Common Questions and Answers about Ribavirin uses

Avatar f tn Don't have all the numbers but viral load was 23,000,000 and biopsy showed inflammation and bridging fibrosis, (stage 3?). I'm on week 7 out of first 12, pegasys/1000 ribavirin. Doc won't do comprehensive tests to see if working until week 12, then if responding will do 48 weeks. Blood work showed slight anemia this week, he wants me to cut ribavirin to 600. He did say after checking numbers next week we may look into rescue drugs for the anemia.
26471 tn?1211940121 Peginterferon and Ribavirin Dosing and the Utility of Growth Factors Mitchell L. Shiffman, MD Effect of interferon dosing on virologic response It has long been recognized that the ability of interferon to reduce HCV RNA in serum is a dose-dependent process.
1838299 tn?1403496143 Is anyone on or finshed tx with Sovaldi + ribavirin + interferon for 12 weeks? I am curious about how many people are still treating with interferon cause i will be starting it in October. Plus, how were the side effects and did any SRV? I am tx naive. .
Avatar n tn How important is it to be taking a full ribavirin dosage late in treatment? I am male, 39yrs, 140lb, genotype 1a, in week 34 of peg-intron+riba treatment. I started tx with a viral load of 3,000,000IU/m. Viral load tests were undetectable at 12 and 24 weeks (yay!). However, I have not been tolerating the ribavirin very well - anemia, fatigue, the usual... My starting riba dosage was 800mg/day, but I have been at that dosage for only a total of 8 weeks (out of 34 weeks so far).
Avatar f tn I did the year on Interferon and ribavirin, responded then came out of remission with a vengeance. The depression was unbearable, also the flu like symptoms. When I ended the therapy I had acquired fibromyalgia, hoshimoto's thyroiditis, increased viral count, GI problems, and a new personality!... and not a better one, I have never been able to come off anti-depressants since.
Avatar n tn I understand that Ribavirin is available for the treatment of genetal herpes. Does it cure it? Is it available? Could I request it through a Health Plan such as Kaiser?
4806014 tn?1424505478 Sofosbuvir -- the $11B USD Hired Hand The first component in the cocktail is Sofosbuvir, a compound that interferes with the RNA polymerase that the virus uses to replicate itself. The compound was under development by Princeton, New Jersey Pharmasset, Inc. from 1998 to 2011. In many ways Sofosbuvir is similar to past experimental drugs that essentially mimic a ribonucleotide, selectively stalling the production of viral RNA.
446474 tn?1446351282 I got a call from my hepatologist tonight notifying me that my HCV has returned one month after stopping 48 weeks of Gilead's Sofosbuvir + Ribavirin treatment. I was 1 of 50 of the first cirrhotics to treat using this therapy. "An Open-Label Study to Explore the Clinical Efficacy of Sofosbuvir With Ribavirin Administered Pre-Transplant in Preventing Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Recurrence Post-Transplant" I was undetectable by week two. Continued to be undetectable for 47 weeks.
Avatar n tn It depends on the lab the doctor used, but if he uses QUest , request the Heptimax which is sensitive to 5 IU/mL. In he uses LabCorp, request the Quanta Sure (that is the exact name - no more) which is sensitive to 2 IU/mL. If he has not had a recent CBC - most doctors give orders for CBCs about every 2 weeks in the beginning of treatment to so they can watch these blood counts -- get him one, ASAP.
Avatar m tn 16 Ribavirin The synthetic purine nucleoside Ribavirin rapidly enters eukaryotic cells and after intracellular phosphorylation exhibits virustatic activity against a broad spectrum of DNA and RNA viruses.25 Several studies have been conducted to evaluate ribavirin monotherapy in daily doses of 600-1,200 mg in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C.26-28 While all trials consistently showed a decrease in aminotransferase levels, no virologic end-of-treatment responses were observed.
Avatar n tn I know someone who participated in een drug-test for the combination of peginterferon alfa-2a en ribavirin in 2000. the test was supervised and conducted by a well-reputed clinic and sponsored by Roche Pharma. this person claims she reacted badly and has poly-neuropathy, as a direct result of these injections. does anyone of you have similar stories or facts?
173930 tn?1196341998 I have one very interesting project coming up, fortunately for a producer who always uses me to edit her documentaries, that has no definite air date (it's for PBS, and they're pretty flexible), so I suspect that may be my swan song as a film editor. Then I think I'm going to have to look into semi-retirement or a new career.
Avatar n tn To do this it relies on 'proteases' proteins that cut up other proteins, starting with some human ones, already floating in the cell, and, after the unpacking has started, using a specialized cutting tool of its own to finish the job. The protein it uses to finish the unpacking/cutting is called NS3A - the HCV protease. Now enter telaprevir/boceprevir from stage left (accompanied by a greek chorus of eager investors chanting 'inhibit the protease, inhibit the protease').
5111569 tn?1363757482 It many take a number of years before they are available in Vietnam. Vietnam still uses only Peg-interferon and Ribavirin to treat hepatitis C because of its limited resources. There are two new drugs to choose from. The treatment involves adding one or the other to the drugs you took before. They have been available in the US that are added to the drugs you took (Peg-Interferon and Ribavirin) that are move effective then with just the two drugs.
Avatar m tn I just saw on CNBC, the financial news program a scroll that said something like: "GILD (stock symbol for Gilead) Hep C combo just approved on a compassionate uses basis in Europe" It didn't say which combo was approved and I can't find any other news about this. CNBC will post this sort of news which is considered "material information" that can influence the price of the stock of the company involved so it is usually truthful.
372366 tn?1284407473 Ribavirin was originally designed as a cure for the Flu. It works too. The Company that developed it whose name escapes me ran trials for this but the trials were inconclusive. The Co said the trails that showed it didnt work were flawed. They got into a bun fight with the FDA and lost, went broke and got bought out by someone. It is available in Mexico and several other countries as a cure for the Flu. As are the Riba pro drugs.
158241 tn?1237723123 results from a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial. Kronenberger B et al. AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate whether amantadine reduces deterioration of quality of life in patients with chronic hepatitis C during and after treatment with interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) and ribavirin.
1367233 tn?1316108135 html “…None of the participants took pegylated interferon or ribavirin during RG7128/RG7227 dosing, but did received standard of care therapy using pegylated interferon alfa-2a (Pegasys) plus ribavirin after the initial 2-week dosing period…” Generally, when a patient uses HCV protease inhibitor drugs and relapse, they are left with virus that has mutated and is resistant to the study drug; but if this treatment is ‘mopped up’ with interferon, these mutations are very limited.
Avatar n tn Yes, Procrit works for hemolytic anemia, which is a common side effect of riba. What your doctor says may be technically correct but not very relevant to hep c treatment. There's "hemolysis" and there's ribavirin induced hemolytic anemica. Big difference. Procrit has made a big difference in my treatment. Take it, you'll like it.
4705307 tn?1447973922 7 days x 4 ribavirin pills = 28 pills 28 pills x 48 weeks = 1344 pills 1344 pills / 168 bottle count = 8.0 bottles It just doesn't seem logical to me to have to get 28 more pills from the rx. Therefore my EOT is really closer than I thought, just a thought.
412832 tn?1219078945 2) My doctor prescribed Copegus, but the pharmacy sent generic ribavirin -- he said that was fine... Any feedback to the contrary? 3) Do you have strict ribavirin-taking schedules? I calculated that the doses should be taken 12 hours apart for maximum coverage... Sometimes it's difficult to take at these times because I just don't feel like eating (i.e. take with food...) 4) Which has more pronounced side effects, the interferon or the ribavirin?
215858 tn?1420175156 Sovaldi (sofosbuvir) is direct-acting antiviral (DAA) nucleotide polymerase inhibitor-class drug used in combination antiviral therapy(now. peg-INF and ribavirin in genotype 1 patients) for the treatment of hepatitis C. The hepatitis C virus must attach to and infect liver cells in order to carry out its life cycle and reproduce which is why it can cause liver disease over time.
667735 tn?1253203703 My husband sees Dr. Cecil, and was treated with Pegysus and Ribavirin. He cannot tolerate Ribavirin -- two transfusions later, and doubling up on Procrit. He's a good doctor and answers all questions. He told us last visit that there is no other medication choices until 2012. I don't know why you think he has a magic tx protocol. If he does, I wish he'd tell us about it. I wish you the best!
Avatar m tn Ribavirin is a nucleoside analog. It comes as a pill, capsule or liquid. Ribavirin is taken twice daily, and dosing is based on weight. Although it is not effective against hepatitis C when used alone, ribavirin plays an important role in HCV combination treatment. Although scientists have not discovered exactly how it works, it is clear that adding ribavirin boosts cure rates and reduces the risk of relapse.
Avatar m tn Experts in the field agree that STAT-C drugs combined with pegylated interferon and possibly ribavirin are the future for treating Hepatitis C. Learn more about STAT-C, as well as the three factors limiting interferon treatment. by Nicole Cutler, L.Ac. A new era of medical technology is currently emerging for Hepatitis C treatment. The development of specifically targeted antiviral therapy for Hepatitis C (STAT-C) is rapidly advancing and will revolutionize the way this virus is treated.
Avatar n tn I really believe that failure to reach SVR is often due to reduced doses of interferon and/or ribavirin and perhaps that decreased ribavirin is the more significant of the two because of the frequency of anemia and the inclination to reduce dose. I also believe that extended tx is critical for many type 1s. I cleared and relapsed after 48 weeks of tx though I didn't clear as early as I would have liked and was on 800 mg. ribavirin throughout. The last time I did 1000 mg.
Avatar m tn I'm on ribavirin. I have read on here that lower red cell is a good thing. I've boosted my b-12 dosage, meat, egg yolk, bean, leafy green intake to help keep mine up. am I helping or hurting my recovery by trying to keep red cell count \ up?
Avatar n tn I was talking with my Dr last night about which AD to use during treatment. We went over a list of ones he uses. I asked him about Effexor and he informed me that Effexor was in the catgory of the harder SSRI to withdraw from. Make sure you do a slow taper when it is time to come of of the Effexor. God Bless.
