Effexor xr and pregnancy risks

Common Questions and Answers about Effexor xr and pregnancy risks

Avatar n tn I would like to hear from someone who took Effexor xr before and during pregnancy. I have suffered from GAD and severe Depression for several years, But have had success with the Effexor xr. I tried to decrease my dose from 3 75mgs. to 1 75mgs. I am feeling depressed and find myself not being able to handle situations that didn't seem to bother me when I was on my full dose. My husband and I are wanting to try to have a baby, but are afraid that the Effexor will harm the baby.
Avatar n tn If I were to start withdrawing now I wonder if the damage would have already been done?? Good luck to you (and me) with effexor and pregnancy - it's a very hard decision to make and I am also reluctant to stop taking something that is helping me so much. Let me know what you decide to do or email me at ts.***@**** Love from hangin'in there!
173732 tn?1226762294 According to the manufacturer of Effexor, there are no available reports on the use of Effexor during human pregnancy. Effexor should be used in pregnancy only where the benefit to the mother clearly outweighs any potential risk to the fetus. Alternative agents should/may be considered. If the doctor and patient decide to continue venlafaxine during pregnancy, discontinuation symptoms should be considered in the newborn at birth.
468784 tn?1207160705 I just finished getting off Effexor XR after a year and a half. I started reducing March 11, stopped taking Effexor totally 10 days later (doc assisted, too). If you aren't pregnant, I took a dose of SAM-E to help with those withdrawal feelings. I took it every day for 3 days, then every other day for 4 days after stopping the Effexor and that seemed to help with the icky feelings. Only took it after that if the feelings were really strong (and occassionally they were).
Avatar m tn I am not majorly bipolar or have any major issues other than having depression over some childhood sexual abuse and anxiety. I had been taking the Effexor XR among a million other things when I found I was pregnant. I went through 3 months of withdrawal. I was taking clonazepam for my panic attacks. I was on so many stupid drugs I didn't need. I am also a born again christian and God had a plan for me. By getting pregnant, I was able to get off 10 unnecessary meds. It was a miracle.
Avatar f tn I have been on Effexor XR 37.5 mg. for about 3 months now and just found out 3 days ago that i am pregnant. I have called my obgyn and they have suggested to get off the medication completaly with no weaning off. I have a child that is 14 months so i know what pregnancy is like, it's not like this so i beleive it is the side-effects of getting off of Effexor. I'm so dizzy i can not drive, and also having peircing headaches and i am very weak.
Avatar n tn Hi, I have been on Effexor XR for 3 years and I have gained about 40-50pounds, most when my dose was increased to 225, now I am on 75mg b/c I'm getting ready to wean off the medicine in a couple of weeks, and I haven't lost anything yet. My eating habits have not changed and I exercise. I have always been underweight and I could eat whatever I wanted...I'm only 26 years old...I know my metabolism has changed some, but not enough to pack on 40 pounds.
629668 tn?1222918454 the safest anti-depressant med during pregnancy is prozac. talk to your doctor. my friend was on effexor when she got pregnant and her doctor made her slowly stop it right away.
Avatar f tn I know many people still on it and they report that they had a much better response to the name brand Effexor XR than with the Geneic Effexor XR. If it were me and I could afford it, I would go with the name brand.
Avatar n tn I have been on Effexor 75 XR for approximately 18 months and have gained about 20 lbs. during that time. I am almost 50 years old and other than being pregnant, my weight had not varied more than 3 lbs since I was 18, until I started taking Effexor. My doctor guaranteed me that it would not cause weight gain, she put me on it to help with hot flashes and insomnia. She also assured me that I wouldn't have any trouble getting off of it because I am on such a small dose.
Avatar n tn Before I got pregnant I went to a high risk OBGYN and they told me to take Zoloft during pregnancy, not Effexor. I am on 175mg of Zoloft now and still feel anxious. I called the OB and they said to take Ativan .25mg when needed, but not daily. It does help some.. I started to see a therapist as well and she tells me that after our hormones level off alittle anxiety usually decreases as well. Just know- we are never alone. There are so many pregnant women dealing with this horrible anxiety.
Avatar n tn I've been taking 500mg metformin myself and I have not experienced any weight loss. I am actually taking it for diabetes treatment. But it has not helped with my weight loss.
Avatar f tn Saturday, August 17, 2013 I started taking Name Brand Effexor XR 150mg 10 years ago with very much success and not one side effect. Fast forward to after I got pregnant, my doctor weaned me down to 75mg, then 37.5, then zero within two weeks. Luckily TennCare kicked in and started me on 37.5mg for fear of miscarriage and I stayed on that dose because I believe the benefits outweighed the risks. I felt wonderful and had a great pregnancy with no depression, just a slight increase in my anxiety.
Avatar n tn I took Effexor XR for depression during the first trimester of my pregnancy. I now have a healthy two year old boy!
211940 tn?1267884866 She thinks it's most likely just a side effect of the pregnancy. It would be nice if it is temporary and goes away when the baby is born.
Avatar n tn I have been to about 30 doctors- including ENT's allergists, neurologists, chiropracters, opthamologists. psychologists, dentists and everything else u can think of. All CT scans, MRI of brain and blood work keep coming back clean and ok. Nothing I try seems to work. There was a period of time about 3 and a half years ago that the symptoms lifted for about 4 months and then it returned full force.
544292 tn?1268886268 D I just love you guys! Such honesty and kindness and willingness to help. It's such a blessing! Avatar n tn And also took Effexor XR for depression....My son came out healthy and fully alert... With no withdraw effects..He has had no ill effects from the pain medication, and an antidepressant... My son is now almost 7 years old...If anyone wants to talk I have had eleven years experience with pain, pain meds, pain management, and pregnancies while on pain medication... I am currently pregnant now, and have been taking nucynta off and on throughout the pregnancy when my pain is unbearable...
Avatar n tn I was using it after the loss of my sister and my uterus. I went off Effexor and went on Topomax and I've lost 30 lbs. I lost my appetite at first (good riddance) and had a minimal amount of tingling in my fingertips, but this stuff has been great. The headaches have improved and I can't wait until the FDA officially approves it for weight loss. So what if the soda tastes bad. Who needs it.
Avatar n tn Hello, I was wondering if any of you all have been put on hormones after a total hysterectomy. My doctor says there are too many risks and I don't need them...I am 38. I don't know what to expect here 2 weeks after surgery, I keep waiting for a hotflash or something weird to happen. :) What can happen if I don't take them? I've had nightmares of growing hair on my face or my voice getting manly. Are my fears real? Can anyone share their experience or knowledge about hormones?
Avatar n tn You need to continue the medication for couple of weeks as advised by your doctor and try to avoid trigger factors like alcohol, smoking and stress. It is better to consult a neurologist and get evaluated. Take care and updated on your thoughts and progress.
