Common Questions and Answers about Armour thyroid treatment

armour-thyroid

Avatar n tn before retesting according to the dr. The dr. says taking Amour Thyroid caused the abnormal labs. She thinks Armour Thyroid is not meant for humans because it is pig thyroid. I pointed out that lots of medication comes from animal urine, tropical plants, etc.. She will not do any other testing as far as the thyroid is concerned. She does not see a purpose for all the other test.
Avatar n tn She prescribed 30 mg of Armour (not 100% sure that is what I received as the bottle just says thyroid porcine) once a day. Is there anything I should know about taking this? It is in a gelatin capsule and it came from a compounding pharmacy. It did not come with any write up on how and when to take it. It is not something I could easily separate as it is in a capsule. I am taking it for a month so I can see if any of my symptoms resolve.
Avatar f tn Hi...Thank you for your response. I am going to alternate dosages and hopefully this will help. I had heart palpitations for two days and could hardly navigate when I started taking the higher dosage. I'm in search of a Dr. that specializes in Thyroid and I would really like to try the Armour. I am not familiar with Cytomel, in fact the Dr. has never mentioned that as an option. What is your TSH level?
Avatar n tn Please can you tell me if thyroid treatment ( armour thyroid) would have had any effect on laser surgery. I had lasik and prk and the targets were not reached . one plus and one minus and an enhansment has been suggested.
Avatar f tn t seem to have a clue about thyroid meds and proper treatment. You have gone down from 90 mg of Armour ( 57 mcg of T4 and 13.5 mcg of T3, which is equal to about 110 mcg of T4) down to only 88 mcg of T4. Not only that but T3 is much faster acting, so when you change to T4 only, you need to transition, in order to avoid the letdown while the T4 builds up over 4-6 weeks to take the place of the T3.
Avatar f tn I am specifically interested in feedback from folks who have had or know about problems associated with only using Synthroid after having the thyroid removed. Has Armour worked? or at least a T3 supplement to the Synthroid.
1139187 tn?1355706647 neuropathy (pins and needles like bees stinging randomly all over my body. My blood pressure elevated and I had pressure behind my ear drums, not really "ringing" but pressure, like my eardrums would burst! I told my EX endo about it and she said it had NOTHING to do with the drug. That I needed to see neurologist! I was not experiencing these things BEFORE the Levoxyl! She liked my blood test numbers went from TSH 7.65 down to .4. She said to stay ON the drug!
Avatar f tn Therefore I´m getting all the more convinced that I would rather use Armour Thyroid instead. But I have a question about Armour due to the fact that I have Hashimotos. I have caught information from many sources (books and internetsources) that the natural porcine hormone extracts in Armour "feeds" the TPO-antibodies and thus encreae the antibody titer. Is this true or is it only a myth? If Armour encreases the antibody titer I wouldn´t dare to ask my doctor to prescribe Armour.
Avatar n tn I have been steadily gaining weight since she prescribed cortef 10mg and Armour thyroid 30mg 2x day with continued fatigue and exhaustion. After several years, I was informed if there may or may not be underlying thyroid conditon. I struggle with many other potential symptoms such as fatigue, cold extremities, dry skin. My endocrinologist does not want to try me on synthroid. She firmly believes in Armour.
Avatar f tn It has been 1 year since my TT for CA of thyroid and 3 lymph glands- Did 150 of RA-131 at that time and have used synthroid then armour, now synthroid again due to the unavailability of armour, in that time..Have gotten some conflicting views-via looking for info, so would like your professional view on the best treatment for my follow-up. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME IN ANSWERING MY QUESTION.
Avatar f tn First - thyroid supplementation is for an underactive thyroid, bot an overactive thyroid. Both Armour Thyroid and levothyroxine are thyroid supplements - levothyroxine is T4, which is the form of hormone produced by the thyroid gland, and which is converted to the active T3 form. Armour Thyroid contains both T4 and T3. Some patients don't seem to convert T4 to T3 quite the way they should and this may explain why some feel better on Armour Thyroid.
Avatar f tn I was born in the Ohio Valley in 1955. The doctor had a radiation treatment done on me prior to me going home to start my great childhood. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism approx. 20 years ago. Each time I go to my doctor, I have the same problems... fatigue, weight gain, dry skin. depression, and lost libido. I request the doctor to increase my Synthroid. He is reluctant. I'm sure I need to go to an endocrinologist.
Avatar f tn Dr. Lupo: I have been on Armour Thyroid 15mg since Aug '08. All symptoms (fatigue/hairloss/muscle soreness/blurry vision/dizziness/feeling cold) stopped at first week of treatment but after that first week, I developed stomach inflammation (just had an endoscopy indicating inflammation consistent with daily aspirin intake). I do not take any aspirin or motrin, etc.. The only drug I take is Armour Thyroid. Is it possible to be react to Armour Thyroid in this way?
Avatar n tn We have a doctor who is making home visits, and I am very thankful for that, but I want to make sure we are treating her right. She has been on Armour thyroid for about 24 weeks, and we have been slowly increasing her dosage. Choking 4 times a day while waiting for her thyroid to stabilize, so her allergies will diminish, seems like too much of a risk.
Avatar n tn I cut back from 90-60mgs Armour but have not cut it out. I do believe I was hypothyroid and do need treatment. I am waiting to see one more endo and after that I will make a further decision on meds and maybe go back to Syntrhoid. I've never been comfortable taking groudn pig glands anyway being a vegetarian and a factory farm campaigner!
767308 tn?1236691712 I have never heard of steroids for thyroid treatment. I am sure whomever had the steroid treatment was probably treating something besides thyroid cause that just doesn't make sense to me. Good Luck!
Avatar f tn After learning about the importance of Free T3 here on the Forum, I got mine tested and confirmed as low in the range. Got my doctor to switch my meds from Synthroid to Armour Thyroid. After some tweaking, I am now taking 3 grains of Armour. My Free T3 is now 3.9 (range of 2.3 - 4.2) and Free T4 is .84 (range of .60 - 1.50), and I feel best ever. For info my TSH has been around .05 or lower for about 30 years now.
535882 tn?1396576685 Listen,be very carefull when it comes to compounded thyroid or even Armour. Neither can be regulated. In fact I believe Armour is going to be taken off the market because it cannot be regulated. I too take Armour and I prefer Armour to Synthroid or even compounded however, I think Armour may have some issues as far as purity. Have you has your adrenals checked? I am on 3 grains of Armour which is the the equivalant to .
13586802 tn?1430668002 I'm 73 y.o. so it is not a surprise that I have health challenges. I've been on Armour Thyroid 90 mg. daily for 6 years. In the past 20 months I've also been twice treated for hep c. The first was in January of 2014. The treatment was grueling and ultimately I relapsed. In May of 2014 I was diagnosed with atrial fib. Had a cardiac ablation in Oct of 2014 which was helpful. I still have fairly frequent PAC's unless I take a low dose of sotalol (20mg twice daily).
Avatar n tn My friend has hypothyroidism and has a family history of others in family not responding to synthroid, only to armour. she is currently at 0.275 mcg and is still showing low thyroid levels. She is having terrible hot flashes and sweats. Her doctor refuses to try her on armour even for a month to see if she responds to it. Is 0.275 a pretty high dose? How can she get her doctor to listen to her or how can we find a doctor who will give her the armour? We live in Portland, Or.
Avatar n tn I have a relative that is using Armour Thyroid while she was leaving in the United States. She moved to Spain and would like to know if it is possible to get the same medication there or if there is an equivalent medication in Spain.\ Thanks.
