speech

Avatar f tn We had his hearing test done which came out fine and had him evaluated with a speech patholgist who has told us to get him therapy for 2 days in a week and to also have him enrolled in a public school and have him evaluated there . we are from texas and im very unfamilar with the education system here . Any help of that will be appreciated .
Avatar f tn d want someone to rule out the possibilities. Speech therapy can help in more ways think you would think, and would be of no cost if he is in public schools.
Avatar f tn Then if he qualifies, he can go to the public school system early intervention program preschool for free. If he is in another preschool or daycare you like, he could use the school speech therapist for speech as well.
Avatar f tn I would ask the school about his speech. If he's in public school maybe they could do a speech evaluation to see where they are. Five year old boys are VERY immature. His social skills may be behind too.
Avatar n tn S., have the public school system do a free evaluation of speech/language and other developmental issues. And if he needs therapy, find out what services they can provide and if they offer a developmental preschool (some school districts offer busing to the developmental preschool and can take a child from the public school back to a daycare center instead of to your house).
Avatar m tn t know how to contact go ask the public school). At 3 years the public school will take over. DO NOT WAIT!!!!!
500419 tn?1220124743 My son had the same problem in speech at the age 3. My Dr. did not want him to go to head start are preschool. You are the mom I would do what you feel is right in your heart. My child received better speech therapy on his own. When he entered school it was not as good because he had to share his time with other children in speech and only got 10 min. each, when they told me it was 30 min. So you should find out from head start how much time does he really get.
Avatar f tn If he was quiet, he may have not built up the muscles that he needs to talk. A speech therapist from the school district can help. It would be a good idea to also have him tested if the doctor is suggesting it. If you feel uncomfortable with that, arrange for the speech therapist to work with him to see if there is any improvement.
219373 tn?1274921434 he is not in public school, i homeschool. how do i go about getting an eval through the school system if he is not there?
Avatar n tn If you live in the US your child may qualify for the Early Intervention Program or ELP and receive language and speech therapy in the public school system at no cost to you. You may want to contact you school district for more info and or get a referral from your DR requesting the school district test your child.
1664949 tn?1303075099 yes he gets speech therapy in school and once a week thru a outside speech therapist. He doesnt really sort them they just have to be in a straight line and facing the same direction. I will check the books out thanks..
Avatar f tn Since you are questioning whether or not he may meet the diagnostic criteria for autism, (if at all possible) find an assessment team familiar with young children and autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Has he been receiving the speech therapy in a public school program? Has the speech therapist recommended strategies for increasing you son’s communication behaviors?
Avatar f tn I have been where you are -- crying because I feel so helpless to help my baby. I cried for a week straight once. I was constantly depressed. I got myself some help -- Prozac to be specific-- and within 10 days I stopped crying. Now, I can deal with the situation. I may still be very worried about my child and how he is doing, but I am taking care of myself, so I can take care of him.
Avatar f tn Regardless of diagnosis, absolutely continue to pursue services to help your son with his speech and his temper. Help exists for the issues that you are describing, you just have to keep looking until you find a therapist and behavior analyst who you work well with.
Avatar n tn She still needs speech therapy as she is still over a year behind in her language, which we will get through the public school system as a one-on-one therapy with a speech/language pathologist, free of charge. The children in the developmental preschool were all ranges of abilities and diagnosis. Most school districts try to add some regular kids in to the classroom as well, to encourage the others to speak or try to interact. Hate to break bad news about the potty training thing...
Avatar n tn Is she delayed in her speech or language? I have seen children do this when they are having a hard time communicating with others. I made a necklace out of a teething toy for a child that was having problems with biting. We taught him to bite the necklace when he was angry instead of another child. This really helped him. She could be having sensory issues that can be identified by taking her to an Occupational Therapist. I do not believe this is happening for no reason.
Avatar f tn It was so difficult at first. 15yrs later she is set to graduate high school is in the school play and is over at a friends house as I write. And yes she is autistic. My best advice is to pick your battles. Sydney hates socks doesn't even have a pair underwear either. Everything she does takes time but her time and she excels. Didn't make a friend until 5th grade and they are still best friends. Drawing, and her computer offer a good escape from the worldly disorder.
Avatar n tn This means that your son should receive 20 hours of direct teaching in language, social skills and self-help skills. Services can be provided by the public school in your area. You may want to look for behaviorally trained professionals to supervise a treatment program by checking www.bacb.com for a person in your area.
Avatar m tn If you can not affort the private evaluation, you live in the US and he is turning 3, you need to call your local public school district for help. The school district will need to help you free of charge. Your first step is to see his doctor and obtain a referral to a good child development doctor or psychologist (if you can afford it or have insurance) that can evaluate his current behavior and abilities or he will tell you to call the school district for a free evaluation.
Avatar f tn My son goes to public school in Hudson County. We are new to the school but the child study team and therapists seem quite dedicated. ST and OT in special-ed seems to be the default answer of many public schools to children with nearly any diagnosis. If your daughter's school does not have the resources to provide ABA you have every right to request for her to transfer to a different district (especially since you have a neurologist prescribing the treatment).
Avatar m tn But they are at least better set up to help children with special needs, such as delayed speech and motor skills. Developmental preschool is freely provided by the public school system, provided the child qualifies. I'm starting to go through this process for my daughter who will be turning 3 soon. I am hoping to get her started the week she turns 3, so she can transition from the Birth to 3 program straight into Developmental Preschool where they will offer a speech therapist.
642568 tn?1223322600 If he is in public school I would recommend a diagnostician to check for speech and/or learning disabilities.
Avatar f tn By kindergarten, all kids in the US are screened for speech in the public schools. If you are concerned, you could call your doctor and be referred for a speech evaluation or go through an evaluation through your local school system now that he is three. My older son was evaluated for speech concerns at almost 4 and the speech pathologist concluded he would self correct as his articulation issues were all within normal for his age group.
Avatar f tn t say how old your child is, but the sooner a child with Autism starts getting professional help - the better their life will be. Public schools will provide the help starting at about 3 I believe - contact your local special education department in the school system. But, your doctor should be able to provide you the necessary contacts - or find a different doctor that can help.
