Urinary infection in dogs

Common Questions and Answers about Urinary infection in dogs

infection

Avatar n tn You may not even have to bring your dog in for an exam if the urine is positive for a simple urinary tract infection (an infection without crystals). The vet can simply give appropriate antibiotics. If your dog has crystals in his urine, the crystals would need to be identified and treatment instituted. Crystals can be dangerous in male dogs because if they become large enough they can become lodged in the urethra and cause blockage (even in dogs, though more common in male cats).
Avatar m tn This is a very common problem encountered in dogs and cats. The most likely diagnosis is a bladder stone. Rarely are urinary tract infections so severe that the owner can detect blood. It could be a UTI but either way your vet will need to see her. Expect a urine test and radiographs be recommended. Both of these conditions are quite painful so please seek veterinary attention immediately.
Avatar f tn Cranberry pills can only help with the pain of a UTI by sweeping the byproducts of the infection out of the urinary tract. It will not treat the actual infection. Urinary tract infections can be terribly difficult to treat for any animal, be it human, canine or anything else. All it takes is one little bacterium to survive treatment and the infection comes right back. That's one reason it's so important to take all antibiotics until they're gone.

You don't mention how old she is, but older dogs often lose muscle tone and sensation, which medication can sometimes help. Kidney failure would be something to look into as well. If it's behavioral, you have no choice but to keep peed-on areas as clean as possible. Carpet that routinely gets urinated on will draw the dog back time and again.
Avatar m tn As Karla mentioned, Urinary tract infections are the most common cause of blood in the urine. The infection may be in the kidneys, bladder, or urethra (the tube through which urine flows). Dogs and cats with urinary tract infections will usually urinate much more often than usual, and they may have fevers as well. In male dogs, blood in the urine may mean that the prostate gland, has become infected. Dogs with an infected prostate gland typically have a swollen penis and testicles.
Avatar f tn If she has blood in her urine, she has a medical problem that MUST be treated. It's likely a urinary tract infection that can be easily and cheaply treated with antibiotics. If you truly cannot afford medical care for this pup, then you shouldn't have adopted her. Adopting a pet is no different from adopting a child - you are responsible for every aspect of the animal's well-being. As for the peeing when you scold, that tells me your dog has a scared, insecure personality.
Avatar n tn Good morning to you! Sorry to hear that your old girl is having a rough time! Have you discussed the potential of arthritis with your veterinarian? It's estimated that more than 20% of dogs in the US have arthritis. You might call your veterinarian and ask about safe and approved arthritis medications for dogs. A good exam should also be done, along with blood work and a urinalysis to help determine what is ailing her. When was her last physical?
Avatar m tn First, you need to have a Vet rule out any Urinary Tract Infection and/or Bladder/Kidney Stones causing the urination...If all medical issues are clear, then retraining is next....Most times older dogs have a fixable reason to suddenly start peeing in the house......
Avatar n tn Bed wetting suddenly in a dog who has never done that before, can mean a urinary tract infection, or early stage kidney insufficiency. I would definitely get a urine sample, and take it and her to the vet for a check. If it comes back as a UTI, then that usually is easily treated with a short antibiotic course. Also, ask for her bloodwork to be done, to be on the safe side. My dog's ONLY symptom of early stage kidney failure was bed wetting and drinking more.
Avatar n tn , but if your dog has not been spayed then potential reasons for a bloody vaginal discharge would be a heat cycle (which occurs every 6 months in dogs) or an infection in the uterus or urinary tract. Your veterinarian will be able to tell what the cause is based on exam and microscopic analysis of the cells lining the vagina.
Avatar n tn Humphies comments, with which I agree, I wanted to mention that the majority of urinary tract infections in dogs are due to gram negative bacteria which respond best in general to antibiotics specifically geared to kill gram negative bacteria. Baytril and Orbax are both the same antibiotic. The difference is that Baytril is given twice daily and Orbax is given once daily. Both are specific for gram negative bacteria and in most cases are effective to clear up urinary tract infections.
Avatar f tn hi everyone, my dog is a 4yr old jack russell terrier and today I've seen her urinating a lot, like maybe 10 times or more since 10am, its now half 4, this is a lot for her and seems a lot in general. It's not marking territory, its just unirating. Is it possible for dogs to get cystitis? What could I give to help her or do I need to give her anything?
Avatar n tn Our perfectly trained five month old black lab has had three pee pee accidents in the house in the last three days. This is jury really not like her. She recently had a urinary tract infection and would fight us not to go backi n the house because she had to keeping going to the bathroom. Could this behavioral, something to do with the UTI or do we just start the training all over again?
Avatar n tn The formula was created by **** Van Patten. I believe he was very dedicated in finding quality in foods for dogs and cats. You can also cook for her. Some chicken broth with pieces of chicken, and heaven will make her happy. Just try and keep her motivated when switching her to better nutrition. I strongly believe in home-made recipes for our pets, or raw meat, chicken or fish. Don't forget liver and other organs which will give her the boost she needs.
Avatar m tn However, protein can show up in the urine if there is a urinary tract infection. If there is a urinary tract infection, that should be treated with antibiotics, obviously.
Avatar f tn There is usually a co-factor, such as a depressed immune system. Bear in mind that a urinary tract infection may result from any one of several varieties of bacteria. Some of these critters are more dangerous than others. In some cases something as simple as drinking fresh cranberry juice and reinforcing your immune system with vitamin C and D3 can be sufficicient to solve the problem. In other cases medication may be necessary.
Avatar m tn Once you mentioned the extreme amount of blood during her final days I knew that this was likely a common urinary tract cancer called Transitional Cell Carcinoma (TCC). TCC is more common in older dogs however can be seen in dogs as young as 2 or 3 years old. It starts of as an infection and then causes urination troubles, pain, weakness, and eventually a lot of bleeding. My condolences to you and your family, I hope this helps a little with closure.
Avatar n tn s possible that it has turned into a Kidney Or Bladder Infection.....These conditions are very painful in dogs just as they are in humans.....I mean extremely painful!!!!! This will only get worse without treatment......You need to get into your Vet ASAP (Tomorrow) & get her some help......Oral Antibiotics will be given after a Urine Sample is cultured...... They will want to see her for a followup to make sure the infection has cleared after her Antibiotics......
Avatar m tn The bacteria can be found throughout stones, and these bacteria lurking in the stones can reinitiate infection after antibiotic treatment. Ask you doctor about this next time you see them.
