Avatar n tn As far as I'm aware, benadry is safe for quite a long time in dogs. The general doggy dosage is 1 mg/ per pound, so that's what your vet has prescribed - most people tend to go too low on the dosage. Using it for only the summer months should be no problem at all. I had a dog who needed it a good 8 months or more of every year and it never caused any trouble. Hope it works well for your Bostie!
Avatar m tn ” “For people with dog allergy, avoidance of dogs is the mainstay of therapy. Allergy medications are likely to help control symptoms, but in many instances symptoms may persist if the person owns one or more indoor dogs. Allergy shots may also be a good treatment option for people who are allergic to their pet dogs. Dog owners may not want to part with their pets, despite the symptoms they endure.
Avatar f tn The allergy shots can give added relief without the use of medications. Currently there are no reliable allergy shots for food allergies. The only treatment for food allergy at this time is avoidance of the offending food. It is unlikely that the Frontline is causing an allergic reaction since you placed it on your dog 2 weeks ago. If allergic to Frontline the symptoms would have been apparent within 4 days, and usually the symptoms occur within minutes to hours.
Avatar n tn I recommend starting by taking your dog to your veterinarian for assessment of the itch and medication recommendations. The most common reasons for itchy skin in dogs include skin infections, microscopic skin parasites such as scabies mites, food allergy, or pollen/dust allergies. Since scabies mites are difficult to find, I trial treat dogs for scabies with Revolution every 2 weeks for 3 treatments.
Avatar f tn The vet gave me this ickey brown stuff for my dogs wounds. Is there anyway to stop the dog from biting it's paws without medication? Or is it just something I'd have to watch.
Avatar n tn Instead you will be aggravating your allergy. For you, avoidance of dogs is the mainstay of therapy. But if you can’t part with your dog then you can spray areas where your dogs spend their time (carpets, sofas) with an anti allergen spray. . Wash your hands after having contact with your pet. Bath the dog at least once or twice a week and wipe the dog with a wet cloth or hand towel daily as dog allergens also attach to a dog’s fur, which carries the allergens about.
Avatar n tn Hey, I am not too sure if that can be done. Instead i would like to ask you not to try and keep the pet if you are well aware that dogs cause allergy to u. I am unaware if there is a "serum " like that.
Avatar m tn One thing many people do not realize is that if a dog has a food allergy that it takes up to 6 weeks for that allergy to not affect the dog once the food has been switched over to another food. When you are checking a dog over for a food allergy, you cannot give him ANY OTHER type of food OR any types of treats. He may only have ONE food, no treats. Finding a food that will not cause problems can take several months of hit and misses.
Avatar n tn DOGS CANNOT TAKE DECONGESTANTS!!!! They cannot metabolize them. If your dogs ears are that bad they are in need of antibiotic and antifungals. You can ask your vet to prescribe an antibiotic like cephalexin and an antifungal like fluconazole both which can be called into a walmart in your area and they are on the $4 generic list so it keeps cost down. As for itching they can have antihistamines WITHOUT DECONGESTANTS in them.
Avatar n tn I was recently tested for allergies by a blood test and it came back I was allergic to cats and dogs, but I have heard this form of testing isn't always 100% and skin testing is still needed. Is this true? I have had asthma symptoms for two months now with shortness of breath & chest tightness. I have had a stress test, echocardiogram, PFT, Lung scan, CT, chest x-ray, endoscopy so far and everything normal except for reflux, ulcers in the esophagus and mild asthma.
323551 tn?1255174750 m not technically allergic to dogs, but long-haired dogs in particular flair up my asthma; it has never been so bad for me that I've avoided having them, however. The HEPA vacuum and filters in general helps me a lot so I can keep my furry friends.
874521 tn?1424116797 Food allergies only account for 10 percent of allergy problems in dogs. Dogs often can not tolerate soy products, wheat, corn, beef, pork, chicken, milk, whey, eggs, fish, chemical preservatives, or artificial sugars in their food. Determining the food allergen can be time consuming. First, eliminate all the possible allergens from the diet, by using a home made diet consisting of a protein and a starch the dog has not eaten before.
Avatar f tn Does anyone know what could cause a sudden change in allergies? I suddenly developed an allergy to everything environmental (that I've been tested for.) Every tree, grass, pet, dust mites, etc. These allergies cause swelling, breathing issues, sneezing, hives, and the list goes on. I'm 21 years old. Is there a reason behind a sudden drastic allergy change, or is this fairly common?
Avatar n tn I take prescription medications for my HTN. What over-the-counter allergy medication can I take for occasional allergy discomfort (sneezing, itchy eyes, congestion)?
118225 tn?1278654940 But some people have to go back to taking shots others never need to. As for when you will feel better maybe 6 months. But if you stop the shots the allergy could come back fast, so you got to keep doing it for a long time to make sure it doesn't come back. If you are going to go through all that you should do a full allergy testing. It takes the same amount of energy to cure 1 allergy as it does 50 allergies. Might as well make the most of your injections.
Avatar f tn 1. If you are someone who can carefully follow directions, buy a book that tells you how to make your own kidney diet dog foo. It is doable; my dog has chronic kidney disease, diagnosed almost 2 years ago and is doing better on home made food, which he loves & energetically eats. But it is very important that you add in the correct supplements that the author vet tells you, in addition to the food. I follow the recipe from the book Dr.
Avatar n tn If it does turn out to be the milk, she may have lactose intolerance or a dairy allergy. Dogs can develop food sensitivities or food allergies anytime in their lives to any food, even something like chicken, if they are allergy prone. If the problem becomes more frequent it may require investigation by your veterinarian. A food trial may be warranted. This consists of feeding a hypoallergenic food for 8 weeks and nothing else during that period of time.
Avatar f tn Yes, dogs can have allergy issues with molds, and the onset of symptoms after moving is suspicious. I would also be concerned about microscopic skin parasites such as Cheyletiella, which can live in the environment for up to a couple of weeks, and if the prior resident had pets this may be a problem. I recommend using Revolution Spot on instead of Frontline for 3 doses, as Revolution will kill both fleas and microscopic mites.
Avatar f tn Good question for the Vet. I'm not familiar with the fish & sweet potato variety. I look first at a food to make sure its grain-free, and then I look at the other ingredients. The fewer ingredients the better for pets with allergy issues. I started giving my dogs and cats "Fresh Factors" by Springtime Inc. (just throw on top of food for dogs, for cats, crush up with back of spoon and mix in with wet food ) and it seems to make everyone noticebly more energetic/healthier.
683609 tn?1226764977 I recommend starting by taking your dog to your veterinarian for assessment of the itch and medication recommendations. The most common reasons for itchy skin in dogs include skin infections, microscopic skin parasites such as scabies or demodex mites, food allergy, or pollen/dust allergies. The red spots and hairloss/swelling of the foot the you describe are suspicous for a bacterial skin infection.
Avatar f tn Do you see fleas on Chubby? It only takes one flea bite to trigger an allergic reaction, and flea baths/powders do not work. I recommend using a better flea control product such as Advantage, Frontline, or Revolution every month on every pet in the household.
Avatar m tn m making excuses to purchase a pup that will be born in two weeks and available around January. I thought there might be a few severe allergy sufferers that have found a way to live with dogs that could possibly contribute their methods to this feed.
679466 tn?1247006054 Redness, skin irritation and itching are very common symptoms of allergies in dogs. Since the symptoms come and go and improve with the cortisone cream, she most likely has allergies to environmental factors such as pollen, grass, and dust.
