Acyclovir dosage for herpes

Common Questions and Answers about Acyclovir dosage for herpes

Avatar n tn Acyclovir is always 2x/day for suppressive therapy. You can not take acyclovir just 800mg 1x/day. It's not effective that way. Call your provider up and question that dose. If they say that that dose works too -ask them to please cite the research that backs that. I guarantee you they can't provide any that shows that 800mg once a day is effective for acyclovir!! do you have hsv1 or hsv2 genitally? How about orally - which one?
Avatar m tn ve only had oral outbreaks so far, i asked the doctor for acyclovir and he gave me a prescription for 800mg tablets and to take them 2x daily for a total dose of 1600mg everyday as supressive therapy. i'm concerned this is too high a dose? i thought it should be 400mg and take 2x daily for a total dose of 800mg? it was an ER doctor that gave it to me because i don't have health insurance and went to the county hospital.
Avatar m tn My doctor has perscribed 200mg taken 3 times per day - and has indicated that this is a strong enough dosage for me. My question still remains, is a dosage of 200mg taken 2 times per day effective? I have a strong adversion to taking meds of any kind. I get dizzy, light headed, tired, cranky and can taste metal in my mouth.
Avatar m tn you can price the difference at your local pharmacy. the dose for suppressive therapy with acyclovir is 400mg twice a day every single day.
Avatar n tn I was originally prescribed 400 mg of acyclovir twice daily for suppression of my herpes type 2. Recently, I asked my doctor to increase my dosage to 800 mg of acyclovir twice daily. Is there any negatives associated with taking a higher dose than what is normally prescribed for suppression. Also, are there any benefits to taking a higher dose regularly for suppression like less shedding?
Avatar f tn My acyclovir says to take 400mg a day for suppressive and 400mg 2xday for 7days for ob. But she let's me change my script to suit me. Should I up the dosage to 2400mg for 2days for ob & 800 a day for suppressive?????
Avatar n tn I had a severe herpes outbreak (8 blisters everywhere) beginning April 24 when my eye doctor took me off of Acyclovir after nine years. The Acyclovir was used to prevent further flares in my left eye from Herpes Iritis. Now I am suffering from pain in the muscle and tingling in my right arm. There was a blister in that area which has now healed. My internist has diagnosed me (after MRI) as having bone spur puttting pressure on c-6 or c-7 in my neck and I am facing surgery for that.
Avatar m tn My boyfriend and I are planning to go further into the relationship, and however I would like to do the most that I can to prevent him of getting the virus from me. I have stand-by pills of acyclovir with me for around 5 outbreaks that I can remember. Could you advise help to advise on how much of the dosage that I will need to take for suppressive treatment, and how long will it take to start to be effective? Thanks in advance for the help.
Avatar m tn her obgyn really needs to bone up on her herpes and pregnancy info as well as how herpes antivirals work. once daily acyclovir is never effective for herpes suppression :( she really needs to be on the 3x/day dose if she is going to bother to take it. not worth taking anything less than that. Odds are in the future that the doses are going to be even more frequent than that and higher doses based on some recent research on herpes and pregnancy but for now that is the recommended dose.
Avatar m tn Hi, I have been taking acyclovir 400mg tablets 2x daily for 2 years now and along with several lifestyle changes (which includes almost no alcohol and good sleeping pattern) I have had pretty much success in suppressing my yearly OBs from 6-8 outbreaks a year to none noticeable outbreaks at all.
Avatar f tn I have been taking different doses of Acyclovir over the past 2 months to get control of the virus and it gets better but does not go away completely. Should I switch meds? Would it be harmful to just increase the dosage of Acyclovir for a longer period as it's recommended for just 10 days.
Avatar n tn I didn't ask about acyclovir.
Avatar m tn The problem subsided and he has now prescribed a prophylactic dosage of Acyclovir 400mg 1 time daily for the next 6 months. At random, the red spots on the glans and prepuce keep reappearing for a day or so. The urologist claims that as long as there is no pain or itchiness, there is nothing to worry. My points of confusion are: 1. Is this really Herpes? I haven't had sex since Jul-06 (it's true!) - no intercourse, no oral, no skin-contact, no nothing.
Avatar f tn Herpes can produce lesions on the abdomen, yes. This is a bit of an odd post, not sure who is writing for whom? Does this person know they have genital herpes? I'm a bit confused.
Avatar m tn Hi all. I have had herpes 2 in my genitals for two years now and my girlfriend recently went to the gynecologist and asked about risks associated with having sex with me, etc. She mentioned that I experience between 8 and 10 outbreaks per year and her gynecologist suggested that I may have another underlying condition, infection perhaps that results in so many outbreaks. Last month a started taking 800mg of acyclovir daily to see if that would reduce my outbreaks and shedding.
Avatar f tn I am 23 and I was diagnosed with HSV-1 in mid-December. My diagnosis was by culture. (It was also clear-cut because I've had only one partner--10 days before my outbreak he had a cold sore on his lip and performed oral sex on me). SInce then, I've had a raised line or paper cut lesion appear on the inside of the left labia about every 1-2 weeks.
Avatar n tn sorry to keep this thread going but that brings up a different question as I've heard some discrepancies is the dosage for episodic treatment. My initial one I was prescribed 2 200mg pills 3x for 10 days. I've read for subsequent episodes to take the same dosage for 5 days. The dosage you explained sounds a lot easier, but do u have any explanation on these discrepancies?
Avatar m tn That same day I tripled my dosage of Acyclovir as I had read that for an episodic occurance it can be taken 3 times a day for two days for an outbreak. Would this new outbreak be caused by me not taken the dosage first prescribed by my Dr or is it possible to still have an outbreak while on a daily supresser?
1886133 tn?1320874792 Does anyone know the dosage of powdered acyclovir for a 7lb cat? My little one, "Leroy Jethro Gibbs" is having a pretty tough time of it and I want to help him get better soon!
Avatar m tn you can stop the acyclovir - this isn't herpes going on. you wouldn't have herpes symptoms for 8 months and have them present and continue to get worse like this.
Avatar m tn I am advised now to increase acyclovir dosage to 3 times a day and have levamisole hydrochloride 75 gms twice a week for another 3 months and check for HSV1 igg again. Please let me know am I on the right path to control herpes, what is the increasing trend in hsv 1 igg signify. My sugar, liver and kidney have normal results now.
Avatar m tn I started having very mild genital herpes outbreaks about eight months ago, and for this outbreak (only one small blister) I decided to take acyclovir tablets and acyclovir cream. I have no pain or itching. I have taken it for a day and a half, 200 mg every 4 hours, omitting the nighttime dose. My blister is pretty much gone, and Im wondering, would it be okay to stop taking the acyclovir? I read everywhere that Im supposed to take it for 5 days, but is it for the same reason as antibiotics?
Avatar f tn My story behind being diagnosed is so long drawn out and very exhausting to tell that I dont even plan to take it back that far so I will just get to the point. I was visually diagnosed in 2008 with genital herpes (of course the nurse took a swab of the leison) and put me on 200mg of Acyclovir 5x's a day for 2 weeks. After that initial outbreak, I hadn't had an outbreak for 3 mos and then POW another one.
