Avatar n tn I had to ask him how my results were and thats when he told me my thyroid was underactive. My father also has a underactive thyroid and takes a pill every day. Now when the doctor told me about the underactive thyroid he gave me another blood test and I still havent heard back from him. Do I need medication like my father takes everyday for this? I always feel tired. bad memory and I dont know what I should do, If I should see another doctor about this, or if I need medication.
Avatar n tn Weight gain can be related to a number of different causes, including of course low metabolism due to low thyroid levels. If your thyroid levels (mainly Free T3), are too low, then that is what should be addressed first. You need to identify and address the cause(s) instead of considering appetite depressants.
Avatar m tn TSH is a pituitary test, not just a thyroid test. TSH tests what the pituitary is telling the thyroid to do - so with it bouncing around, it may or may not mean thyroid, it may mean something else. Just testing TSH alone is pretty silly for a doctor - it is not compete enough and since roughly 20% of the population has a pituitary disorder, and that can impact TSH... well, heck, I would rather you test what my thyroid is doing - find another doctor who will test your Free T3 and Free T4.
Avatar n tn s is an auto-immune disease that pits your immune system against your thyroid, and eventually the immune system wins. You may have had thyroid antibody tests run in the past to confirm this. If you have been bumped up to 125mcg, your thyroid is slowly failing. You may eventually end up at 150mcg or maybe 175mcg. With a TSH of 10.8, I'm guessing you don't feel very well. Your TSH should be closer to 1.5.
Avatar f tn Please post the ranges for the results. I think your daughter needs to be on thyroid meds. Very important that she feels well and has good levels - for academic and social performance. She is growing and thyroid hormones are critical to optimal development. I would think 25 mcg/day would be a good approach. Then test after 6 weeks, but don't adjust unless the FT3 and FT4 are not optimal. Optimal for most people would be FT3 and FT4 in the upper half to 1/3 of the reference range.
Avatar m tn so I underwent for a thyroid operation, extracting the whole thyroid as adviced. Now my endocrinologist is telling me to undergo RAI treatment, Question is, is RAI traetment really needed for my case eventhough I dont have existing thyroid?
Avatar n tn I would definitely look into having your thyroid removed. Even though you might have to be on the thyroid medication for the rest of your life. I have read of less chance of you developing thyroid cancer. My TSH and T3 is normal but my left thyroid gland is now "cold" non functioning possible cancer. Good luck to you on your decision.
Avatar f tn My question is if I have only half of my thyroid now and no symptoms of being hypo that I am aware of, unless you consider the hot flashes throughout the day that are nothing more than a wave of heat and getting clammy that last from 1 to 3 minutes, and the occasional intermittent chills that can last for an hour or so across my back, what should I expect in way of treatment?
Avatar f tn s happened to you within the 3 months after treatment. Did you have your thyroid removed so soon after treatment (?) or have you been treated with thyroid meds. A few people on this site have worn wigs etc., and I understand thyroid contributes (or can cause) hair loss. I'm sorry you've had such a difficult time - not everyone gets thyroid problems so that may be the percentage you're talking about. I hope it's all uphill for you now.
Avatar f tn This question comes up about every three weeks, so you are not alone in this quest. If you have Hoshimotos disease (antibodies attacking the thyroid) the answer is no. If you dont know if you have Hoshimoto, you need to find out. Supplements may support but not cure hoshis, you need thyroid replacement hormone meds for life. Although people on the 'natural herb' bandwagon jump all over natural dessicated thyroid (pig thyroid), in the end its a manufactured medicine.
Avatar f tn I was born in the Ohio Valley in 1955. The doctor had a radiation treatment done on me prior to me going home to start my great childhood. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism approx. 20 years ago. Each time I go to my doctor, I have the same problems... fatigue, weight gain, dry skin. depression, and lost libido. I request the doctor to increase my Synthroid. He is reluctant. I'm sure I need to go to an endocrinologist.
Avatar n tn The first physician recommends thyroid scan and uptake and then the iodine treatment, with a prednisone taper for my eyes prior. He says I am slightly anemic so I should bypass the antithyroid medication. The other physician is against doing the thyroid scan and uptake and recommends going directly to antithyroid medication and prednisone for the eyes. What do you think is the best route.
Avatar f tn the interferon ramps up the thyroid and puts in into overdrive and then can somewhat damage it and as treatment goes on or after tx. the thyroid gets underactive( hypo)..in other words not working so good and the numbers will rise. The bad news if this happens ..it is usually the way it stays ..however the good news is the medication synthroid is a simple once a day med to keep the thyroid hormone in balance if needed. It is well tolerated Best Will . http://www.endocrineweb.
767308 tn?1236691712 I have never heard of steroids for thyroid treatment. I am sure whomever had the steroid treatment was probably treating something besides thyroid cause that just doesn't make sense to me. Good Luck!
Avatar n tn Is it best to have the RAI treatment after thyroid removed, with large lymph node, that all contained pappilary cancer, even if the thyroglobulin test is zero?
Avatar n tn The RAI is to ablate any left over thyroid cells. Even with TT, they can't always get all tissue. Depending on your dose, you may be kept in isolation in hospital, or at home. Sometimes your taste buds are affected for a while, and possibly your saliva glands. If your doctor allows, you can use Thyrogen, instead of going hypo. You would go on a low iodine diet (LID) for two weeks prior to RAI.
Avatar m tn When I finally talked my doctor into thyroid med, it did help some and so we continued to increase over the years until I was taking 200 mcg of T4, but I still had lingering hypo symptoms. Almost 8 years ago I ran across this Forum and learned about the importance of Free T3. Up til then I had only been tested for TSH and Free T4. I got my Free T3 tested and confirmed as low in the range because my body was not adequately converting T4 to T3.
Avatar f tn It might take a few days for it to slow down. If it really gets too bothersome, I would even take a couple of days of the lower and then start alternating. Armour is T4 and T3 in "natural" form from desicated pig thyroid. The ratio is not as it is in our thyroid. Don't quote me, but I think its something like 5 times more potent in T3 (or ratio of T4 to T3). T3 is Cytomel is synthetic form of T3 that you can add to Synthroid (T4).
Avatar n tn You probably have subclinical hypothyroidism , you should check if you have thyroid antibodies (TPO and anti-Tg) and also do an ultrasound of ypur thyroid. With symptoms you should start medication.
Avatar f tn The fatigue is because you are off your thyroid meds. I haven't had the treatment, but hopefully someone who has will post soon. Good luck!
408795 tn?1324935675 also check your thyroid, many of your symptoms sound like what a bad thyroid can do to you. HCV is known to affect the thyroid. this disease is easier to treat earlier then later.
Avatar f tn My doctor says no treatment is needed. My understanding is the anitbodies will continue to destroy the thyroid. Should I be treated or wait until the free t4 is lower and my TSH climbs?
