Avatar m tn http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ribavirin Pharmacokinetics Ribavirin is absorbed from the GI tract probably by nucleoside transporters. Absorption is about 45%, and this is modestly increased (to about 75%) by a fatty meal. Once in the plasma, ribavirin is transported through the cell membrane also by nucleoside transporters. Ribavirin is widely distributed in all tissues, including the CSF and brain.
Avatar n tn She wrote me a my first prescription for a one month supply of Pegasys (peginterferon alfa-2a) and another for a one month supply of Rebetol (ribavirin). This question regards the cost of these meds. Please let me know if the amounts I paid are in line with what y'all are paying. I filled the prescriptions at the pharmacy of the University Hospital here in Seattle. My experience is that they generally have the best prices on meds in the area.
233616 tn?1312790796 In comparison with corresponding plasma values of ribavirin following a high-purine meal, Cmax, AUC0-144 and AUC0-∞ of ribavirin following a low-purine meal were 136% (90% confidence internal [CI]: 120%-155%), 134% (90% CI: 118%-153%), and 139% (90% CI: 120%-159%), respectively. This study indicates that dietary purines have an effect on ribavirin absorption. Dosage regimens of ribavirin might need to be adjusted according to the purine content of the meal.

Avatar f tn I finished a year-long treatment of Pagasys and Ribavirin in 06/2008. It was successful! 18 months later however, I'm feeling little change from when I was taking the drugs. I'm having problems in many areas. I have chronic fatigue, "brain fog", short-term memory loss, rare but severe memory loss (like a blackout, during which I've had conversations, driven, walked, eaten), lack of focus, difficulty with spacial issues, tremors, acute joint pain, clumsiness and more.
173930 tn?1196341998 Prediction of sustained virological response in chronic hepatitis C patients treated with peginterferon alfa-2a (40KD) and ribavirin. Foster GR, Fried MW, Hadziyannis SJ, Messinger D, Freivogel K, Weiland O. The Royal London Hospital. London. UK. Objective. Patient- and virus-related factors influence the response of patients with chronic hepatitis C to interferon-based therapy.
Avatar f tn The volume of distribution of ribavirin is large (2000 L/kg) and the length of time the drug is trapped varies greatly from tissue to tissue. The mean half-life for multiple doses in the body is about 12 days, but very long-term kinetics are dominated by the kinetics of RBCs (half-life 40 days). RBCs store ribavirin for the lifetime of the cells, releasing it into the body's systems when old cells are degraded in the spleen. http://en.wikipedia.
Avatar m tn the half life of ribavirin is 12 days - Multiple Dose; 120-170 hours - Single Dose. Ribavirin will also stay in your body for up to six months after tx because it is stored in your red blood cells and as the blood cells degrade it is was again released. The only reason we take two doses of ribavirin is because it can cause gastro issues for some.
1431734 tn?1421015271 //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ribavirin so I guess it’s questionable whether that final week of dosing is actually needed. You’ve been struggling with significant skin issues too, so I imagine your doctor is taking that into account as well. Have you specifically asked your doctor about this and shared your concern with him/her?

Avatar m tn Your hep provider is in agreement with Medhelp’s ex resident HCV expert that grapefruit doesn't have interactions with Interferon & Ribavirin, Douglas Dieterich, MD Jun 13, 2008 It actually can increase some drug levels because of inhibiting a liver metabolic enyzme. However neither interferon or ribavirin is metabolized by that particular enzyme(p450) so it is OK to drink your grapefruit juice. http://www.medhelp.
Avatar m tn Had few questions which I would appreciate help with. 1. On the first day of treatment, is it ok to start with sovaldi and ribavirin in the morning and intereferon in the evening? 2. Is paracetamol ok to take for management of flu caused by interferon? Or should it be panadol as my doc said?
Avatar f tn I never thought about asking about a hot tub - raising the body temp. Maybe someone else has that answer. My sides were mostly from the Ribavirin because it can cause anemia. The Sovaldi did contribute to the fatigue, but that wasn't bad until my Hmg dropped into the anemic range. Once off the meds, however, it came back up to the middle of the Normal Range quickly. Good luck, good treating, and go get that Dragon!
1838299 tn?1403496143 If you doc reads the ribavirin package insert directions it says that for anemia the standard protocol is to reduce ribavirin to 600 mg per day if hemoglobin <10 g/dl, first. If < 8.5 g/dL interrupt dose. Then see if hemoglobin level rise. In the clinical trial most patients did rise. Only 4% stopped treatment owing to anemia. 1. The proper protocol is to reduce ribavirin to 600 mg when hemoglobin is less than <10 g/dl.
158241 tn?1237723123 http://tinyurl.com/38cpux (fulltext.pdf) “Combined pegylated interferon and ribavirin has improved chronic hepatitis C (CH-C) therapy, however sustained virologic response is achieved in about half of patients with a 1b genotype infection. We assessed oral ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) on serum biomarkers as a possible treatment for interferon nonresponders.” and see the refferences of the article...
Avatar m tn It's a type of 'time release' that keeps the medicine working longer. There is also an oral medicine that is given with the interferon called ribavirin. Important things to find out are: What is his genotype? This will help determine the length of treatment. How severe is his liver damage? The best way to determine this is by biopsy. HCV is transmitted by blood to blood contact. Your brother is fortunate to have you helping him. Good Luck.

Avatar m tn Don't worry, while on riba you are practically bombproof: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ribavirin - except from anemia-related fatigue.
Avatar n tn //www.pomegreat.com/healthy_living.php http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomegranate i make it apoint to include these two things in my diet. i eat a pomegranate daily, it helps to keep off treatment side effects. i can really feel it in minutes, it gives u a good feeling right after eating it.
Avatar m tn //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemoglobin note the Fe ions coordinated by the heme group. Ribavirin accumulates in Hgb-containing red blood cells and kills them off (hemolytic anemia) which can be remedied by epo ; however Hgb without the trace amount of necessary iron can't do its job. Bill: hope you're surviving the heat; must be getting *very, very* close now. Thanks for that FDA warning link - seems a bit scary.
Avatar m tn //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interferon interferons are a class of proteins naturally produced in response to the detection of virus. They play a fundamental role in the immune response; though they don't directly interact with virus they trigger a wide-raging set of changes that inhibit viral replication and kill infected cells.

I think we were all just too distracted by the war and the country's economy swirling down the toilet to remember a church shooting right about then.
1331115 tn?1536365740 //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telaprevir The brand name is Telaprevir which is an antiviral drug known as protease inhibitor used in tandem with Interferon and Ribavarin to treat Chronic Hepatitis C primarily for people who have Genotypes 1a & 1b. Back in the day it used to be just Interferon and Ribavirin but the success rate was abysmal so a third drug was finally added. The success rate is much higher now. http://en.wikipedia.

Avatar n tn Other Viral Activities Experimental data indicate that ribavirin may have useful activity against many viruses of interest, including avian influenza, hepatitis B, polio, measles and smallpox. Ribavirin is the only known treatment for a variety of Viral hemorrhagic fevers, including Ebola virus, Marburg virus, Lassa fever, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, and Hantavirus infection.
180992 tn?1383377657 Interferon and Ribavirin? Interferon and Ribavirin and a PI? Seriously? I think that Margaret is pushing for the combination without the Riba and Interferon Why do they think they are trials with GS-5885 and other antivirals? It was ready to go, everything had fantastic results, but Gilead is more interested in the money. And I do not buy the idea that they are responsible to their shareholders as they would not exist without us, the patients.
