Why is my tongue sore and red

Common Questions and Answers about Why is my tongue sore and red

sore

Why is my tongue so sore? I have dry mouth from taking prescriptions and my tongue over a period of time has become very sore and sensitive to salt or pepper or spicy food.
I got the large plaint yogurt and ate it all within 2 days and my tongue was better, however, it is still with me. I still have a drip in the back of my throat which is driving me crazy. I called the doctor today and his nurse called me and said he never heard of such a thing, but they will get back with me. I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not, but I do have a fingernail that is white and coming off the nailbed, which I would think is a fungus.
Tongue coloring is still off but not painful. Top and tip of my tongue is tingling a little still colored. 9/28 Top and tip of my tongue is tingling a little still colored. Bottom inside lip feels a little numb and maybe a bit swollen. I had four 330 miligram pills of clindamycin (sp) which I took 9/26 and 9/27 (three and then one). My question is what if anything is this? Is the timing coincidental or have I infected myself.
It feels like I am swallowing too often, and the root to all of these problems seems to be my tongue. I don't know if any of this is psychological, or if something (an infection) has caused the nerve under my tongue to swell. There is no real pain, nor are there any red spots on my tongue. Please help me, this annoyance is getting to be unbearable (mentally) and it makes it hard for me to fall asleep. Thanks.

I had something diagnosed 9 years ago. It is called oral lichen planus. There is a white film which is on my tongue, gums and cheeks. My tongue will get swollen, painful and cracks in it at times. For years we thought it was thrush because I was treated with prednisone. Saw many doctors and then finally one ENT diagnosed and had a biopsy to confirm.
I've been doing that and it seems to not be getting any better, if anything it's getting worse. I still have red bumps on the back of my throat and my glands/lymph nodes are still a little swollen. What could this possibly be??!?! I'm concerned it's an early sign of an STD. I had unprotected sex about a month ago (2 weeks prior to getting the cold/prolonged sore throat). Thanks in advance for any help/advice.
The right side of my tongue where the scars are located. First my tongue turns a terrible white, dry color, and then I get a bright red bald patches over the entire right side of my tongue. It is absolutely disgusting. The reason why I am starting to become more concerned about it is because, aside from the way it looks, it use to be that I would get the patches every couple of months. Maybe three times a year, for a couple of days.
Hi, I have just had 2 wisdom teeth removed 4 days ago. One of them had been infected requiring 2 courses of antibiotics and I'm on my third course now after the extraction. My concern now is with my tongue, today I noticed a red circle near the tip where the "buds" look slightly inflamed and a whitish ring around it. I was given some medicated mouthwash to use. It isn't painful I'm just concerned why it would suddenly appear.
To give you a little background I am a 25 yr old guy and since about last november I have had something my dentist calls geographic tongue which is where the taste buds go away and it has a little white line around it usually on the edges of my tongue and I just thought it was strange that out of the blue all of a sudden this appeared.
hi grace, yes i have seen many drs and eventually a oral surgeon but this was 1 year after testing and he also called it geo tongue, what is geo tongue and what causes it , i have never had it before my risk but have been stressed 24/7 eversince steve
I've had an orange tongue and sore throat for a couple weeks and I thought I was the only one going through this. It is very embarassing and my kids kept asking me why my tongue was orange. I am so glad I found this site because a couple of people on this site have mentioned they had switched from Listerine mouth wash to Crest Pro-Health mouth wash, well so did I, and that is when the orange tongue and sore throat began. That seems to be at least one common thread people have.

Everytime I look in the mirror i have a new blister (top of my mouth, my gums, my entire tongue, and both lips, which are extremely swollen). It is disgusting and i advise anyone thinking aboutgetting their tongue pierced NOT TO DO IT! i was stupid and didnt listen. My mother was so angry when I got it done and printed out article after article about how bad it was for me but I still refused to listen. It's not worth it. I cant leave my house.
In fact I think I will definitely have to follow the advice below as I have recently finished a course of Trimethoprim for a UTI and my mouth is dry and my tongue a bit coated. So all in all, you could say we have helped each other. LOL. So thanks for YOUR help. Well, with you asking all these questions, I have researhced it and I have learned something about Candida that I didn't know before. So thanks for that.
The saliva glands under my tongue were also sore. A few days into the sore throat I developed a small rash on my right arm on the inside of the elbow. Approximately a dozen small pimples, light pink to red. They didn't itch, but scratching or squeezing caused them to get a dark center. One week later the sore throat is mostly gone and the rash is beginning to fade. I am terrified now, though I did not start that way.
They start and take about 10-15 days to heal and typically occur in same areas, back of tongue and tip of tongue. My tongue also feels hot and burns. My dr said she was pretty sure it was herpes virus that caused my cold sore, so i guess spread to the tongue. I did a swab and it came back normal but my dr said thats bc the sores had been there for several days and the swab would need to be done in the first 48hrs. Problem is, in the first two days theres nothing really there.

Then three days ago they started causing me a much larger amount of pain made worse by moving my tongue at all and all foods and liquids except cold water. Two days ago the tips turned from bright red to white but the pain level remained constant. Today the flaps turned almost completely white. While talking one of my front bottom teeth brushed against one and sliced the top half of it off. I didn't bite it. It just kind of came off.
About two months ago while eating a red hot mint i irratated the tip of my tongue. That irratation turned into what my dentist called a yaest infection. no visible signs what soever just a tight sore tongue. He prescribed a lozenger type medication which seemed to clear up the problem but has left me still with this metallic sometimes burning portion of my tongue at about the middle third.
Hello, I just wanted to give you an update on my condition, turns out you were right and it is geographic tongue. thank you for your help!
I took your advice and began my first therapy session yesterday with my therapist who is helping me cope with my anxieties and fears. But since I am concerned about something that came up a few days ago (6 weeks 4 days post exposure) and something I have never had before. My dentist wAsnt quite sure what it was either.

I have just noticed few small red bumps on the back of my tongue and concerned about STD. I recently got a pcr dna test for HIV and that came back negative but the test was about 3 weeks after exposure. I dont think i have HIV but if the test results were false negative is it positive develop oral thrush about 2 months after the exposure and does the bump sound like thrush? everything looks ok on the inside of the mouth. or can this be someother STD?. hep or syphilis? thanks in advance.
Though, 17 days later, I happened to look at my tongue and noticed there were three red circles/sores on the tip of my tongue...but one was more to the side of the tongue but still on the edge. They turned red and circular but went away in 4 days. Just yesterday, I noticed a red circular formation starting to appear again on the tip of my tongue and today, it has a very tiny white puss looking bump on the edge of the center of the red circle.
I have a pictured posted on my profile. My problem is I have had a white coating on my tongue for a while like 4-5 months with no signs of it going away. So far, I have had an oral swab tested for yeast infection and it was negative. The inside of my cheeks seem to have a white coating and the back of my throat looks awful as well. My tonsils look like they shrank and stuck to the sides of my throat. I would appreciate any insight on what this may be.
I used to always scrape my tongue when brushing my teeth but I can't do that anymore because it irritates the tiny little red bumps on my tongue. Sometimes my tongue is so sore, it hurts to drink water! Thank you for writing back :) I'm going to ask my new doctor about a prescription for diflucan.
