Acyclovir resistant herpes

Common Questions and Answers about Acyclovir resistant herpes

zovirax

Avatar f tn It is not usual to be resistant to acyclovir, it doesn't attack the virus directly, but removes the building blocks of the virus. It may be that you have another immune issue. People with thyroid issues for example can experience ongoing outbreaks. Is your diet healthy? Are stress levels up? I'm not a fan of supplements as I don't believe they substitute or add to the positive properties of a good diet.
Avatar f tn First, it is rare for herpes to change its recurrence pattern. An increase in frequency of symptoms usually isn't herpes. Second, herpes never recurs as frequently as you seem to be experiencing. Third, it is very rare for herpes to become resistant to treatments like acyclovir; failure to improve is evidence against herpes as the cause. This isn't definite. Herpes can become resistant to acyclovir.
Avatar m tn Just wondering if genital herpes (HSV 2) can become resistant to valtrex over time. Been on it daily nearly two years and just had only my second outbreak. Not a bad one, but one none-the-less. Some things I've read indicate that this is possible. I'm certainly hoping that's not the case. Thanks.
Avatar n tn I contracted oral herpes a few years ago from my present wife. For most of that period the outbreaks were infrequent and mild (a single small lesion that would heal in few days without cratering). A few months I ago I also began having symptoms of genital herpes, though the presentation has not been of the "classic" variety, and the diagnosis has yet to be confirmed (I have only had one lesion on my genitals, and that on my scrotum.
Avatar f tn The Shingles did respond to the acyclovir very well, it just seemed a little resistant at first. The OBGYN said Shingles takes longer to heal than herpes anyway. The family doctor I saw didn't know what I had and took a biopsy, then told me to wait a week for the results. I couldn't wait a whole week - was in alot of pain! So I went to an OBGYN and he took a swab and prescribed acyclovir right away. The swab came back neg. The biopsy came back positive for "a virus.
632033 tn?1222423034 suppressive therapy with acyclovir is 400mg 2x/day. the rates of acyclovir resistance are still the same as they were when the medication was first discovered for use with herpes over 25 years ago. No worries about resistance.
Avatar f tn My question is that before and after I started to taking acyclovir(herpes) and levofwxuir(gonarrhea) I developed a white paste discharge from my vagina. Is this the cause of gonarrhea, herpes or the meds that I was taking? Also will this go away for good....I'm talking about the the white paste discharge and gonarrhea? I know the herpes is not curable but is there something that I can take to prevent the outbreak for coming back besides acyclovir....something over the counter?
Avatar m tn No, having an outbreak on antivirals isn't all that unusual. It does stop them entirely for some people, and in others, it just reduces them. It's still possible to get outbreaks while on them. I wouldn't worry about resistance, or the medication not working any longer. Maybe you have a trigger that you don't know about? Is it cold where you are, or maybe you're eating something that's triggering it? Have you been sick - the flu or a cold? Really stressed or fatigued?
Avatar f tn Hey thanks ahead of time, for answering my question, I have had type 1 genital herpes (cultures taken from sores) for 7 weeks. I have been to the Dr 2x so far and think I need to go again. I do believe I got this infection from oral sex, but not 100% sure. When I went to the doctor the first time, my symptoms had been present for 6 days. She put me on 5 days of acyclovir, which cleared up the initial sores.
Avatar m tn I am wondering if what I am describing as a chance of herpes? If I am on dailly acyclovir does that help me with resistant of HSV2 infection? Keep in mind I do have a high anxiety of herpes and HIV. What would be the next step since my sore is almost healed? If it is herpes what are the chances I received this from the friend 5 weeks ago or the girl im dating last week. Thank you Thank you for your time.
55646 tn?1263660809 After years of nothing new in herpes research, everything is new right now. Nationally, there are at least three different studies beginning for the treatment of genital herpes. First, the Genocea phase one (first in humans) trial. Instead of an oral medication to treat herpes, Genocea out of Boston has taken the approach of stimulating the immune system to respond more robustly to the herpes virus in people who are already infected with the virus.
Avatar f tn ) you can take acyclovir for a lifetime. there are no long term side effects to herpes antivirals. follow up and make sure you don't have a bacterial vaginal infection and go from there. there's no such thing as your body adjusting to herpes. We have plenty of info now that shows that ob's don't dramatically decrease even after 5 years of being infected. shedding stays the same for over 20 years of being infected.
Avatar n tn I did have a regular partner which we were not in a relationship. I found alot out about him after I got symptoms and he apologized after the last time we had sex but didnt say what for. So I know I have it. I just don't understand how the tests can be so up and down. I have taken two rounds of acyclovir and the drs even tried to see if I was acyclovir resistant but I'm not and its been two months and I still can't get some of the sores to heal.
Avatar f tn I am 23 and I was diagnosed with HSV-1 in mid-December. My diagnosis was by culture. (It was also clear-cut because I've had only one partner--10 days before my outbreak he had a cold sore on his lip and performed oral sex on me). SInce then, I've had a raised line or paper cut lesion appear on the inside of the left labia about every 1-2 weeks.
Avatar n tn However, in the absence of human data, there are potential downsides, such as fostering infection with acyclovir-resistant herpes -- which you certainly would not want! In the absense of better studies, antiviral drugs to prevent herpes transmission should be taken only by the infected person, not the susceptible one.
Avatar m tn 2 wks back,I had oral sex with my gay friend ...from 5days onwards I developed plaque over my dorsum of penis which is not causing any symptoms(itching or pain)..dermatologist has prescribed me acyclovir & thinking of herpes..what it might be? If herpes when should I go for igM & IgG. Antibodies??
Avatar m tn If you really want to know, best to get it cultured. Acyclovir will help clear it up. Herpes zoster or shingles only breaks out a maximum of 3 times in your life if you get it. You can get it at an early age but usually you get after 50 and more likely after 60. And, yes do not kiss anyone when you have it until the blister goes away. Over the counter meds not work very well. They will work for a short time then the virus gets resistant to them.
Avatar n tn Second, it is almost impossible for herpes to not undergo substantial improvement within 2-3 days after starting an antiherpetic drug like acyclovir, and 7 days is far too long. HSV can be resistant to these drugs, but that occurs almost entirely in people who have been taking the drugs for a long time, typically for many months. And it's usually limited to people with severe immune deficiency, like AIDS, cancer chemotherapy, etc.
Avatar f tn the vast majority of people with genital herpes, don't have food triggers. been seen every time you have symptoms to confirm that it's all herpes going on. also get tested for yeast and bacterial infections vaginally too. unfortunately time doesn't make people have significantly less recurrences either for the most part.
Avatar n tn I had a severe herpes outbreak (8 blisters everywhere) beginning April 24 when my eye doctor took me off of Acyclovir after nine years. The Acyclovir was used to prevent further flares in my left eye from Herpes Iritis. Now I am suffering from pain in the muscle and tingling in my right arm. There was a blister in that area which has now healed. My internist has diagnosed me (after MRI) as having bone spur puttting pressure on c-6 or c-7 in my neck and I am facing surgery for that.
Avatar m tn thanks grace. she was on daily acyclovir but got a herpes outbreak. her dr. put her on valtrex for two three day cycles. then the behcet's flared. so challenging.
