378497 tn?1232143585 In general, trigeminal neuralgia is a clinical diagnosis. Patients usually report electric like shocks across one side of the face in part or all of the face. They're usually set off by brushing your teeth, cold drinks, breeze across the face, talking, or even making facial expressions. Your symptoms may be consistent with trigeminal neuralgia. You may want to ask your neurologist about your symptoms.
Avatar f tn Trigeminal nerve is it. Neuralgia is when you experience pain along the trigeminal nerve. The most disconcerting of these was the pain I got behind my molars on the left side - a sharp stabbing pain that felt like I'd been shocked with an electric jolt.
Avatar f tn I first started noticing the trigeminal neuralgia pain when cool breezes would hit my cheek. Prior to that I had numbness and tingling for years in that area. I hope it doesn't develop into something more painful and just stays at numbness.
Avatar f tn Common cold, sinusitis, ear infection, sensory nerve compression, peripheral neuropathy as in diabetes, inflamed wisdom tooth, impacted wisdom tooth, dental caries, etc can all cause facial numbness and pain. Hemi facial numbness is also seen in Bell’s palsy, trigeminal neuralgia where a spasm may cause numbness, or due to acoustic neuroma which is a benign tumor of the eighth cranial nerve. Maybe the accidental injury aggravated any of the above reasons.
Avatar m tn I am now suffering recently from a lot of pain in my right ear. From time to time I feel numbness and almost a heat sensation on the right side of my face. Would caffiene cause these symptoms or should I be worried about something more?
Avatar f tn the other thing is numbness in right side of face. lost my hearing in the right ear for a couple of hours one time.
Avatar n tn Thank you for your question. This may be Trigeminal neuralgia as you have typical one sided facial pain extending to temple and eye( ophthalmic branch of trigeminal nerve may be involved) and sore gums of the teeth of same side (maxillary branch of 5th nerve). Trigeminal neuralgia may have a triggering factor like recent history of tooth extraction, touch, cold breeze or hot sensation etc. which you need to evaluate and avoid.
Avatar n tn However, I had the same symptoms you were having and was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia. Its where one or more of the three main nerves in your face cause nerve pain, or neuralgia. The first nerve lays across the eyebrows, the second lays across your cheek bones and the third nerve lays across the chin. My doctor put me on Lyrica and Klonopin and it seems to help a little, although the pain does intensify and the pain medication does not work for it since it is nerve pain.
Avatar n tn Hi, I have had trigminal neuralgia on the right side if my face for 5 years and I am medicated with tegretol which generally controlled it. My left side began to hurt but a very different pain more of an ache and my jaw clicks. My dentist referred my to a specialist who said it was TMJ. I have a bite guard etc and have had some teeth re shaped. Recently my bottom lip on my left side is numb, no pain just numb. Is this the TN, the TMJ or something else? (Need a new face!!
Avatar m tn Had a small outbreak of Shingles on the left side of my face 2/20/16 that turned into Post herpetic neuralgia. Which attacked the nerve root of my Trigeminal nerve.Since then I am in constant pain and numbness on the left side of my face, lower lip, teeth and gum.
Avatar n tn Hello, From your symptoms the possibilities of trigeminal neuralgia and temporal arteritis need to be ruled out. Trigeminal neuralgia is painful swelling (inflammation) of the nerve (trigeminal nerve) that delivers feeling to the face and "surface" of the eye. Trigeminal neuralgia causes severe, short-lasting (only a few seconds) facial pain on the side of the affected nerve even by slight touch. Mostly affects elderly females. May be caused in multiple sclerosis also.
Avatar f tn The various causes of facial numbness on one side of the face are diabetes mellitus, peripheral nerve trauma, stroke, bells or lower motor neuron palsy, acoustic neuroma and trigeminal neuralgia. Consult a neurologist if there has been any such recent development in your husband. Dental consult is also warranted to rule out trigeminal nerve involvement or any dental cause of numbness. Take care.
Avatar m tn ve since then lost 3 teeth in that area and am now left with chronic right sided face pain literally the whole right side of my head. I had a MRI last month that was negative but the pain is progressing. It now includes my right ear as well. I've be treated with neurontin and tegretol with no relief. I can't even find a surgeon to do an exploratory surgery. WHAT CAN I DO I AM REALLY IN PAIN?
Avatar f tn Facial nerve palsy is characterized by inability to close eye, loss of sensation on affected part, difficulty in speaking and mask like face on affected side because facial nerve innervates facial muscles and any damage to facial nerve may cause inability make facial expressions like smiling, frowning etc. Second possibility is Trigeminal neuralgia - neural pain of face with possible loss of sensation on the affected part of face but eye is seldom involved.
373367 tn?1246402035 Sounds like trigeminal neuralgia to me. I've had pains in the left side of my face, from the ear to the chin, for some time now. Sometimes it feels like a headache in my chin, sometimes like a pinprick or electric shock.
Avatar f tn but it could possibly be trigeminal neuralgia....a not uncommon pain syndrome in MS. Carbamazepine is the standard treatment. Let your neurologist know so you can be properly evaluated and treated.

Avatar f tn org/diseases-conditions/trigeminal-neuralgia/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20353347 It can be nerve pain that is shock like but also some report numbness in the face. They do treat with various medications. When is the last time you spoke to your neurologist about this? During your decompression surgery or shunt placement, they could have indeed done 'something' that needs to be addressed. You wrote this a month ago. Has anything changed?
335728 tn?1331414412 I have MS and Trigeminal Neuralgia and I recently took a long trip on an airplane (8 hours). When the plane was descending every time (5 landings) I had an excrutiating pain in my right side of my cheek which subsided once the plane had landed. I am wondering if this could be a sinus problem or if it could be trigeminal neuralgia? I have no other symptoms of sinus problems...i.e. feeling congested, runny nose. I have CÖPD and Asthma as well but they are under control with medication.
