Avatar n tn with in these 9 months he learned like hunderds of words and spelling, phonics. and also he started reading himself kindergarten books.he knows his colours, shapes, alphabets, counting, and he is learining additions himself by lookin g at the chart. but he is not sitting still in the school in circle time, sometimes not listing to teacher, would not finish the task fully, when teacher calls his name he is not paying attention, less eye contact in the school and in the home.
Avatar f tn He just completed his k5 year and has been in speech for two years. The speech therapist believes he has a language based delay. K5 was very difficult with the phonics approach. After 6 mos of trying to teach him the alphabet and sounds with little success, I bought a leapfrog DVD. Surprisingly, within a few weeks, he knew ALL of his letters and sounds. As far as going to blends, it was an epic fail.
Avatar n tn I have had some feedback from my sons nursery, which completely contradicts his tutors assessments and views. My son is 3.5 and is currently working at end of reception yr in number and letters/phonics. The nursery is saying that because he doesn't have one particular interest that they can tune into, he will struggle at school. Now this completely contradicts a reception teacher who sees him often enough to sugggest he is gifted.
Avatar f tn My 4 year old granddaughter has obvious speech problems. It is very hard to understand her. Her speech patterns have also changed. She used to call her mother "Mama-ee" and now she calls her "Mahee". She cannot pronounce her own name, Meaghan. I want my daughter to get her a hearing test and she says she does not think she has a hearing problem.

He was reading almost to grade level and she put phonics back into the picture and now he is jot reading at all. Do I have a right to be upset or are my hormones just taking over?
Avatar n tn I am a mother of a 4 year old boy diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder a year ago. I am interested to find out more about Childhood Apraxia of Speech and the targeted therapies as Imy son has this condition in addition to the ASD. My son is currently in specialised unit for ASD kids under 5. He has a lot of initiative to try and speak and communicate with us and his teachers but his speech consist of single syllables that are often inconsistent.
Avatar n tn My son is 6 years old and also has speech delay. He now attends a Speech and Language unit. Unlike your son, I was a full time Mum and Granny also lives with us. So he was showered with language, play and good examples of speech - but still made no difference - so don't be too hard on yourself. Early years are incredibly important as children learn so much by example. I would suggest that you don't ever correct speech, but instead praise and model a good sentence structure/words for him.
Avatar f tn However, he only talks like that to me - never his father. He has spent the last 2 years in speech pathology, as he has problems with both phonics and language. He is, however, very sweet and incredibly smart - he is reading at a year 4 level in year 1, and his vocabulary is astounding. He loves cars and can recite endless details about "super cars", but doesn't seem to understand that others dont wish to talk about them all the time.
Avatar f tn i have started putting my ipad up to my belly with YouTube videos of phonics and learning stuff and he reacts to the sound...i just cant wait to meet my lil guy.
Avatar f tn It seemed to loosen up my speech a little. then on the way home there were times when my speech seemed a little crazy. I just found out from my boyfriend that he thinks I have sleep apnea also, but apparently this has happened on and off for two years and I have always snored so I assume that this would not be another sign of MND. It is just so scary.
Avatar f tn Btw, getting a birth to three person can help with speech. He should qualify for speech therapy which does not mean he has autism.

Avatar f tn They make all kinds of games for kids as they are learning. Phonics games, math games, Scholastic has a lot. I also like teachers supply stores, they have an unending supply of fun educational things for kids to do. To foster creativity, buy things for her to make collages out of. Music may interest her------ a kindermusik program or musicgarten (google for places in your area). Make sure you pursue physical endeavors and social endeavors as well.
Avatar m tn For some reason phonics was introduced to supposedly help those with reading writing problems, yet those with those problems tend not to learn through phonetics!! I too have been told to encourage reading by choosing a book he is interested in, and then reading the parts that he cannot read and encouraging him to read what he recognises, even if it is only one word out of the whole page.
Avatar m tn hi, I have had speech problems for over a year but have had dental work over the same time. I thought the speech problem was dental related. I'm still waiting for my final implants. I went to my doctor to see if I had a problem with my throat. Since then I've had 2 MRI test 2 nerve conduction test 1 swallowing test all blood work done, urine test done all test come back good... So my neurologist say clinically I'm fine but because of my speech problem I have ALS.
5549102 tn?1376522673 Yes, I've read that. I think that a mother should always keep their eye on things. Speech in the early years is tricky though. Many speech pathologists don't evaluate until a child is three unless they have eating issues. I would consider a half day one time per week preschool for him though. Gives a really good perspective and an extra set of eyes from the valuable insight of a person that sees lots of kids. My son did preschool at age 2.

Avatar f tn Is your son receiving speech therapy? I think that is the most important thing for him to improve his language. If he is already getting speech therapy, maybe he needs it more often.
Avatar m tn Then there is the mechanical part of communicating our language and that is speech. Problems with speech can include just trying to get the words out, pronouncing the words, the tonal quality of our speech, using emphasis and inflection. Problems with speech can be from weakness or spasticity of the muscles of our mouths, throats and vocal cords. Or it can be with the way our brain tries to direct the speech.
470168 tn?1237471245 But it points to the fact that the small differences in the sounds of consonents is not being picked up and obviously has a knock on effect with understanding phonics and reading/writing. We've got our appointment on Thursday.
