Effexor xr and smoking

Common Questions and Answers about Effexor xr and smoking

I was put on the effexor XR and it was bad news for me. I had a horrible experience; not only did it not help my depression, it made me feel like I was living inside of a well or something and peering out. I don't know how else to describe it, but it was weird and scary. I was only on it for two weeks so the doctor said I could just stop it. I think with most anti-depressants you are supposed to wean off of them. He then put me on Zoloft which worked much better.
These things built up slowly so I did not realize it was the effexor for a long time. Extreme hostility-everyone and every thing that doesn't go my way sets me off, (I have never ever been this kind of person); gained 60 lbs. (of course you do when you're eating chocolate and sweets all day and night); sleeping 12 hours a day; exhaustion so extreme it was hard to get through the work day. I couldn't even clean the house in one day because I had no stamina.
If you take medication such as effexor XR and feel the highs from it then you definitely need to be able to tolerate the lows of getting off it. There is no free lunch in this type of business. You have to take responsibility for your decisions. and as far as running. It's very obvious that it opens up your cardio vascular system and releases endorphins naturally that make you feel better. Training for a marathon??
Hello, I was diagnosed with Lyme and a co-infection about 2 years ago and was recently put on effexor XR 150. I have been on it for about 2 months now and it has done wonders for me and my panic attacks and depression. The big problem that I have is that it has caused me to lose an enourmous amount of weight. I saw my general doc. this week and he said that my weight loss was unacceptable. You see, I am pretty skinny as it is anyway. I do not have the weight to lose.
I have been on effexor XR 225 mg daily for about 2 weeks, and been on effexor a total of about a month and a half. I just found out that I'm pregnant. I know this is a category C drug, but I'm afraid to go off of it, due to the fact that after skipping one dose, I was ready to commit suicide. My doctor is looking into the situation. Until then, can you tell me what might possibly happen to my baby?
I would like to know what I am possibly getting myself into before I start smoking, most likely I am going to try it and just want some input.
My doctor (general prac) said they are pretty much the same thing, and he switched me from effexor to cymbalta. I don't feel as crazy and out of control as I did with the effexor. I don't know how I feel about the Cymbalta yet. I AM going to see a pyschiatrist (sp?) at the end of the month, but I was just wondering if anyone has been on these. Thanks!
SO I DECIDED to GO BACK and HE ACTUALLY GAVE ME 10MG OF PROZAC to OFFSET THE WITHRAWL FROM THE effexor and IT WORKED!. HE toLD ME to TAKE onE DAY OF 37.5 effexor, and 10MG OF PROZAC. THEN FOR 3-5 DAYS TAKE JUST THE 10MG OF PROZAC. I FELT A LITTLE SICK STILL GETTING OFF THE effexor WITH THE PROZAC BUT IT WAS NOT NEARLY AS BAD. THE REASon HE GAVE THE PROZAC to OFFSET THE effexor SIDE EFFECTS IS BECAUSE PROZAC HAS A MUCH LonGER HALF LIFE THAN effexor.
i cannot count the number of posts i've read here and on other forums about ppl having horrible side effects and/or withdrawal effects of meds to include effexor. i also took effexor and had similar experiences. i now refuse to take any ADs. i've been on so many that i can't even name them all! the side effects have been terrible as well as the withdrawal effects (and most of them just don't work!) remember, you are in control of what goes into your body....not some pdoc!
My libido became non-existent, I was gained weight, my digestive system seemed out-of-wack, and I'm not sure that it helped my anxiety. I'm not sure it was related to the effexor XR, but I was bruising very easily, and I was obsessive about spending and "projects" during this time. I should also mention that I am on 30 mg of Adderall XR for ADD. My Dr. decided to switch me to Wellbutrin XR which would also help me quit smoking.
I got Serotonin Syndrome while on effexor XR and some other drugs. It started with muscle twitching. My psychologist insisted I could control it -- I could not! He also insisted that despite having being diagnosed with Serotonin Syndrome and hospitalized for it -- my limbs were flailing all over the place and muscles were clenching and twitching everywhere and I was extremely dizzy. My pych took me to the psychiatric emergency room.
Then he says to quit taking it and prescribed effexor XR and wanted me to work up to 300mg per day, which I did. I felt better but ran into a problem--my company insurance changed in Jan. 06 and the cost of this medication with my new "insurance" was in orbit. So, I say it was prescribed to help me through this difficult time and things are getting much better so I quit cold turkey. BIG MISTAKE!! I was O.
I was on effexor XR 150 mg./day for 15 years. I quit smoking two months ago, and a week ago I realized that the effexor XR, if I really wanted to be "clean", had to go too. Not that I see it as a bad thing, but I want everything out of my system.
I have been taking effexor XR 150 mg for 2-3 years and now I have been switched to lexapro 10mg . How do I go about tappering off the effexor and when do I start the lexapro????
I have gained nearly 70 pounds since beginning effexor XR and if the only solution is to go on a 975 calorie diet, then I guess I'l just stay oeverweight. As a teacher, I doubt that I could get through the day at school on that few calories, not to mention my work at home, or any hobbies or exercise!! I do take sublingual B12, and I do not drink caffiene. "They" obviously know that anybody who eats fewer than 1000 calories a day will lose weight.
About this same time I had decided to start weaning myself off of effexor for several different reasons. I was taking both Wellbutrin XL and effexor XR and was just tired of taking so many medications ( I am also on hormone replacement therapy). The side effects I had from effexor were not that totally bad; sweating and being hot when nobody else was, decreased sexual feelings, not as intense orgasms. I had quit about a year ago but don't remember feeling like this at all.
I decided to quit smoking herb last week as it was something I had been planning to do anyway and I was hoping I would lose the spaciness I have been recently feeling. Since that time I have felt VERY out of it and the panic attacks have become debilitating. Going to the dry cleaner almost made me have a meltdown. Again this coming from a very social, outgoing person who works with the public for a living! I saw the MD Monday and he feels that now that I may have a chemical imbalance.
Hi Purple477, I would also look at effexor XR as part of the weight problem as well. I was on the medication for about 5 years. I went from a size 7 to a size 13 in that time. I was not eating more just the same, exersized, and other daily habits had not changed. I do realize that it may not be the sole contributor to weight gain but for me it was. It has taken about a year now to get to a size 9 and I have done nothing different to shed the weight then I did before taking the medication.
Tried effexor XR for nearly two months, titrating up to 225. Was "almost" OK up to about half that dose. Then felt "toxic" on it. Went hypo-manic and couldn't sleep for many days on end (three and four days at a time and only able to sleep a coupld hours before the next round of insomnia) . I should add that every SSRI tried has had same effect for me - am very sensitive to any meds.
5 for 10 days then i went to 75 i was on them for like 5 mos well my depression was getting worse so he upped me to 150 they were too strong i couldnt handle them so then he tried me on 2 -75's one in am and one in pm they worked for maybe 15 days then they started feeling just like the 150's so i went back down to 75's then i got worse i was depressed and crying and then started having the fainting spells so he sent me to a psychiatrist he put me on the zoloft 25 mg for 7 days then 50 mg for 3
I would talk to you doctor and ask them what you should do and how you should wein yourself off cause youa re on XR and them you cant just break in half you actually have to get a lower dose of them meds! Good luck hope u feel better!
Hello, I have been taking effexor XR 225 mg for 8 months and my doctor and I have decided to wean me off of it. I am 5 weeks into this and am down to 150 mg. I feel like I have reached the point of pure insanity, i cant tell what is real anymore but i have to keep telling myself its only withdrawals. it is so tempting to just go back to 225 mg considering I cant keep my life on pause for much longer.
I talked to my doctor about taking effexor XR and Chantix at the same time and he said that its not a good idea because its almost like overdosing on the medication. So Im trying to find other ways to help me quit.
I pray that my dizziness is temporary, I do not want to go back on the effexor. I pray that God will bless you and have mercy and favor towards you and all those suffering with anxiety and depression. Physicians and medications are helpful but I believe ultimately God sees us through, although it is difficult to understand why we have to go through this... I also started taking something natural called "Peace of Mind" to calm my moods, it is by BeautiControl.
Maybe you really need just an adjustment in the effexor up or down ? I've tried Paxil, Zoloft, and Prozac, and I know effexor is tough to start, and tough to stop, but maybe you need it. My daughter had problems cutting back on zoloft when she was pregnant, but she was able to take a lower dose all the way to the last two weeks, and both her and baby are fine. I hope you feel better, if you need to talk, I'm here to listen.
I have been taking effexor xr 75 mg daily for 2+ years and have no thoughts of soon discountining it however; I know many that have come off of it and have a really hard time..I would advise you to ask the dr. to help you wean off of it...
But they wanted to see what had the best effect so they even tried me on effexor XR, I just switched overnight and actually was okay except for a few minor side-effects. I then had the crazy idea, after five years I decided maybe I should quit this stuff all-toghether? I had been on the effexor for several months at this point, and felt okay for the most part but didn't want to be dependant on this type of stuff for the rest of my life. I was worried about what the long term effects might be.
Hi, I have been on effexor XR for 3 years and I have gained about 40-50pounds, most when my dose was increased to 225, now I am on 75mg b/c I'm getting ready to wean off the medicine in a couple of weeks, and I haven't lost anything yet. My eating habits have not changed and I exercise. I have always been underweight and I could eat whatever I wanted...I'm only 26 years old...I know my metabolism has changed some, but not enough to pack on 40 pounds.
This is a very common side effect with many meds, including the effexor XR and should pass as your body adjusts to the med. If it persists, you naturally need to let your doctor know. If you have not had any problems with dizziness up to this point, it's my guess you won't, even as you continue to titrate. There was a mention of a decrease in appetite, but again, I will assume you would notify your doc if this became a real problem.
