Stroke symptoms during pregnancy

Common Questions and Answers about Stroke symptoms during pregnancy

Avatar n tn I am 34 and had a stroke during my 25th week of my pregnancy. I had AVMs. I had my first stroke at 25 also by an AVM. I was told by my neurosurgeon it was ok to get pregnant but I don't think any human can predict if its safe to have children if you had a previous stroke. Now the doctors say its up to me if I want to try again. They just don't know. I am in the same boat wanting to know if their are others out their that had an ok pregnancy after a stroke.
Avatar n tn I guess we want a sibling for our son, but I feel I will never be brave enough to have another pregnancy. I just cannot think about something happening during a pregnancy and leaving my son without his mom. As for panic and anxiety, I suffered a panic attack about 3 weeks after the incident and that is also scary. My mind was consumed with "What if's?" And having migraines since then are another reason to cause me worry.
Avatar n tn Of course I'm nervous, but I'm going to take it day by day, and hopefully everything will work out. Has anyone had a Stroke during pregnancy, and then had a healthy pregnancy/baby afterward?
580765 tn?1274922960 I have noticed no correlation between the occurrence of the episodes and any other conditions, other than the progression of the stroke- like symptoms in and around the time of the racing episodes. A neurologist that I saw Tuesday ruled out MS and other neurological conditions, based on several clear MRIs, nerve conduction tests, and lumbar puncture results. He said that all of my symptoms were likely due to an electrial misfire in my heart.
Avatar n tn I am now 25 weeks pregnant and finding my symptoms to be getting worse and worse daily--has anyone else dealt with ADD during pregnancy and if so how did you cope? I am beginning to feel a little like i am losing my mind and and like i might run out of my job screaming at any moment.

Avatar n tn Does anyone know if melatonin is safe to take during pregnancy? The only real problem I have right now is getting to sleep. Usually I would take a lorocet just before I passed out, but I'm doing so good today. I don't want to take any more than I have too! I've taken melatonin before when I had problems getting to sleep & it worked great with no groggy feeling. Also, I've been noticing, ever since I've cut down on my pills & I go to sleep, sometimes I jump.
Avatar n tn my period finally became normal andfor aybe the past four months i've been feeling sick i've taken pregnancy tests all came up negative.
Avatar n tn The cardiomyopathy or increased clotting of blood during and immediately following pregnancy could have led to stroke, or it could be due to any other preexisting condition like hypertension. The possibility of another stroke depends on the actual reason behind it. Some time before a stroke, some people experience a few minutes of weakness on one side or part of the body, which is due to temporary lack of oxygen to the brain- called a transient ischemic attack.
Avatar n tn then you should be very careful because your hormones change during and especially after pregnancy. You should probably check with a high risk ob/gyn. I was also on the pill for a brief period of time right before I got married and my leg got heavy...I didn't follow up with tests because the heaviness went away. It wasn't until afer I gave birth that I had problems. My doctors don't think that it had anything to do with with hormones, but they don't know for sure. where are you located?
Avatar n tn My sister-in-law had a hemorrhagic stroke with a intracerebral hemorrhage. This was on May 18th. They have done a Ventriculostomy. The gas man found her in the driveway. We figure it had been somewhere between 20-35 mins. before she was found. They have her in a medically induced coma where they say she will stay for the next 3-4 weeks. Is this normal? Also, they did a cat scan on the 18th, and 19th and we were told the bleeding had stopped.

Avatar n tn There are many medications used for migraine headaches, but less are available to you during pregnancy. I would reccomend that you see a neurologist who has expertise in headaches. Such as a member of a headache center. I hope this has been helpful.
Avatar n tn Other causes include hypothyroidism, amylodosis, and arthritis to name a few. It may also arise during pregnancy and resolve after delivery of the child. Also, this nerve or branches of it can be injured with the insertion of intravenous lines. The sensory changes usually are worse at night. Patients may complain of having to shake their hand to wake it up. Over time, you may develop atrophy of muscles of the thumb supplied by the median nerve.
Avatar n tn If you didn't have the spine imaged, you should talk to your doc as MS can show up there too. Hypothyroidism can certainly be a cause of your symptoms. Once treated adequately, your symptoms may improve. Another test that may be helpful is an EMG to see if this a problem of your peripheral nerves. Laboratory workup such as ANA, sed rate, blood count and electrolye profile can also help rule out other potential problems such as lupus and other rheumatological disorders.

158812 tn?1189759426 said, since he ordered a test that his OWN hospital REFUSED to perform on me as a result of my pregnancy. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge w/MRI's or CT scans during pregnancy?
Avatar f tn They got worst and my symptoms they thought were pregnant related also stuck around. I know now, this was all chiari related. Why did they heighten during my second pregnancy? I have no idea. I wish you the best of luck and will keep you in my prayers!
1038794 tn?1252925252 Agree with ENTMD, sounds Neurovascular. As ENTMD suggested, I would try to get an appointment sooner to see the Neurologist. Definitely no ENT Situation I think. Sounds like you had preeclampsia before this birth and it has not really resolved. You should also post in the Maternal and Child Community.
Avatar n tn My symptoms are worse during my period too. I really think this is hormonal more than something like MS. As far as I know MS doesn`t really have anything to do w/ effecting your menstrual cycle right??? Claire, did you have an epidural or Group B Strep meds during delivery? I had both, and several other women I`ve emailed on here have also, and are experiencing these same things as us.
Avatar f tn My periods were affected because I was working out alot .He mentioned the fact that MS symptoms are almost dormant during pregnancy. HMMMMMMM??????
Avatar f tn While everyone is different and will have a different outcome, there is always the possibility that surgery will alleviate your pain and symptoms and make another pregnancy much easier. Of course, you need to make sure all your docs are working together and everything but many people come out of decompression surgery and are much better and have a much improved quality of life.

1696595 tn?1306603257 How old were the people in your family who had stroke and high blood pressure? Just for clarification, what symptoms did you have if any prior to or during pregnancy? If you keep your legs together, can you bend over and touch your toes? Are you flexible or do you feel more stiff?
Avatar f tn I never ever ever experienced any of these symptoms until I became pregnant. They scare me because I see that these symptoms can be a sign of a brain tumor or aneurysm or stroke. I went to a neurologist and she said she didn't see any reason to do any emergency testing. She said that she has seen these things in pregnant women before. Idk, I'm just scared I've developed something serious during pregnancy and the doctors don't want to do anything because of baby.
Avatar f tn now she looks to another avenue for some answers that may help. Just as a matter of the symptoms during pregnancy...MS symptoms seem to abate and return about 6 months after delivery. It seems that hormones present during pregnancy and the immune system changes, (that allows the foreign "being" to develop without the mother's body attacking the baby AS a foreign invader or infection) prevents or stops MS symptoms in it's tracks. If only for a little while.
