469720 tn?1388149949 As you may have noticed by now, the focus of this forum is cardiovascular disease(CVD) prevention. The statistics speak for themselves. CVD is the leading cause of death in the US and worldwide. Although we have made substantial progress in the development of medications to combat the causes of CVD like high cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes; the rapid proliferation of these diseases virtually negates and medical benefit. In other words, we are treating the consequences, not the cause.
Avatar m tn An elevated Lp(a) cholesterol level in the bloodstream increases the stickiness of blood, and contributes dramatically to the formation of clots and the chance of a heart attack or stroke. The European Atherosclerosis Society now urges doctors to check Lp(a) in patients at moderate to high risk of cardiovascular disease. The society says bringing a patient’s elevated Lp(a) cholesterol level under 50 mg/dL should be a treatment priority.
Avatar f tn If he was falling frequently, sometimes the risk of staying on these meds (bleeding with fall that could lead to death) outweighs the benefit (stroke prevention which is a few percent per year), which is something his physician needs to determine. Given his age, and history of blood in stool and falls, it is reasonable to keep him on warfarin (coumadin), especially due to the evidence in people over 75 on Pradaxa, and the difficulty of reversal with Xarelto given his falls history.
Avatar m tn There are published studies of vitamin D levels and the risk of cardiovascular disease. Vitamin D levels greater than 30–40 ng/mL (75–100 nmol/L) may lower atherosclerosis risk. How vitamin D works Vitamin D may reduce atherosclerosis in several ways: Reduces inflammation: Vitamin D shifts cytokine (protein) production away from inflammation. Most patients (94%) had an ischemic stroke; only 6% had a TIA. For a control group, the ethics committee allowed the researchers to use a matched cohort of 160 patients who had not had a stroke and who had had urine tests for various reasons. The problem with the controls, Barber said, was that researchers knew only their age, sex, and ethnicity.

Avatar n tn Hypertension seems to make Small Vessel Disease worse, so its very important to keep your PB under control (because of my stroke, I was told to keep mine below 135/85). My stroke left a acorn size lacunar infarct of the basal ganglia right caudate head. This is typically the area of the brain that suffers from hypertension effects with small infarcts as the capularies here are very tiny. If you go to and search for Small Vessel Disease you'll find a very few pages on the topic.

612551 tn?1450025775 I recall my cardiologist being uncomfortable with the length of time I would be without clot prevention medications. I have permanent atrial fibrillation, so my heart is in the clot production mode 24/7. I have been back on warfarin and aspirin for two days and believe my INR is back in the 2-3 range. In fact I took 50% extra warfarin for the two just past days.
