Avatar m tn I can't figure out what that effect is but since St. John's wort is not regulated its hard to know what you are getting in terms of purity and strength. Are you seeing a psychiatrist? Because even if you take St. John's wort which has been shown to have an anti-depressent effect in European studies it should be given under a psychiatrist's care. And if its having this effect better to stop it and have a psychiatrist transfer you to a prescription anti-depressent. And since St.
Avatar f tn I never tried it but the results are scientifically valid. It is not fully understood how it is acting but it is very likely that it is affecting you serotonin reuptake (along with more complex phytochemical reactions) just like another SSRI like Prozac. I mean, we didn't invent chemistry and nature do have a lot to teach us and it taught us. ''An analysis of twenty-nine clinical trials with more than five thousand patients was conducted by Cochrane Collaboration.
1243620 tn?1274790697 I took St John's Wort and 5-HTP, but they did not help me at all. Perhaps the dose I was taking was too low. Then I read bad things about 5-HTP. St John's Wort seems to help mild depression, but I have major depression. I had to go back on anti-depressants. Unfortun ately they do take quite a while to take effect. Up to six weeks in my case. I am now very well, and will never stop my medication again.
Avatar f tn I was thinking about trying st. John's wort for depression. I take tramadol for a knee alignment issue. I currently take 100mg-200mg about 3 times a week. I know there is an interaction with st. John's wort due to the seratonin increase they both cause. Am I able to take the st. John's wort on days I don't need the tramadol? If not, how long should I wait to take the St. John's wort after taking the tramadol and when would I be able to take the st.
Avatar f tn Are you on medication? There's no problem with St. John's Wort and evening primrose, but there might be a problem with medication and St. John's Wort. Evening primrose should be taken with meals that contain some fat, as it is mostly fats. And yes, you can also take Omega 3 oils. Evening primrose primarily contains omega 6 oils. As for dosing herbs, which would include St.
Avatar f tn Subsitute for prozac would be St. John's wort, it is regulated and used as a first line treatment in Germany and other places in the world. One of the more studied herbal medicines. HOWEVER. It raises seretonin which makes it a bad choice for people with bipolar. As does most herbals and things like HTP. Unfortunately there isn't really a subsitute for abilify which is what is keeping the SSRI from causing mania. And herbals have side effects.
Avatar n tn I was off my birth control and not sexually active for about two months after being on it for about five years straight. I had just got back on it for a month and became sexually active during the second week of being on it I also, on a whim picked up some St. John's Wort and took it for only a day before learning that it can make birth control ineffective. So my question is: Is there a chance that I could be pregnant?
4380186 tn?1355930258 From what I know, St Johns Wort can help some people with mild depression. I think it's best to talk about this with your Dr if you're wanting to get off of your meds. You may need to taper and your Dr can help with the tapering schedule.
954811 tn?1246452958 I've read many studies on St. John's Wort - and the consensus is that it is basically as effective as Prozac for mild to moderate depression. It won't do much for severe depression. I spoke to my psychiatrist about this, and she agreed. However, she advised against taking it because it would "limit what she could prescribe" (it can have interactions with other psychotropic medications). St.
Avatar n tn I think you have to be careful before implying that St Johns Wort is no more effective than vitamins. You may be correct in this case, because it is only recommended for mild to moderate depression, so anyone with moderate to severe depression will indeed need a pharaceutical antidepressant. However, if you look at the scientific research, St John's Wort is well established in evidence-based medicine for mild to moderate depression.
Avatar m tn I've taken St. John's Wort for depression. It worked very well for that, but I had to stop taking it because it was blurring my vision. Turns out SJW has a chemical in it that is photo-reactive that accumulates in the eyes. When we are in a brightly-lit place, the chemical reacts and causes at least mild damage to the eyes. In my case, it was just too much of a risk, so I stopped taking it, and will never take it again. I have since switched to 5htp.
Avatar n tn Hi, I have been in depression for a few years and still haven't had enough courage to talk to my doctor and family, and it has gotten worse...So I bought St. John's Wort pills that don't require prescription from the doctor, and after a few days taking them just as it was written, one in the morning and one during lunch, i really started feeling better, aldo it said you usually have to wait a week or two...
6861995 tn?1385501475 Buspirone is a very strange medication -- it hasn't done particularly well in studies and it's been around a long time, but some people find it effective. St. John's Wort is used for depression and nobody really knows why it works when it works -- theories have differed as to which neurotransmitters are affected. Generally it is not advised to take St. John's Wort with serotonin targeting drugs, as it might affect serotonin, and buspirone does have an effect on serotonin.
Avatar f tn I'm new to posting, but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts about this. I've been taking St. John's Wort for almost 3 years and it does help some. It really helps me sleep and keeps me from getting as moody. I am a 42 year old female, so I think it helps smooth out the hormone symptoms, too. But, I do have ocd, since my early teens. In a way, I think it's not that severe, but it could be that I'm just used to it.
Avatar n tn I took the St. John's wort one day two doses and forgot the next, and that next morning woke up dizzy. Haven't taken it since, and flew back and forth to Texas, and haven't felt totally straight since then. Although, I have taken Xanax in between and drank some. I just haven't ever been dizzy before. My Mother has and says its hireditary, and her brother also, I'm 33, and she said that's about when she started noticing veritigo type symptoms on and off.
Avatar f tn Has anyone taken St John's wort to treat depression? Does it work? I'm considering taking it, but I'm not sure of how effective it is... I'd appreciate any comments. Thanks.
782550 tn?1333484257 Don't know anything about Malarone, but try asking your pharmacist. Keep in mind that St. John's Wort is primarily for depression; there are better things out there specifically for anxiety, unless you've already found this herb to do the trick for you. If it does, it would indicate your primary problem is depression, not anxiety, as depression can cause anxiety. You might also look St.
Avatar f tn Oh and: "Preliminary research suggests that SAMe is more effective than placebo in treating mild to moderate depression and is just as effective as anti-depressant medications without the side affects frequently associated with the medications (headaches, sleeplessness and sexual dysfunction). Plus, antidepressants tend to take six to eight weeks to begin working, while SAMe seems to begin much more quickly than that.
1102283 tn?1257817472 We dont really know how St Johns Wort works, but it seems clear that it works very well. When you buy St. Johns Wort supplements, you should look for a label that says it contains at least 0.3 percent of Hypericin and Pseudohypericin. The usual dosage is 300 mg to 1800 mg per day of the 0.3 per cent extract. Side effects are mainly minor gastrointestinal complaints and mild allergic reactions like itching.
Avatar m tn If you're not on a medication and anxiety is your main problem, 5htp, not St. John's Wort, would be your first choice. You'd want to combine it with magnesium citrate, a relaxant combo such as passionflower and hops or valerian, adaptogens such as eleuthero and ashwagandha to help the adrenals, holy basil to regulate cortisol. You see how I mean it's complicated?
Avatar f tn I am not sure there is medication specifically for depression that can be bought over the counter. I have tried St John's Wort and 5HTP, and think they are the only ones apart from supplements that are supposed to help. Also tried Kalm, and Quiet Days. None of them effective for me really.
Avatar m tn Hello, St John's Wort is known for supplements. If what you took was a herbal supplement then has NO AFFECTION to HIV tests.
