Common Questions and Answers about Stroke prevention mayo clinic

Avatar m tn We are not sure, but it is possible that my dad had an aortic aneurysm from what I was told. Mom had stroke at age 71, then heart attack took her at age 73. Both parents had high blood pressure where mine is fine at 115/75 average. My weight is fine at 5'5" and 135 lbs. I do take after dad as far as dental health (periodontitis) though I'm getting that addressed this week after years of ignoring it. I am aware of increasing evidence with oral health and heart health.
Avatar f tn FYI, one of the foremost experts on BAV is at Mayo Clinic, Dr. Thoralf Sundt.

1344197 tn?1392822771 Most guidelines for the prevention or treatment of osteoporosis recommend the use of calcium supplements, despite the fact that they reduce the risk of fracture only marginally, write Dr Mark J Bolland (University of Auckland, New Zealand) and colleagues.
Avatar n tn I would suggest that you ask your cardiologist to refer you to the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Heart or John Hopkins. They have cardiologist there that cover most of the different known heart syndromes. They will look at the entire family, even if there isn't any history. My son showed no reason for his situation. The mutation may be there, just hidden.
21064 tn?1309312333 I have been taking 325 mg for about a year....there is good information on both Mayo clinic and webmd. you really should put them in your favorites.
Avatar f tn bcat I personally would resist having the AV node ablation as it would make you pacemaker dependent for life. If your present meds make life bearable I would stay with that. I too am in permanent afib but hardly notice bcause the meds I take (cardizem and altace) keep my heart rate at about 70 at rest. I too have an enlarged atrium (LA diam. of 5.2 cm) and have been told that an ablation would likely not be successful.
220917 tn?1309788081 (Not the most serious kind) He said, if it takes going to Mayo clinic, go there. If Mayo says you're faking, I will PERHAPS enetertain the thought. Had to love him for that. Helped me feel sane. Aug 07 I went to an MS clinic in my area, and the doc there spent 3 hours with me. You know how when you go to the doctor you always feel fine? Not this time! I was at my worst, weakest. And my cognitive function was deteriorating.
Avatar n tn But to be objective, you need to see both sides. Here's what the Mayo Clinic says about the side effects of statins; "Muscle pain The most common statin side effect is muscle pain. You may feel this pain as a soreness, tiredness or weakness in your muscles. The pain can be a mild discomfort, or it can be severe enough to make your daily activities difficult. For example, you might find climbing stairs or walking to be uncomfortable or tiring.
Avatar n tn I have sent a similar description to the Mayo Clinic asking for help, but it doesn't even acknowledge PMA without headaches on its website. Any help would be appreciated. Our son is an extremely bright, articulate, and talented in so many ways. I would love to give him the gift and joy of being able to see and read normally. Thanks. This discussion is related to Persistent visual disturbances without headache.
Avatar n tn she is going to be tested for ehlers-danlos which she may have been already checked for, neurologists did not tell us just what they looked for. i am ready to check out the mayo clinic and see what they may know. this is a very scary problem, as some have stated, in that how does one carry on with life - physical activity or not. our daughter was told she could not do most all activities and for how long??? anyone's guess.....
Avatar n tn The first case appeared this summer, then again about 2 weeks ago and sure enough again tonight!! I have done it all too, chemicals, olive oil, mayo and tea tree oil.... AAUUGGGHH! The mayo and the olive oil seem to be the most effective. The best thing about those is that the nits slide right off the hair shatf.... I AM SO OVER THIS!! We cut 7 inches off my daughters beautiful thick hair, I cried, she loved it. But now its back again!! My husband is deployed and I want to cry...
Avatar m tn You need to be assertive (not aggressive) about your healthcare. Go to reputable websites like Mayo Clinic, webMD, National Inst of Health, and more. Learn and make a list of questions for your doctor. Don't ever be afraid of asking too many questions. Remember you have no obligation to them. And it's your right to get a 2nd or even 3rd opinion. It's your life and you need to assert yourself.
Avatar m tn I think the worst part hasn't been the pain, it's been the lack of answers from the medical authorities on what is wrong with me. The Mayo clinic has turned me down for an appointment, as they don't feel there is any more they can do for me that hasn't already been done... and I'm like... NO ONE HAS DONE ANYTHING! It's a nightmare, and my wife and I are so damn frustrated by the whole thing. The worthless neurologist I saw locally had me stand up, put my arms out and then touch my nose.
Avatar m tn I guess the Tim The Tool Man Taylor wing of the Mayo Clinic I'd planned to leave some of my millions of virtual dollars to build is out of the question now ... ;) Your observation that current stenting technology can place additional strain on an artery seems to be a sound one. All that plaque and corruption and rough material has to go somewhere, and in the case of stenting, it simply gets crushed outward into the walls of the artery the stent is presumably designed to protect.
1187071 tn?1279373298 I'm making an appointment on Monday to see another one at the Mayo clinic. I would also just explain how the injury occured and that is all. I wouldn't say anything bad about any other doctor either. I feel so bad for you hon!
Avatar m tn I thought I would share with you what was told to me by Just Answers from a Dr at the Mayo Clinic. I was told to contact Johns Hopkins since I live so close to them. The best way to get answers is to go to a Medical school where they have resources to the most updated information and they have access to certain research studies and a "team" of Dr's instead of just ONE DR to work on the problem.
304153 tn?1194827741 They now have classes in my town, to help familiarize all the new cases as their isn't time to educate them in offices being overwhelmed with new cases...and the clinic I go to has 100-200 new cases per month, the city has a thousand new per month. People present in so many stages it's not funny. If someone somes in, and bleeds out from the esophageal complications, they don't chuck that up to hep c on autopsy.
Avatar n tn I have a tough time concentrating and am in the process waiting for the doctors to respond back to me regarding an appointment with Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN for a 7th brain surgery to replace the vp shunt with an "updated version". I am dealing with stabbing headaches and dizziness everyday. I have found that cranial sacral therapy has helped in the past and I have an appointment scheduled this coming Tuesday. The therapy works for 2 to 4 days.
Avatar n tn If I feel it will be around for a while I generally take 1/2 to 1 plain aspirin for good measure and prevention. I try to relieve the acid, gas and bloat sometimes with a teaspon or two dose of epsom salt disolved in 8 oz of water which usually results in a complete clean out from any where between a 1/2 hour to 3 hours of taking it.
Avatar f tn It happened to me last night and it was the most horrible experience ever I tough I was having a stroke, now my body aches really bad. I also was diagnosed with fatty tissue all over my liver couple months ago, and of course my first tough was maybe my liver is not functioning how it supposed. Don't know but I'm really concern. I have kids and I don't want them to see me sick.
Avatar m tn Here is 50000iu capsules. So what do you guys say. Should we give it a go? And then post labs in a month?
Avatar f tn The GYN just said my body would absorb the blood, and that the pain must be caused by something in my digestive tract. Finally, I went to the Mayo Clinic where they repeated the ultrasound. Imagine my relief when the radiologist ( a young female) told me about post ablation tubal ligation syndrome. She said not many people know about it. I am having a hysterectomy next week. I was so relieved to finally have an answer.
181575 tn?1250202386 In conclusion, we have seen a major shift from a reactive to a proactive approach in the prevention of resistance during hepatitis B therapy.
Avatar n tn I thought maybe I was close to having a stroke. I did injure my neck several years ago and did not keep up with physical therapy. After reading other comments, I think there is something occurring in the neck/spinal area which cuts off the blood flow while sitting and then WOOSH, upon standing, it all flows back in. At least that is what it feels like. I'm discouraged about seeking medical help since the majority of you say you've been to neuros, cardios, etc. to no avail.
Avatar n tn I'm a 54 yom, and have been having these type of incidents the past 3 years. The 1st time it was the lower lip, and I thought that it might be stroke related as it also felt numb. I rushed to my Dr, who did some tests, but was unable to determine the cause.
Avatar n tn I ran this thought process past the head of Otolaryngology at the Mayo Clinic, who had also never heard of such a problem, and he concurred that this theory did make sense. However, there were no guarantees due to the fact that no one had ever seen or heard of anything like it before. So, I went ahead with the surgery on 10/26/06. It seemed to go well. For 3 months, I had no problems. Then on 1/23/07, it popped again, just like it had always done.
Avatar n tn I have researched this on the internet and found out that many people have adverse reactions to the shot and that most cases resolve but there is no cure and even the Mayo Clinic doctors say you just have to wait it out. I think, we, the public are ill informed regarding the ingredients in the shot and the possible side effects. I have been in pain now for three months with no improvement. I will NEVER get a flu shot again.
211940 tn?1267884866 I have the exact same pain in my right arm. I never had any problem until I was recovering from a stroke and emergency surgery. While in the hospital for two weeks afterward, I noticed a dull aching in my right arm, midway between the elbow and shoulder. The discomfort gradually worsened over the next month until I couldnt use my arm at all. An orthopedic surgeon told me I had torn my rotator cuff and needed surgery but, when he got in there, he found nothing.
