, but recently I started then stopped, then I had a mild outbreak the week before last. I took one Acyclovir pill that day then twice a day for about 3-4 days, not sure of the dosage, but the outbreak seemed to be going away, then today I felt the pain again. The outbreak is still there but much smaller.
Avatar f tn I am 23 and I was diagnosed with HSV-1 in mid-December. My diagnosis was by culture. (It was also clear-cut because I've had only one partner--10 days before my outbreak he had a cold sore on his lip and performed oral sex on me). SInce then, I've had a raised line or paper cut lesion appear on the inside of the left labia about every 1-2 weeks.
Avatar f tn t know. If you were my patient, I would suggest that you take no herpes medicine for three months and, since you had a low positive the first time, get a western blot as you may well get another low positive since you are taking no medicine.
Avatar f tn last Monday I finished the Acyclovir dosage the Dr recommended, I have still enough pills for another four days of treatment that she prescribed on purpose. During the week there was a significant improvement and i thought it was over, but yesterday started a small itch that got abit stronger today after a long day of work. shall I start the extra pills again just in case?
Avatar m tn The reason I asked if this is herpes is because I have been taking Acyclovir for more than 5 days now, and what is suspected to be small herpes bumps on my genital still have not seemed to burst. And I have never experienced any kind of pain from the infected site. I wonder if you can tell me if genital herpes outbreak will always hurt? And when would herpes bumps usually burst considering that I took Acyclovir daily?
Avatar m tn The recommended dosage for the last weeks of pregnancy is not specified in the handbook :(
Avatar n tn you only take acyclovir daily for cold sore prevention? it isn't effective as a once daily treatment for herpes. being on acyclovir suppressively will mess up testing for hsv2. that said, this encounter was only oral sex so you really were never at risk for hsv2. blood testing for std's a few days post encounter was inaccurate. most of the std's you were at risk for can't be tested for via blood as well as you tested too early.
Avatar m tn Your partner may not need continuing acyclovir. As you saw in the other link, recurrent herpes is uncommon for genital HSV-1 and the risk of sexual transmisson relatively low. Further, the effectiveness of suppressive therapy on genital HSV-1 really isn't known anyway; all research has been for HSV-2, which is more susceptible to acyclovir than HSV-1 is.
Avatar f tn I was reading however that having no symptoms for hsv and having such low results it was advices to get retested although having genital warts I thought that was one manifestation of the hsv virus so I got retested for all std at planned parenthood and my test results came back as negative for hsv 2 I asked the nurse what kind of test and the number of my results and she told me that the test was igg (which was also the one from Mexico) and that the number was .
Avatar m tn ll find a cure for herpes for a good many years. The antivirals do a great job at suppressing shedding and reducing outbreaks. Most herbal remedies promising to cure herpes and the like are complete quackery while making the folks peddling the stuff rich! I still would recommend seeing your doc to rule out other potential issues.
Avatar n tn Congratulations on a level headed attitude toward genital herpes. Consider visiting the MedHelp herpes community forum for more detailed discussion with excellent advice by the excellent forum moderators, who are experience herpes clinicians and counselors.
Avatar n tn I am dating a woman that has a history of genital herpes that has had no outbreaks or symptoms for 10 years. Prior to that, she had an initial outbreak with 2 or 3 further episodes. She does not take any medication for prevention either. Based on this, what would be the recommendations for sexual activity for both? How likely is it for the male to become infected?
Avatar f tn most people do not have dietary triggers for genital herpes. you don't have to avoid chocolate or any food groups because of herpes. any website that tells you differently, is not up to date at all on herpes :( I recommend that you read the free herpes handbook by Terri Warren. google it and it comes right up. you will most likely never to ob free to be honest.
