Common Questions and Answers about Throat and voice problems

throat

Avatar n tn Is it possible for a hiatial hernia to cause problems with my throat and voice. My symptoms are loss of voice when I talk for a little while---I can no longer sing---I can't get any range at all----my voice has grown so low that when I answer the phone people think its my husband answering. If you have any ideas I'd certainly appreciate it. Thank you very much.
Avatar f tn I had a bad cold and then got laryngitis. That lasted 3 weeks and then the 4th week my voice came back but still hoarse. I have pain on my left side of my neck and tenderness on that side when I swallow. Dr checked me out and said throat is not red and gave me pills for acid reflux. It's been 4 days and don't think its acid reflux....voice and neck still the same. Anyone know what it could be ??
Avatar m tn Hi, I'm 20 years old and a physically healthy male. Four years ago I decided I wanted a raspy voice because it sounded cool. In order to permanently cement it, I began screaming into pillows, .etc and even smoked a bit for that purpose. But after 8 months or so of doing this my voice changed. Yes, it was unwise. I don't scream or smoke anymore but my voice seems to have never recovered from those days.
Avatar f tn I think it has something to do with the jaw, the muscles in the throat and the nerves in the throat which are being vibrated by the vocal chords. I saw an ENT last fall. He said my vocal chords were just fine. He saw something else a little red but could not see any reason why I couldn't talk. I was a little hoarse at that time but had a lot of pain in my throat. I would like to be able to sing as I go through school (getting my Masters in Music Education).
Avatar f tn The muscles in your back and your neck and even toward the front of your throat can become tense and affect your voice. You may not even feel the tension initially but as time goes on and you strain to talkMore, then the tension in your muscles gets worse and it’s a vicious cycle.
Avatar f tn T GO AWAY, I TRED COUGH SYRUPS, GARGLED WITH WARM SALT WATER, SUCKED ON HALLS AND HARD CANDY, STILL NO HELP, ALWAYS HAD TO CLEAR MY THROAT, I MEAN LIKE EVERY 3 MINUTES, LIKE SOMETHING WAS STUCK IN THE BACK OF MY THROAT, I DID THIS TO THE POINT MY THROAT FELT RAW AND SORE, MY VOICE WAS ALMOST GONE AND I KNOW I WAS DAMAGING MY VOCAL CORDS CLEARING MY THROAT SO MUCH, BUT COULDN'T STOP!!! Avatar m tn A few days ago, while trying to belt out some higher notes, I hurt my voice. My voice is hoarse, and in the hollow of my throat, right between my collar bones, there is a burning sensation. My voice cracks occasionally, and I noticed a loss of one octave spanning across the past five months, and it gets tired really easily. I have put myself on vocal rest, and have been keeping the talking to a minimum. I also noticed that when I sing, my larynx goes up really high. What could this be?
Avatar m tn s never really been an issue. Recently I develoloped serious problems with my voice and throat and I went to a specialist where I had a gastroscopy done as he felt it that my reflux could possibly be causing the problem. I was put on Protium 40 initially but my GP put me on Protium 20 after about three months(mistake on her part possibly) which has controlled it but I still get reflux from time to time. I have been on protium for 6 months approx but my vocal issues still exist.
Avatar m tn For some reason it almost seems like honey/lemon and tea almost makes my throat worse. It creates more mucus and causes more voice problems it seems.
Avatar f tn s always liquids), cracking voice, throat irritation, post nasal drip, throat clearing, difficulty swallowing, sensation of something in throat and worse asthma. I take allergy medications (antihistamines and steroid nasal spray) and haven't had problems with post nasal drip for a while...I was wondering why that's been happening lately. Thanks for the list...I'll take a trip to my doctor.
Avatar f tn m in my 10th week of treatment I have developed an awful cough but also my voice is very raspy and my throat hurts from time to time sometimes severely my doc says there is no infection but it feels like it , I gave up smoking cause I was finding it difficult to breath anyone else had this ?
Avatar f tn I have problems with my voice and have for about 30 yrs.I got hit in the throat causing a bone that controls one side of my voice box. I don't know about that type of surgery, but if you were put to sleep they insert a tube down your airway and inflat a balloon to hold it in place. If it is not properly deflated before removing, it can also break those bones. That would give you air instead of sound.
Avatar m tn This can be caused by bacterial or viral infections, mucus coating due to post nasal drip, irritation of the throat and voice box by irritants. Irritants can be anything from dust, smoke, etc. Damage can also be caused if you suffer from acid reflux. You may have damage to the vocal chords by over use, or by straining the vocal chords. If you do sing, then do make sure you do vocal warm ups. The voice box needs to be looked after like any other part of your body.

Avatar m tn Now this problem with my throat and losing my voice. Is it really caused by anxiety or is it something else. Any help would be appreciated.
Avatar f tn Hi I have voice problems. My voice will sound shaky, slurred, drop syllables and so on. I find it very frustrating. It first happened around 1984 (I believe this was my first flare). It has never improved although some days are better than others. I have seen a speech pathologist and had a fluoroscope done. Results...the muscles in my throat are weak. They close over my larynx but are not strong enough to remain there. So they vibrate or open at times.
Avatar n tn Mine has a lot of scar tissue from the surgeries, it is actually constricting my throat and have problems swallowing. I have had it stertched out before but this last time it did not help. The doctors say it can take a year for my voice to come back. I'm not holding my breath on that, because of all the surgeries to my throat. If you come up with any answers let me know.
Avatar f tn It is unfortunately a little harder to sleep and more concerning is I seen to have developed a mild sore throat and am constantly clearing my throat all day. I hate to have to stop something that is allowing my brain to function better but this is really annoying. It’s been a few weeks and I’m not 100% sure it’s the meds though an internet search does list it as a side effect. So I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this as well and how you dealt with it?
Avatar n tn I had my thyroid removed a week ago today, and I have had zero problems with my voice. I had a bad sore throat for a bit from the breathing tube during surgery, but that was really it. I do local community theatre and was worried about my voice, as well, and the doctor (general surgeon for me) he couldn't guarantee anything, of course. I'm not sure how rare of an effect it is, though. It really can be the luck of the draw, I think.
