This really doesn't sound like it's herpes to be honest. He should get a herpes lesion culture done though if it's been more than a few days the chances of it being negative are pretty high. The only other option is to repeat his blood test in a few months.

Are you getting frequent outbreaks? You might think about suppression - taking valtrex (convenient once a day but expensive) or acyclovir (twice a day but way cheaper) daily to reduce outbreaks.
Hello, i have had herpes for 2 years now my doc put me on valtrex 500 daily everything was good untill a week ago the meds were not doing anything so i doubled then trippled dose ended up going to the doc he said that i should have never been put on the valtrex daily and urged me to stop taking it, so now it has been a week and my out break is just getting worse what do I do?????
Some folks do not tolerate valtrex for whatever reason. If you think you are having more ob's while on valtrex or "worse" ob's - the first thing I recommend is going to be seen when you have symptoms to make sure that it's only herpes going on. If you picked the right gender when you registered here then you are female and for us gals - many, many things can go on down yonder to further complicate our herpes/mimick herpes ob's.

I had it swabed and the doctor said it was not herpes. I upped Valtrex to 1500mg a day for five days and nothing happened. Could I be allergic to the Valtrex and only have a rash on part of my body? Any ideas what to do? I thought it might be a herpes rash, but I would think after ten years, the rash would go away within 7-12 days. It seems to be getting worse even using the Valtrex. Any help would be appreciated.
d stop taking valtrex at this point and get a repeat blood test done. The herpes WB or the biokit igg hsv2 test would be the best ones but wait until 4 months since the last possible time of infection to get it done in case this really is a newly acquired infection and you are still in the process of seroconverting.
Herpes eye infections are usually hsv1 in adults. Even the best blood tests we have now still miss 1 out of every 10 hsv1 infections.

I just don't like the thought as I wouldn't like to be dependent on any drug especially taking an antiviral everyday. However I suppose the positives (no outbreaks) out weigh the negatives.

Hi, I read that Valtrex prevents herpes replication. Would this medicine have any use in preventing possible infection of the ganglion? For instance, lets say you take Valtrex before or right after a sexual encounter or possible exposure. Would the medicine stop the replication of the virus inside your skin/body and prevent it from taking up a permanent home inside the ganglion?

do you have hsv1 or hsv2 genitally? do you take daily suppressive therapy to protect her?
no taking zovirax doesn't make it worse. not sure where you read that but obviously not a reputable place :( Daily suppressive therapy with zovirax/acyclovir reduces ob's by 70% on average which helps to have less disruptions to your sex life.
I read that steroid makes herpes worse... So if steroid is helping then u know it's not herpes.
I believe the dermatologist will be able to do the swab ...

I have not had any outbreaks at all, I occasionally have burning and itching, but beyond that nothing else. I have been on supressive therapy w/ Valtrex since the end of may. I have had pain on lower right abdomen, under my ribcage it feels, and pain on my right lower back. Is this a symptom of Herpes, or can this be a reaction to the Valtrex?

no he has no idea what he is talking about :( You don' t become immune to valtrex by taking it long term. we have info on the herpes antivirals used suppressively for almost 25 years now ( acyclovir ) and the rates of resistance are the same as they were prior to their use for herpes.

A few questions first- 1) Were you diagnosed with genital herpes? and 2) Are you taking Valtrex only during outbreaks or everyday for suppressive therapy?
If you recently acquired herpes, outbreaks might occur frequently, usually no more than once a month. I'm not sure if the itching you are experiencing is a sign of another outbreak (3 weeks is a little soon, but I'm not sure if impossible)...I guess you will find out soon enough.
Unfortunately, I have zero faith in anything he tells me because of the cavalier way in which he discusses not only herpes, but any medical issue. I'd be willing to take valtrex if it actually benefited a seronegative partner? Thank again...
