Common Questions and Answers about Itchy scalp losing hair

itchy

My scalp is very red, slightly smelly and itchy, however it is only down the centre part of my hair. In addition, I am losing handfuls of hair every time I wash it. I have tried oral antibiotics, topical antifungals, corticosteriods, coconut oil, Head & Shoulders shampoo for itchy scalp, Nizoral shampoo and Neutrogena Tar shampoo, however, nothing has improved my scalp. It started about five months ago and it is getting more severe.
I am on t3 and t4 (Cytomel and Lyvoxl) and losing hair. Washing my hair (normally long and thick) yesterday, a nest the size of a golf ball came out. My scalp itches terribly and I am literally tearing my hair out. Most of the itching is at the crown, more on the right side than the left, and I'm getting a bald spot there. But all of the crown area has definitely thinned. I am on bio-idential HRT program which has been working well for two years.
I have a very itchy scalp that produces dandruff. I have to wash my hair every day or the scalp becomes excessively oily and makes the itching even worse! I've also noticed that I'm losing more hair in the shower and when I brush it than usual, I'm finding it everywhere - on my clothes, on the bedding.. everywhere! Please help.
The most recent Derm prescribed a shampoo with a steroid, but that isn't helping, and he recommended I see an internist. I am really worried, because I am losing my hair, all over my scalp, and I don't know what is happening to me, internally, since I am breathing this stuff in. Do you have any idea what this could be, and do you recommend I see another Derm, or an internist? The Derms I see, don't even look at my scalp, they just try different topical & oral medications.....
My dermatologist prescribed steroids and the rash went down, but the itchy scalp and flaking and hair loss are still going on - three weeks later. I want to know if this is hormonal and stress-related (my job is requiring me to work 12-hour days and is a stressful PR position AND I work a job on the weekends because my PR job doesnt pay what I owe in student loans) - this on top of having to deal with becoming pregnant (unplanned) and then losing that pregnancy.
There are two kinds of hair loss. There is hair loss with visible scalp disease and there is hair loss without scalp disease. In your case, the hair loss may be associated with both the fungal infection and another underlying condition of seborrheic dermatitis. At this point, there is really no effective medical therapy for hair loss. If your hair loss is associated with tinea and seborrheic dermatitis then the underlying disorders need to be addressed first.
I believe stress can cause itchy dry scalp (dandruff) which results to losing more hair than usual. Usually getting a hair spa or scalp treatment helps. Or simply massaging your scalp with extra virgin olive oil works for me.
What causes a red, itchy pimple-like rash on scalp with subsequent hair loss? I have been treated with Ketokonazole shampoo, steroid liquid applied to scalp, chemical- and fragrance-free shampoo and conditioner (Free & Clear), stopped coloring my hair, etc. and so far nothing has taken this away. I am now losing my hair! Can anyone help me?
My GP has given me some shampoo for Seb Derm which has not really helped any of this – I was also under the impression that mild irritation of Seb Derm don’t cause hairloss either, just dandruff, which has gone with the use of this shampoo (and just general better hair care since this began happening). I wouldn’t have said that my eyebrows or scalp hair is very itchy at all and I don’t ever really scratch them from itches.
The weird thing is that i loose my hair and the bald spots are red. My scalp gets itchy and very itchy. I can see my scalp beginning to turn red then on that spot my hair starts to fall. My hair is very sensitive and its thin now. What can i do?
Just a month after losing one family member another went into the hospital, rapidity deteriorated and we lost them to. Now I have a lot of dandruff, itchy scalp, and massive hair loss after a shower. I had been really worried about hair loss after a shower, it seems as I lose about two combfuls a time in the front of my head after a shower and just a tad bit on the sides making me scared to shower.
Does anyone have anextreme itchy scalp and losing alot of hair. It just comes out in 2 or more strands everytime anything touches it. It doesn't have to be a hair brush. I haven't been through chemo yet.
My sister is losing her hair and freaking out! It started with a red, round, itchy, scaley dry patch right above her forehead the size of a quarter. She lost all hair in that area. She says it looks like eczema or psoriasis which her doctors have treated and done a biopsy for but all results are coming back negative. They thought it was alopecia but weren't sure. It appears to be cradle cap like infants get on her scalp.
I have a cold and suddenly feel like there is something crawling on me starting with my scalp. I've checked there is nothing there! Not taking or doing anything different. As some of you will remember I was diagnosed with PPMS in 2008. I don't have "relaspes" things just seem to appear at times. I'm not due to see neuro again until next summer... any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.
forehead is becoming horrible. Scalp very itchy, dandruff, lots of hair coming out. Can this be Demodex? If so – how long does it take for it to get out of control and can all my symptoms be reversed if treated? Could the fact that I just started taking lymecycline have had any effect on these things becoming infested?
i wash my hair 3-4X per week. but still my scalp is very oily ( especially the top of my scalp (also the worse place of hair loss, i almost cant cover it anymore) my scalp is oily, sometimes itchy aswell, and also have "scalp pain" some area of the scalp, i also find some white/yellow crust something at the root of my hair frequently ( there are a lot) i cant really see the back side.. but i have also dandruff problem.
Is it normal for someone my age to be losing their hair so soon? Also I have noticed my scalp is itchy and when I scratch it I'm actually pull out my hair and the roots connected to it. What should I do?
Even after I wash my hair, the grainy like build up is still there. It is NOT flaky what so ever. My hair has also started to fall out and at the end of my hair, a white little grain is at the end. Hair will not stop falling out. I have gotten blood tests at a dermatology office and everything was normal. I also have tried about very type of zinc pyrithione shampoo, at the highest concentrations. Also I have tried, salycylic shampoos, tar shampoos, jojoba oil, AND nothing seems to help.
Comb your hair very gently. You are at the stage that I started to really loose my hair as well. I probably lost at least 50% and maybe up to 60%. Its hard to tell. Do not use an oily shampoo as it will dry out your scalp even more. Try to find a really good one for Dry hair...I found a condition mine and also bought a spray on conditioner and a detangler then I comb my hair after the shower. They helped alot. My spray on conditioner I got at a hair place and it is in a turquoise bottle..
I'm an african american with short, dry, hair with dry flaky scalp. My scalp is flaky on the left side and front hair line above my forehead. when the scalp is scratched with a comb, it appears the flakes are actually scabs. If scratched too hard the area bleeds. In the past, I had used head and shoulders but it worked temporarily. I have used moisturizers marketed as moisurizers for african american males and have had some success when I use it and wrap my head.
I also have a regularly itchy and dry scalp with white or yellow flakes everywhere. I lose a lot of hair during combing and when washing it so have reduced to washing my hair only a couple of times a week or at the most 3 times. Also I often find 'scabs' on my scalp which itch like crazy till I pick them off (gross, I know!) and there are even some small 'bloody' bits in places. My hair strands always have something whitish-clear stuck to them like glue (oil?).
In the last week or so I have had scalp pain mostly in the top of my head there are a couple little bumps and those hurt also but a lot more of the skin area hurts. Am I getting ready to lose hair? I am using Nioxin shampoo and scalp therapy to help prevent it. also is there anything I can put on it to make it quit hurting. My hair is short so it is not the weight of the hair.
