Hello, I see is has been a while since your ordeal. Hopefully you've found a sensible solution. While I don't have IBS, I do suffer from chronic constipation from heavy narcotic use for chronic pain. I was just prescribed 24mcg Amitiza and told to take them twice daily, haven't started yet. What I have done in the past is one capful of miralax and 200mg of colace per day. Just recently I learned of something the medical field refers to as the "GI Cocktail".

This AM the nausea was so bad I called the GI group and was told to stop taking the Amitiza for a few weeks and that the most common side effect of the drug is extreme nausea and it should ALWAYS be taken on a full stomach. In it's place she put me on 3 Metamucil tablets each morning and 1 Colace, then 1 Colace at night. We are trying this for 2/3 weeks and then maybe ease back in to the Amitiza.

Having said all of the above there is one difference I noticed with the Amitiza and that is the medication has greatly reduced the syncope episode I was having during a bowl movement which were occurring about once a month. Since I have been prescribed a Amitiza, which was about six months ago, I only had one syncope incident which by itself is a help to me. I hope my brief exegesis helps.

this is known as off labeling...where a drug is intended for one purpose but used for another....in this case insomnia......

Hi, the most reported common side effect of amitiza is diarrhea. It can also cause abdominal distension, nausea and abdominal pain. It can also cause fecal incontinence. Like your doctor suggested you can continue this medications for a few more days before you give up this medication. Regards.

Amitiza and Lactulose were the only ones that needed a prescription. Amitiza makes some people very sick. Things like milk of magnesia won't make your condition worse.

t get completely clear.I was put on a drug to help heal the ulcer and a proton pump inhibitor.I just want to know if it is safe to amitiza.I am on opiods so I need it.

My daughter began amitiza and it has worked wonderfully, however, she is spotting in between periods. Is this common?

Hi Candy, I really don't know how common it is but I also have IBS that just keeps getting worse... I only have bowel movements once maybe twice a month... I know it's hard to believe but it's the truth.. Also, I used to never have bloating and pain in between those movements... But, in the last few months my stomach stays distended, I cramp until I double over, and nothing seems to help... My doctor said it's a combination of the MS and the medication...

Is it a lightening bolt sensation? You may be constipated and pressure is irritating your anterolateral cutaneous nerve (meralgia paresthetica). You could start taking Miralax, a prebiotic, and magnesium citrate to get things moving. If that isn't enough, you might need the rather expensive Rx called Amitiza.

I have been tested for hypothroidism which was negative. He has now gave me a prescription for a new drug only used in trials, and basically if this doesn't work, next option is surgery.. Is this my only option,? I know its a major operation and just feel that maybe I am too young to have some colon removed. There is a lot of forums that contradict the benefits of the surgery and some now have chronic diarrohea which I don't particularly want either. Any suggestions???

I am not as ill as you are, but I noticed awhile back that some beers helped me a lot. I was able to eat more normally and not feel so ill. Wine made no difference, so it was not the alcohol.
