As such I contacted my doctor and was prescribed valacyclovir hcl which I took (2 1 gram tablets twice daily). The cold sore remained small and eventually went away. After this I went 1-2 days without taking any Lysine or valacyclovir and on the second day I noticed the cold sore coming back again and now appears to have come back and crusted over. I did not think the new cold sore was actually one but then it crusted over.
Yesterday, Saturday, 12/26, we went to an Emergency Clinic. There the doctor said she did have Shingles. She prescribed Valacyclovir 10 mg tablets, her anti-viral, takes three per day for seven days, also prescribed Mupirocin 2% for the blisters and Hydrocodone/APAP, SMG/325mg Tabs for pain. Recommended if pain is unbearable to go to the ER for possible admitance to Hospital and intravenious pain care. So far she has slept a lot. Thanks for your help.
Due to high fever, i went to er , they did a test for herpes and called me and said I have it. They prescribed. valacyclovir hcl. I just started taking it today. I read that this can be common with people who have aids. I have not had unprotected sex deliberately but condom broke. I had a steady girlfriend but broke up one. I am 18 years old and was Diagnosed with Shingles on June 22nd after noticing the rash on my back. Since I started taking valacyclovir 3 times a day at 500mg my Shingles has started to get better and clear up. However just today I have started to get a new more painful (Then my initial Shingles) feeling of burning on my right side just around my armpit. Is it normal for new a new rash to start when I have been consistently taking the anti virals? Should I go see my doctor again about this?

However I have had no paid just itching. 6 weeks later it seems to be clearing up but very little. If 3 docs say its zoster then its pretty definitely zoster. The valtrex dose given by Londres is correct for the time when the outbreak is present. In my country Valtrex is not licensed for suppression of zoster. You are taking the dose that suppresses the majority (but not all )of simplex outbreaks. The dose to treat zoster is higher than the dose to treat simplex, so I am guessing that the dose to suppress zoster may be higher than the dose to suppress simplex.
In my case, my aunt (who was practicing at that time) prescribed me Valacyclovir HCL 1 gram tablets. I take 2 by mouth every 12 hours for 1 day (so 2 tablets, then 2 tablets 12 hours later, then done). This treatment has worked every time for me, and the symptoms are gone 12-24 hours after the 2nd dose. Hope this helps someone out there!

I went to my doctor, he said he thought it was shingles. He prescribed Valacyclovir. I had actually put Cortisone on it starting a couple nights ago and this seemed to help a little.
I have been in a monogamous relationship for several months. Both my girlfriend and I were tested for STD's about 3 months ago - including HSV IGG test - and were clear.
But of course, I knew better because the internet told me so. She dismissed my request to test for Shingles (swab) and tested me for Herpes and HIV (blood test). The results would take about a week. By now I was broke. My insurance is laughable and I had spent all I could at this point in trying to treat my hemorrhoid problem (script is $40 for about a weeks worth) and copays for office visits trying to get this diagnosed and treated.
Fluid from my right eye was removed and much blood as well, and sent to the lab for various tests. The tests concluded that I had shingles and that I had no underlying condition to cause it. My immune system is absolutely fine so the etiology is unkown, but the theory is that it was caused by Prednisone that I had taken for poison ivy.
Treatment consisted of valacyclovir 6,000 mg/day for several months, and finally on my last appt., about 4 months ago, I was clear.
