Avatar n tn Recently I have started gasping for air during the day and sometimes even snorting as if I need to take a very quick breath.Could this all be due to sleep apnea? My upper abdomen is quite often bloated( as if I am pregnant) When I press on it it feels firm and as if there is a balloon under my skin, what could be causing this? A tumor? Fat? This discussion is related to Why am I gasping for breath in my sleep?.
Avatar f tn You need to find out if you have sleep apnea or not. Its important. If you have sleep apnea, you literally stop breathing in your sleep. There is a high risk you will not start breathing again on your own. Do a sleep study at home and if you do have it, its important you let yourself get use to wearing the mask. It took me approx a month. Get on this issue. Its worth it!!
1054090 tn?1343965695 If you do have sleep apnea, the treatment is that you will sleep with a CPAP machine. It stands for Continuos Positive Air Pressure. You wear a mask that blows air down your passages to keep them from closing when you sleep. Cause when they close is when you stop breathing. Id it is determined you have sleep apnea it is vital that you wear the cpap eveytime!! You can die from sleep apnea just as easily as a baby can die from sids.
Avatar m tn My husband has MS. He had a sleep study showing sleep apnea and lack of REM sleep. He wakes a few times each night and is sweating profusely, requiring changing sheets once or twice a night. Is sleep apnea common in MS and related to the disease? He has Primary Progressive MS.
Avatar n tn Exercise is supposed to help achieve better quality sleep. Excess weight can cause sleep apnea, but doesn't in everyone. In some, sleep apnea causes weight gain because of it's effect on appetite hormones and the stress hormones' effect on metabolism. Being a snorer does increase the likelihood of having sleep apnea, though many snorers don't. And the flip side of that - one can have apnea and not snore. And be young and fit. Go figure.
Avatar n tn I have a similar experience except I don't recall any low oxygen saturation readings that lasted for anywhere near a hour. I did, however find myself waking up and feeling like I was suffocating. My Primary Care doctor prescribed an overnight oximeter test, and this confirmed I had low saturation levels during the night. I think made an appointment with a pulmonary doctor in a sleep study center. I had several chest x-rays and that along with a physical exam led to a full sleep study..
612551 tn?1450022175 The pillow was found to be an effective and easily used treatment for mild (respiratory disturbance index [RDI] 5 to 19) and moderate (RDI 20 to 40) obstructive sleep apnea and snoring. In turn it helped to increase the REM stage of sleep and increased oxygen saturations. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn Hi Dr Vinod Thanks for you response to my problem and I understand what you are saying but I am going through a period in my life where all is just too hard. I am not sleeping properly and was recently tested for sleep apnea, I won't get the results for approx 2 weeks. My question is, can disturbed sleep effect my state of mind and hinder my efforts regarding weight loss and enthusiasm to do anything at all.
Avatar n tn I forgot to mention before that there are some things that I think are related that none of the doctors think are... I wake up with mouthfuls of stomach acid at night (in addition to the apneas), and I have major sinus issues to include polyps, a deviated septum, a bunch of thickened diseased tissue, and enlarged tubinates. The sinus issues make it a little taxing to breathe during the daytime, let alone at night.
Avatar f tn Was you sleep apnea diagnosed via I full sleep study, an overnight in a hospital or clinic where you were connected to many monitors and your sleep was observed by a specialist (in my case I think specialist was watching two or three of us, she was not in my room). Sleep apnea is normally accompanied by a low oxygen saturation level, but that measure alone is not sufficient to diagnose.
397460 tn?1268533736 There can be number of causes for snoring like deviated nasal septum, throat weakness causing the throat to close during sleep,Mispositioned jaw, often caused by tension in muscles,Fat gathering in and around the throat or Obstruction in the nasal passageway.
Avatar f tn Snoring does often accompany sleep apnea, but just because you snore does not mean you have sleep apnea and vice versa. Minor sleep apnea is responsive to self-help remedies such as losing weight, eliminating the use of alcohol, tobacco, and sedatives; sleeping on your side, and regularizing your sleep hours. It would be best to see a sleep specialist for proper management and to ease your worries. Take care and keep us posted.
Avatar m tn Best solution to CPAP problems with severe obstructive sleep apnea has been for me switching sides sleep on, and never sleeping on back with arms straight out to side (asphyxiation of JC). Works for me, just a suggestion. I sleep with 'mask' on R side then L side to sleep. Adjusting 'mask' is most important thing. Happy sleeping and breathing at night.
Avatar n tn I'm not sure about the seeing things, but your heart rate being up could be linked to why you feel scared. And it could possibly be sleep apnea. Waking up frequently may also be a sign of sleep apnea, though one does not have to do this in order to have it. A reason you may be waking up could be because your brain is realizing that you are not getting enough oxygen, and this causes you to wake up. Your heart rate being up could also be due to lack of oxygen.
Avatar n tn I am trying to find a link to med given to me by the military that may have caused sleep apnea. a friend said he read that some of the shots given to us before we went to the persian gulf could cause sleep apnea.
5056562 tn?1362952144 Dear Britney, Talk to your doctor about Nuvigil which is for people with Sleep Apnea that keeps them awake and focused during the day. When you have anxiety, many times at night you do not get enough sleep because when you dream, you have anxiety dreaming. My Phyche said that because of the deep depression periods and boughts of anxiety caused the part of my brain that controls the Attention Deficiet Disorder to control is gone. Using some ADD drug really helps even on low doses.
Avatar m tn i was diagnosed with sleep apnea after sleep studies was done and i do not snore at all but i do snort from it
Avatar n tn I have sleep apnea and i been having sleep apnea about 13yrs. now i been on a c-pap machine for a long time now. i just found out that i have autonomic neuropathy.could this be why my legs are hurting at night. could sleep apnea have cause this.
1580703 tn?1651904887 Losing the excess pounds may also help with the sleep apnea. One of the risk factors for sleep apnea is being overweight wherein the fat deposits around the upper airway may obstruct the breathing. Avoid alcohol and certain medications such as tranquilizers and sleeping pills which can relax the muscles in the back of the throat and may interfere with breathing. Sleep on your side or abdomen rather than on your back. And keep your nasal passages open at night.
Avatar f tn Hi, Dr Carolyn Dean talks about sleep apnea and Magnesium supplementation . If you google : Magnesium and sleep Apnea. I have family members who also refuses to use CPAP, so they are trying Mg instead. Still at the starting stage. But what I could tell you is that snoring is definitely less.. :) Sleep apnea causes high BP, memory loss, headaches, poor concentration, fatigue and so many more.. So I'd say, give Mg Glycinate a try..
Avatar n tn My husband was diagnosed with sleep apnea in spite of being muscular and trim. He has not been able to adjust to the cpap at all. Lately he has been exhausted, often headachy, feeling a bit light headed at times and over all unmotivated. He has been able to keep pushing through at work because he was raised on a farm where work is done regardless of how you feel. I recently learned that hypothyroidism can cause sleep apnea. Is this true? What step would you take next?
Avatar m tn So, you could have obstructive sleep apnea and this is diagnosed with a sleep study. As you wait for your evaluation, you could avoid taking alcohol and quit smoking and try to sleep on your side as this keeps the airways patent. If any nasal blocks try to keep them patent with OTC nasal decongestants. And aim for optimum weight with exercises or long walks. Good Luck. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar n tn I forget the number, but a high percentage of patients with heart failure have sleep disordered breathing. If you have sleep apnea and have been physician-ordered to use CPAP, then you really need to do so.
