Avatar m tn Hello, I've been using propranolol over a year for performance anxiety. I made the mistake to stop cold turkey for about two weeks during semester break. I used to take 120mg. When school started again, during the first week I used propranolol for two days at the same dose and I realised that blushing, high blood pressure, palpitations came back. The second week I tried to increase the dose in order to overcome withdrawl. However, the outcome was even worse.

Avatar f tn Prior to being pregnant I would take 5-10mg of Propranolol a few times a month for performance anxiety. I have withheld using it so far but it has really hindered me at work. I have a big presentation I need to give this week in front of 150 people and fear getting on stage without taking it. However, I am also nervous about any potential harm to my baby. Can you clarify if it is safe to use propranolol (5mg) infrequently during the remainder of my pregnancy??? thank you very much!!

Inderal will continue to help your stage flight as before even if you were on Inderal prophylaxis for migraine, because the additional dose will give you the desirable effects. Inderal will not eliminate all the anxiety in public speaking... Inderal may sometimes create problems, e.g.
Avatar m tn I'm considering the minimum dose of propranolol as prescribed by my doc, but i'm very cautious and wanted to know what it is like and what any side effects and withdrawl might be like. what can i expect when taking this? i enjoy working out so i'm hoping it wouldn't affect my weight lifting and cardio that i like to do. thanks in advance!
Avatar m tn Anyone got any suggestions for what I try next for performance anxiety (public speaking)? Propranolol is doing funny things to my head (fuzzy, blurry thinking, verging on mini-intermittent headaches) a week or so after taking it. Strange thing is, I was using it fine for about 5-6 years, then suddenly I've developed these side effects... I could live with them, but for the fact they stay around for several weeks after just one dose and it drives me crazy...
Avatar f tn This is typically given to performers, or public speaker who have anxiety. Sometimes doctors will only prescribe the beta blocker (propranolol) or the xanax or lorazepam for just before the performance or public speaking. My guess is that you do so much of it that he feels that you would be better off with it in your system so that if you are in a sticky situation the medication will do the job and help you through.
Avatar f tn Also, at least according to what I've read, beta blockers tend to work best with social anxiety and performance anxiety.
Avatar n tn I have gone the Propranolol, xanax, and Klonopin routes and I currently have all 3 of those in my medicine cabinet. Here is my summary on their effectiveness for anxiety: Propranolol: Does nothing at all to alleviate anxiety. The only thing it does is lessen the side-effects of anxiety. It does help a bit with confidence because you "think you have an edge", and you do, but it doesn't get rid of it at all.
Avatar m tn Hello, so basically I've been using ashwagandha, rhodiola rosea(with breaks) and propanolol for performance anxiety. The problem is that when I use this regimen I have this weird and bad odor coming from my pores. However, this happens occasionally during the day and not all the time. I have come to the conclusion that there are two possible causes. 1) according to one study ashwagandha caused thyrotoxicosis to a 32-year-old woman http://www.ncbi.nlm....
Avatar f tn I am reasonably healthy and cannot see a reason for this to start happening. Is it possible that the stress and anxiety that I have been through could have manifested itself in my hands (and what feels like my arms)and make them shake? I feel like I am picking things up and moving them about as if I was extremely nervous. I also feel like I can feel the blood pumping through my upper body as my heart beats and I am constantly tired. I haven't had to stop doing anything.
3060903 tn?1398568723 Because beta blockers don’t affect the emotional symptoms of anxiety such as worry, they’re most helpful for phobias, particularly social phobia and performance anxiety. If you’re anticipating a specific anxiety-producing situation (such as giving a speech), taking a beta blocker in advance can help reduce your “nerves.” Beta blockers include drugs such as propranolol (Inderal) and atenolol (Tenormin).
Avatar m tn This isn't really a question, it's more or less a walkthrough of what I am going through with anxiety problems and alcoholism in hopes that it might help someone out there. Had I read online about how common anxiety attacks after a night of drinking are, maybe I could have started my road to recovery sooner, and maybe some of you can.
Avatar n tn Propranolol is best known for its benefit in performance anxiety. If your anxiety disorder does not include performance anxiety as a major component, you may consider weaning off Propranolol, after consulting with your psychiatrist. Sertraline is expected to take care of the anxiety as well as the depression.

Avatar m tn I suffer from severe performance anxiety. Most recently I had a test for a university subject and I felt like before and during the exam I was going to have a heart attack. I was completely prepared, I knew the material, but when it came to the exam I was just so uncontrollably anxious I literally could not write. I am concerned my tutor will not be able to read my writing and I will receive a 0 it was that bad. I have never been able to do well in interviews, public speaking, etc...
Avatar f tn I am a graduate student. I have a fear of public speaking and a stage/performance fear when I speak in front of new people or students of my class. A few of my classes require that I give powerpoint presentations in front of the class. When I am on the spot, my voice and hands become shaky - I sometimes lose concentration to the point that I cannot get words out of my mouth even though I go in front of the class very well prepared.
Avatar f tn Hello dear friends, I have social anxiety disorder only when I have to go and do some performance related activity or be scrutinized or go through an interview. I was prescribed clonazepam to use when needed. I got only 10 pills, 0.5 mg each. I took 0.25 mg just to try and see if it agrees with my body and it was fine. 12 hours later I took 0.5 mg. It seemed to make me drowsy which is fine, then I came across klonazepam warnings on the Internet. I stopped abruptly even though I took 0.
Avatar n tn The typical treatment for this is propranolol (a beta blocker) and if there is anxiety along with it, then clonazepam too. The propranolol will help with the shakes and also anxiety, but if the anxiety is more pronounced and/or with panic attacks then my guess would be that the doctor would prescribe clonazepam with it.

443862 tn?1238003039 And its not Metoprolol that helps anxiety. It's actually Propranolol that treats stage fright and performance anxiety, which is a b2, not a b1 blocker. Just some thoughts.
Avatar n tn Propranolol can cause fatigue, can affect the libido, and has some other side effects but it is generally well tolerated in younger adults. If you are very atheletic, propranolol may affect your performance as an athlete because it slows the heart rate. However, again, it is one of the established treatments for BET and it is useful in most people.
Avatar f tn was it Inderal (generic name Propranolol)? Inderal, has been shown to be very effective in the treatment of performance "anxiety" Some performers and musicians use it to reduce the autonomic nervous system arousal BUT other bb's on a regular basis can cause depression.
Avatar m tn We went to see a new neurologist (the other one had moved away), who was reluctant to put him back on the Propranolol after just one episode; also, my son runs track and cross-country, and Propranolol prevents the heart from speeding up as much as it normally would, so can interfere with running performance. Instead, he prescribed a bunch of supplements: vit. D, CoQ10, magnesium, & B-complex. He also wanted him to eat a lot of protein. He did a lot of blood work, which was all normal.
1448936 tn?1363209946 I second what Atlastfree said. I use Propranolol. I use it for more than just anxiety, but it definitely helps the physical manifestations.
Avatar n tn 41 Scott, You have been diagnosed with social phobia (social anxiety disorder) and are taking Buspar and propranolol which may be helpful medications for this disorder. Additionally you had a trial of Prozac (an antidepressant, so called SSRI) but discontinued it. Prozac (and other SSRI's) have had the most research of all the agents used in treating social phobia and so far seems to be the most efficacious. It can be taken safely in combination with Buspar.
Avatar n tn A friend of mine who happens to be a musician recommended me to take some Inderal 10 mg about 1 hour before doing what I consider to be an important presentation (speech, demonstration, etc). According to him it would improve dramatically my performance. I tried last week and it really worked. I tried seven days later for another important speech and it worked again. The only side effect I noticed was some kind of distant feeling.
Avatar n tn The medication used most often for anxiety is Propranolol. This is a non-specific beta-blocker (not targeted just for the heart muscle). I'm not too sure if this is a good route for GAD (again, it should be your MD's call). Generally, it is used for things like performance anxiety. In other words, if you are anxious because of symptoms (racing heart and S.O.B.) these might be o.k. But, if your anxiety is mental in etiology (going crazy or getting sick), the beta-blocker might not be the best.
Avatar n tn Alot of performers take beta blockers about 45 minutes to an hour be a performance if they sufferer from performance anxiety to help them with the symptoms of an excessive adrenalin rush. This is my understanding of what a catecholamine driven focus might mean, I am not an MD, confirm this with your doctor.
Avatar n tn In Social Phobia with performance anxiety, Propranolol and Atenolol helps too. From what you have described, it seems that you have more of the generalized type. Psychotherapy includes cognitive-behavioral therapy which involves desentisization, retraining and a range of home assignments. For these reasons, I advice you to seek the help of a mental health professional. Some studies indicate that the use of both medications and psychotherapy produces better results that either therapy alone.
