Can genital or simplex herpes cause Postherpetic Neuralgia? I had a severe herpes outbreak (8 blisters everywhere) beginning April 24 when my eye doctor took me off of Acyclovir after nine years. The Acyclovir was used to prevent further flares in my left eye from Herpes Iritis. Now I am suffering from pain in the muscle and tingling in my right arm. There was a blister in that area which has now healed.
Acyclovir is always 2x/day for suppressive therapy. You can not take acyclovir just 800mg 1x/day. It's not effective that way. Call your provider up and question that dose. If they say that that dose works too -ask them to please cite the research that backs that. I guarantee you they can't provide any that shows that 800mg once a day is effective for acyclovir!!
do you have hsv1 or hsv2 genitally? How about orally - which one?
ve only had oral outbreaks so far, i asked the doctor for acyclovir and he gave me a prescription for 800mg tablets and to take them 2x daily for a total dose of 1600mg everyday as supressive therapy. i'm concerned this is too high a dose? i thought it should be 400mg and take 2x daily for a total dose of 800mg? it was an ER doctor that gave it to me because i don't have health insurance and went to the county hospital.
one day i went to go check the pills she gave me because i was on birth control and wanted to know if it would affect it so i looked up the name acyclovir to find out it was for the herpes simplex virus....i freaked out and called and asked them why they gave me a pill for herpes if i didn't have that and the nurse on the phone told me that its for more than one thing and that its best not to google things cause it give me false indications.....
However my doctor a urologist suggested that it could be herpes and started me on acyclovir 400 for 3 times a day. I read on few posts here that the combination tests are not reliable. Hence I tested for herpes type specific 1 and 2 tests for antibodies Serum by EIA.
The results were HSV 1 serum by EIA
IGG value of 0.08 and IGM value of 0.06
HSV 2 serum by EIA
IGG value of 0.6 and IGM value of 0.1
I have a few questions
1) do the EIA test results come back the next day.

Two weeks later my blood test results came back negative for simplex 1, and a positive result of 1.49 for simplex 2. I saw the nurse at PP again and she put me on acyclovir for repressive therapy.
In the next few days I developed a large pimple like bump just at the bottom of the shaft of penis. I decided to go to a doctor to get it examined and a swab taken for a culture.
SO we did a culture on it, and we took a blood test. The culture came back positive for herpes simplex-1 and so did the the blood test.....no herpes simplex-2 was present. I had gotten another cold sore this time on my lip, of course i got all nervous and worried again. So i went went back and we did another blood test. This time the test came back positive for simplex-2 and nothing showed up for simplex-1.....my doctor said he was kind of confused...I am totally freaking out now....
Her and I were together 7 years by this time. I tested positive for Herpes Simplex I (mouth) but was negative for Herpes Simplex II (genital). I was told by the lab that Herpes Simplex I is very common (50-80% of population) and that most people don't know they have it( like me) because they never have symptoms. I cannot comment specifically to your case since recurrent herpes simplex virus (HSV) in the eye is very complicatied as the HSV virus can just attack the surface of the cornea, get into the cornea deeper laywer in in the eye's interior. There are two approved eye drops for HSV, you might ask your ophthalmologist about that. Ideally you are under the care of an Eye MD ophthalmologist that is fellowship trained and specializes in cornea diseases.
creams dont really work on herpes lesion, since they are infecting the skin from the inside out.
Why were you given acyclovir to take? You really haven't provided any testing details except for your blood test. Did they do a swab of your rash?
My doctor has perscribed 200mg taken 3 times per day - and has indicated that this is a strong enough dosage for me. My question still remains, is a dosage of 200mg taken 2 times per day effective?
I have a strong adversion to taking meds of any kind. I get dizzy, light headed, tired, cranky and can taste metal in my mouth.
So I'm pretty sure that I have herpes simplex 2 I have all the symptoms just not really interested in getting tested still living in denial I'm taking acyclovir 400 mg twice daily and the sores will go away but the skin is still weird looking and doesn't seem like it's gonna go back to normal anything you can suggest to help ?
Herpes Simplex - it could be this as well. Is it bumpy and splotchy like hives or are the blisters small and clear, itchy until you touch them and then they burn like acid? If the second is the case, have your doctor check them out, you might have herpes simplex. Don't freak out - it isn't an STD. It took awhile for my doctor to identify it. I keep a full bottle of Acyclovir and pop some when the blisters start to appear.
it is less common than other forms of herpes simplex infections but not unheard of for toddlers to transmit their own oral herpes infections to their fingers due to thumb sucking and hands in mouth. hopefully recurrences will be few and far between but keep acyclovir handy to start at the first sign of a recurrence!
you also can pick up domeboro's tablets at the pharmacy ( sometimes you have to ask for them - hard to find on the shelves ).
