Avatar n tn I having trouble breathing at night when i lay down in bed. could it be sleep apnea or is it something else. i am some what over weight.could this cause .
Avatar f tn In the last couple of months I've been noticing that as I fall asleep, always right when I start to dream I wake up suddenly because of shortness of breath, it feels like I've slowed down breathing or have stopped breathing. It's a little concerning because it intereferes with me trying to get to sleep lately but it's not like there are any other worrying symptoms going on.
Avatar m tn I would get with my doctor and ask for a sleep study. It could be a lot of things. The first thing that pops to mind when someone says they stop breathing at night is sleep apnea, but your description doesn't really sound like sleep apnea. A sleep study would be the first thing I would try. Good luck!
539750 tn?1226521677 Hi, from your history it suggests that you are having Sleep-disordered breathing. It is important to rule out type of sleep apnea like Obstructive apnea, Central apnea and Mixed apnea. You need to undergo tests to rule out the type of apnea. Few of the tests include Apnea index, Apnea-hypopnea index, Respiratory disturbance index, Desaturation and Arousal index.
Avatar f tn Additionally, opening up your nose will help, but don't count on it helping to cure your sleep-breathing condition. (It's been shown to cure sleep apnea in about only 10% of the time.) The benefit to a septoplasty (and turbinoplasty) is that you'll breathe better through your nose in general, and it'll allow you to use treatment options (CPAP or dental devices) much more effectively. Lasers are a very old technology and is rarely used anymore with this type of procedure.
Avatar f tn If this always happens as you are going to sleep and/or wakes you up from sleep, my first thought would be sleep apnea. Before I was diagnosed and began using a CPAP, I had become very afraid to sleep, and avoided it till I collapsed in exhaustion. Much of what you describe is what I experienced. Since I got my CPAP working well for me I have not had one episode of the sense of choking or difficulty breathing.
Avatar n tn Accidentally while checking for something else, I was Dx this week with sleep apnea. Now I wonder if my breathing patterns changed about the time of surgery, and the changes show up as SOB and apnea. This concerns me because it could be a neuro deficit after surgery. What do you think? Have you heard of sleep apnea after OHS? What have you been told about why you have SOB for so long? I'll hope for a reply--Thanks.
Avatar n tn I forget the number, but a high percentage of patients with heart failure have sleep disordered breathing. If you have sleep apnea and have been physician-ordered to use CPAP, then you really need to do so.
Avatar m tn s the greatest thing to have and now he feels great during the daytime. My husband has sleep apnea and stops breathing several times at night while sleeping. He awakes with a headache, feeling drained, and weak.
Avatar m tn Is there some reason why a partial oral breathing tube could not be used to treat sleep apnea? A full oral breathing tube goes way the heck down the trachea and has a balloon on the end to keep it in place. Since apnea closes off the area at the back of the mouth, one might think that a much shorter tube, just long enough to get past the the back of the tongue/soft palate might provide enough of an airway - without having to thread a tube so far down.
Avatar f tn The Yoga Pranayam (breathing exercises) will relax you and help with sleep problem and get extra oxygen into the blood. These exercises help the body to work on the underlying problem and help to keep the body healthy. When the body's software starts to work well, it will make you sleep, so that it can continue to do body maintenance work in the night. You will see the benefits in a few days. Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume after 1 minute.
Avatar f tn Can't answer the chicken and egg question, but usually insomnia comes from some kind of stress. You could do a sleep study to see if you have sleep apnea or something like that, but if you can't sleep because you can't relax, that's anxiety. There are breathing exercises just for what you're describing. When we're anxious most people breathe in very shallowly. Shallow breathing is nervous breathing.
1486435 tn?1316470899 Hi sounds to me you have Sleep Apnea you may have to have a CPAP Machine..Please ask your Doctor to send you for a Sleep Study that will tell you everything.....Take Care.........
Avatar f tn It sounds like you are suffering from Sleep Apnea. Waking up in the middle of the night gasping for air is from not breathing. Go for a sleep study to confirm this and if it turns out to be true you will just have to sleep with a machine.
Avatar f tn Snoring does often accompany sleep apnea, but just because you snore does not mean you have sleep apnea and vice versa. Minor sleep apnea is responsive to self-help remedies such as losing weight, eliminating the use of alcohol, tobacco, and sedatives; sleeping on your side, and regularizing your sleep hours. It would be best to see a sleep specialist for proper management and to ease your worries. Take care and keep us posted.
Avatar n tn I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea and received one of those machines. Shortly afterwards I lost my insurance so I no longer can afford to go to the clinic. I was told I awake 120x a minute and snore so loudly the walls move inward and outward (nurse agreed with my wife). It went well for about 2-3 weeks when I realized I was removing my tube in my sleep. This went on for awhile till I was let go from my job and no longer had insurance. I could no longer afford to deal with the clinic.
Avatar f tn i have been diagnosed with sleep apnea.....overall,mild obstructive apnea, becoming severe in rem sleep with mild oxygen desaturation.I used a nose prong (resimed) for three weeks no problems at all, then developed dermatitus in and below my nose, sore and unsightly.I tried a mouth splint ,with lots of adjustments, had facial and ear pain.My doctor advised perservering with c-pap,but also adding the apnea was not bad....total rdi=12.1/hr.I am going on a cruise next week, and I am worried.
Avatar f tn what is a sleep medicine doctor?
Avatar n tn the wife seems to toss and turn and only sleeps 2 hours and then is up looking at the clock then she does sleep then up again.her breathing is fine and she is not over weight but she does snore--- maybe a sleep apnea thing---her muscles ache alot and she says that her bones in the feet hurt alot in the morning. we seem to think it might be the meds like the statins that she has changed several times without much help.
Avatar f tn I suggest you follow-up with you sleep apnea team, and consider undergoing a formal or in-home sleep apnea test for more definitive diagnosis. The mandibular advancement device should help, as well as CPAP. The dental device pulls your lower jaw forward, which pulls your tongue forward. If you have a long wait, there are inexpensive low-tech boil and bite models that are sold over the internet for snoring, which does the same thing, but not as well as the formal device.
Avatar m tn Snoring by itself indicates narrowed air passages. It could also indicate obstructive sleep apnea, diagnosed by a sleep test and treated by CPAP. For snoring you should avoid taking alcohol and try to sleep on your side as this keeps the airways patent. If any nasal blocks try to keep them patent with OTC nasal decongestants. Aim for optimum weight with exercises or long walks. If this does help with your symptoms check with your doctor to rule out obstructive sleep apnea. Regards.
Avatar f tn I wake up from a sound sleep gasping for air, could this be sleep apnea? I do snore and have numerous hother health problems.
