1243620 tn?1274790697 Does anyone take propranolol for anxiety and panic attacks? I've had crippling anxiety for my whole life. Antidepressants increase it to the point where I'm in such a state I almost pass out from hypervenitlating. I've heard propranolol is good for this, and is effective.
612551 tn?1450022175 sudden rise in pulse when doing activities. I was on 10mg Propranolol for a couple years as needed for anxiety and rapid pulse symptoms. It helped anxiety but didn't do much even if I doubled the dose to stop the fast pulse. Recently I saw a cardiologist he again said my heart is normal and that basically it's just a symptomatic thing. I'm 32, slim, in good shape, so he started me on 25mg Metroprolol twice a day. I'm noticing a huge positive difference.
Avatar n tn I have been on Methimazole 10mg 3x a day for four weeks and was on propranolol for the first two weeks. I am off the propranolol. After three wks I am now taking methimazole 2x a day. Since the on set of this illness I have had achy/painful gums which seem to get more severe with each episode. I have seen my Dr., dentist and a periodontist. Tylenol helps. No one can find a cause for this pain.
29837 tn?1414534648 I have been on Atenolol for many years . Not for my Liver or Varcies. I take it for heart arrithmia. I am up to 200mg a day. I did have to go off of it to get a dobutomine stress echo. That was very uncomfortable for a few day feeling my heart beat irradically. The test was shear torchure I will never have it done again. The reason they do the endoscopy or pill cam is to find out if you have varcies or any type of problems due to acid reflux or stomach ulcers.
Avatar m tn I take Atenolol and cannot take a full dose all at once. I take it 1/4's of a 25 mg. tablet and keep a check on my bp and heart rate. If it gets too low, I delay the dose. I used to take Toprol XL and I broke that in half on the advice of a nurse, even tho it was extended release. That was better. If I took a whole tablet, my bp would drop like a stone. I worked this out with my primary care doctor and my cardiologist was fine with it.
Avatar n tn If it ends in "olol", it is a BB. There is metoprolol, propranolol, atenolol, labetalol... There are many. That is, of course, just the generic name.
Avatar n tn The med was a lifesaver for me and did manage to lower my heart rate to a range where I could feel confident. I also received treatmente for anxiety, clonazepam and an SSRI. Now in my country Bristol has discontinued the Corgard and there is no generic nadolol here so I've been switched to bisoprolol. This drug does not seem to be working, in fact my resting heart rate is going up to 90-100 in the evening and then I'm afraid of having an attack.
Avatar m tn Is there memory loss due to usage of this drug? I have had a prescription for atenolol for the past ten years to control blood pressure. And, I am experiencing some minor memory loss. I will not give my age because that may give you a reason for attributing memory loss to some other reason. I have researched another similar drug called propanolol which was used in an experiment to control the emotional effects of painful memories. What is the data on the long term usage of atenolol?
Avatar m tn I saw my Cardiogist 2 weeks ago, he look at my last holter monitor results and said it was anxiety and said that I may have dysautonomia but probably cause of the anxiety... I was stable on 10 mg x 3 of propranolol day for the last 7 months but the tachycardia was not under control at all... He suggest to RX 25 mg x 2 day of metoprolol. I start taking the metoprolol 2 weeks ago. I feel awful! Not only its not helping the tachycardia, but it make my anxiety worse.
Avatar m tn I was able to take a LOT of propranolol without affecting my bp too much. Coreg makes for a little more hypotension. Metoprolol, not too bad. Labetalol, one pill and I'm dizzy... but it does cut my rate down. To get into the meds that affect rhythm without disturbing bp too much, you get into the antiarrhythymics and the drugs get scarier for your rhythms. So...
Avatar n tn Hi 2 years ago I randomly started suffering from pac's and occassional pvc's. I was checked out at the time and my heart was found to be structurally normal. However I was unable to cope with the number of these, and have been taking a small dose of atenolol daily since (12.5mg, one tablet cut in half). I'm now 6 weeks pregnant, and tried to stop taking them but couldn't. When I did, I was horribly anxious and couldn't cope.
Avatar n tn Well, its most common use is for anxiety - which is fairly common for people with ADHD. You can read more about it here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propranolol What I don't understand is why your doctor didn't explain this to you. Especially if you are prone to anxiety, the not knowing only makes it worse.
Avatar m tn I tried to exercise this pressure down, healthy eating, no salt, but problem is that sometimes my pressure would spike to levels like 160/110 pulse 150 for a short time of less than 5 minutes and then leave me feeling weak for a few days. Before starting Medication I did ESG, ECHO, cholesterol test, x-ray and blood test. Everything was registering normal. So I was put on amlodipine 10mg and Propranolol 40mg on 1st July 2016. This helped lower my blood pressure to around 115/68.
Avatar n tn Hi- thanks for your thorough response. I know most cases of akathisia remit after the medication is stopped, but i have found in research some cases of akathisia can last over 2 years- which is horrible. I am seeing a movement disorders specialist and she thinks it is akathisia, not TD, becuase we can't visibly see the muscle spasms that I feel- it is all internal. She said in TD one would see it on the outside.
Avatar f tn s a beta-blocker mostly used to lower blood pressure but sometimes used for performance anxiety situations like stage fright, exam taking, job interviews etc. He's used it with other patients experiencing ED. I also do take the beta-blocker pindolol which has kept my BP at 125/70 for years. Shrink says very occasional and use of propranolol on top of pindolol should not be a problem but I still have concerns which I will run by my GP.
Avatar f tn I had not done the blood work yet, I will have them on the 7th and see the doctor on the 8th, the only medication I am taking right now is Atenolol, for the paplpitation, but my doctor wants me out of it before the next appointment, I am just cutting it little by little.
Avatar m tn so i have been taking 5 mg of atenolol daily for fast heart rate and now i found out i have vitamin d defficiency.... i have always had vit d defficiency and used to treat it with taking 50000 iu weekly.... now my concern is can i take vit d in high amount with atenolol????
865431 tn?1239774493 The generic is atenolol and here's a link on side effects - my husband took it for a very short time - he became highly allergic to it but most people don't have those issues. http://blood-pressure.emedtv.com/atenolol/atenolol-side-effects.
Avatar f tn One question about beta blockers..I take 10mg of Propranolol as needed for anxiety, and it helps keep my heart rate slow if I am anxious..But I am wondering, I have seen on the internet where beta blockers can make palpitations/skipped beats worse?? Since I started taking Xanax for anxiety, that seems to help and I feel it's a bit safer on the heart than a beta blocker..But maybe I'll ask my doctor about Atenolol, is it more heart-specific than Metoprolol/Propranolol?
Avatar f tn We often use medications called beta-blockers (metoprolol, propranolol, atenolol are examples) to help in such situations.
Avatar f tn I'm presently on atenolol 40 mg (along with hydrochlorothiazide) once daily. I will be transitioning to propanolol 20 mg (and hydrochlorothiazide) twice daily soon - my doctor wants me to transition by taking propanolol - 1/2 of 20 mg twice a day for one week and then the full 20 mg twice daily. Why? Won't that cause rebound hypertension? Thanks.
Avatar f tn I tried every medication they gave me metoprolol, propranolol, atenolol, etc. until they finally hit on a new medication by Bystolic! I hit the jackpot, it was like night and day! I take 20 mg in the morning with 125 mg of magnesium taurate then 5mg of Norvasc for HTN then take 10 mg of by Bystolic at night with 125 mg of magnesium taurate in between I take .5 Xanax in the morning and at night I have not had one PVC in the last three years I feel like a different human being!
2010625 tn?1329372056 I have akathisia from Abilify but it works for me most of the time so I didn't want to go off it. My pdoc added propranolol, a beta blocker, 60mg a day, that stopped the akathisia almost completely. Propranolol is actually mainly for high blood pressure but has "side effects" that takes care of akathisia and anxiety. The only problem I have from it is orthostatic hypotension (dizziness upon standing) but all I have to do is stop and lean over for a few seconds and it passes.
1124887 tn?1313754891 t get any worse, but it somehow felt more like anxiety (as I got more physical symptoms of anxiety which the propranolol somehow stopped). It was OK. Good to know that I in fact suffered from anxiety and not some other mental illness or heart disease. Recently I stopped taking Metoprolol too. I still feel fine. The anxiety is there, but it doesn't bother me so much. So it seems like SSRI can be a great alternative for those suffering from anxiety. Just wanted to mention.
Avatar f tn Hi there. Usually, the docs will prescribe Inderal more as a daily medication for anxiety prevention. I did have a friend who was prescribed it on an "as needed" basis for presentations just as you describe. Her dose was 10 mg. That is a pretty low, standard "starting" dose. The nice thing about a beta blocker like Inderal vs a benzo, like Ativan or Xanax, is you don't get that sedated, drowsy feeling (most of the time for most people anyway).
