Is she delayed in her speech or language? I have seen children do this when they are having a hard time communicating with others. I made a necklace out of a teething toy for a child that was having problems with biting. We taught him to bite the necklace when he was angry instead of another child. This really helped him. She could be having sensory issues that can be identified by taking her to an Occupational Therapist. I do not believe this is happening for no reason.
I live in Ontario, Can. In a small town. We have been to the big cities for lots of testing. EEGs, hearing, eyes, neurologist, etc.
We have a Behavioral Pediatrician and she has seen him twice,first telling me that he is 2 year old boy. He is now 3 1/2. The second time she sent us to a neurologist. He said that he didn't think that he was epileptic and that maybe he was a little to much like his dad. My husband has a learning disability.
He did not want anyone to touch him for years and he had social issues with other kids in school and eventually had to see a psychiatrist in middle school. They didn't really diagnose Aspergers officially back in the 70s and 80s. He might have a very very mild case of it (that's what the psychiatrist said back in the 80s). He didn't go through any therapy at all ever through his schooling...
I would ask the school about his speech. If he's in public school maybe they could do a speech evaluation to see where they are.
Five year old boys are VERY immature. His social skills may be behind too.

But basically it means he cannot put himself in anothers situation and understand what they may be feeling, thinking etc. He can just react in the here and now with how he is feeling. You can help by reading stories and asking him to predict 'what happens next'. Use books he will be interested in. At school the SALT should put together a social communication programme, this will involve whatever they need to work on first.
I would think a community college receiving grant money from our state would be entitled to find someone who can guide him through this class, but I am being told that this is not high school, and this is how college works. Any help on where to go from here. I am sure we have more challenges ahead as he enters the college/work force. I need someone who will help a autistic adult. Any ideas. We live in a small NH town.
Aggressive behavior and delayed speech patterns are common symptoms of autism. Also, consider enrolling your son in a speech therapy program. The sooner you get him started on speech therapy, the better will be the outcome.

Hi everyone! It's been a very long time since I've been on this forum so I thought I'd drop in & see what's up. I also wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS to those of you who are getting clean. . . whether it's the first time or the 10th time, at least you're headed in the right direction. I'm 114 days clean now. Hydrocodone was my DOC. I'd be lying if I said I didn't want it & even still crave it some days.
A good place to start is a speech-language clinic. They can evaluate you if you want to begin fluency therapy, and refer you out if they think it would be something a neurologist needs to look into.
To find a clinic:
1. You can call your insurance to ask about plans and which clinics would be covered
2. You can visit your primary doctor for a referral to a clinic (probably the easiest option and where I would start).

He has a limited understandable vocabulary, he excells in everything except for his speech. I am a stay at home mother and he does not have playtime with many children at all. He has had early intervention but that ended when he turned 3. Now he will begin to have a 45 minute class once a week at the school where he will be able to interact with other children his age.

She is smart and loving and is capable of showing a great amount of kindness to others. How can such a smart girl who can speak and graduated from high school with passing grades be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder? I have asked about aspergers syndrome and have been told that my daughter does not meet the criteria. It has been suggested that she has autistic disorder but how is this even possible when she is clearly smart?
It was so difficult at first. 15yrs later she is set to graduate high school is in the school play and is over at a friends house as I write. And yes she is autistic. My best advice is to pick your battles. Sydney hates socks doesn't even have a pair underwear either. Everything she does takes time but her time and she excels. Didn't make a friend until 5th grade and they are still best friends. Drawing, and her computer offer a good escape from the worldly disorder.
