Avatar m tn Expression of one of these proteins (2’5’ oligo A synthase) results in activation of the second of these proteins (a ribonuclease) which can break down mRNA, and expression of the third protein (a protein kinase) results in inhibition of the initiation step of protein synthesis. These activities target viral protein synthesis, but also result in inhibition of host protein synthesis.
Avatar n tn From: Viral Kinetics in the Treatment of Chronic Hepatitis C Posted 08/30/2006 http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/543530_1 "....A recent study that modeled the impact of ribavirin on IFN therapy has provided further insight into the mechanism of action of ribavirin.[45] This study tested the hypothesis that ribavirin acts by causing lethal mutagenesis to the virus, and the traditional model was, therefore, extended to incorporate a term accounting for these effects.
2030686 tn?1351692148 It is hardly surprising that some of the usual side effects of taking interferon are actually flu-like symptoms. Ribavirin Ribavirin is a synthetic antiviral nucleoside analogue. In the treatment of hepatitis C it works very successfully with interferon but not on its own. It was originally developed as an antiviral agent for diseases that cause respiratory problems. The possibility for it being used in conjunction with interferon was first noted in 1990.
Avatar f tn aspx I really enjoyed the format and it was an easy-to-understand synthesis of many studies from the last few years that are often discussed here. I found slide 24 and 25 interesting but slide 36 very disturbing. I'm not sure if I understood slide 36 correctly but it seemed to say people who only clear at week twelve would also be better off treating for 72 weeks. Did I understand that right? This video is aimed at people unfamiliar with the clinically relevant studies of the last few years.

144210 tn?1273092382 Taper down for 1-2 months at EOT. • Ribavirin 1200mg daily (weight based). Predose for 2 - 4 weeks. • Alinia - Nitazoxanide 500mg BID. Predose for 4 weeks. Ideally Alinia should be taken up to complete Tx end. With 48 weeks this would require 51 weeks worth of Alinia. • SAMe 1600mg BID and TMG 5 grams BID • Insulin Sensitizer such as Metformin. I would be reluctant to consider retreating if I didn't believe the above plan will give me an excellent chance of RVR.
Avatar f tn I was responding to a discussion on the same subject, in which a doctor had responded: http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Hepatitis-C/Hep-C--anabolic-steroids/show/775579 Why it did'nt link to that discussion, I have no idea. Yes, I know about the interferon and the ribavirin, but I have have no idea of what SOC means. Please define your acronyms.
Avatar f tn The whole point of treatment is to whip up the immune system to kill the virus for good. This is what interferon and ribavirin do. Taking steroids will work against this goal. You should avoid them during treatment. And you definitely should inform your doctor about any drugs you take. Some are contraindicated with HCV treatment and others can not be taken by patients with liver problems. Please, talk to your doctor.
Avatar f tn [16] Rosuvastatin is believed to target a compound called geranylgeraniol, which plays a role in the last stages of cholesterol synthesis. It has a long half-life as it is not readily metabolized by the cytochrome P450 system. Furthermore, the drug is considered to be safe in patients with underlying aminotransferase elevation.
Avatar n tn We critically reviewed the studies, depending on the methodologies (case reports, clinical reports, randomized studies), and assessed the pertinence of "dopamine-dependent" SSRI-related side effects. The analytic review of these articles suggests that some specific SSRI-related side effects be classified as dopamine-dependent. CONCLUSIONS: At a clinical level, it could be useful to underline dopamine-dependent characteristics of some SSRI-related side effects.
Avatar m tn 5 hepatoma cells. These cells express CYP27B1, the gene encoding for the enzyme responsible for the synthesis of the vitamin-D hormonally active metabolite, calcitriol. Treatment with vitamin-D(3) resulted in calcitriol production and induction of calcitriol target gene CYP24A1, indicating that these cells contain the full machinery for vitamin-D metabolism and activity. Notably, treatment with calcitriol resulted in HCV inhibition.

238010 tn?1420409872 I've read that fat can help with ribavirin absorption. But I just read in another post that cheese and peanut butter (among other things) may contribute to higher ammonia levels, which in turn may cause brain fog. Any suggestions on what fats to take with riba, both in the morning and evening? And how much fat is necessary each time?
419309 tn?1326506891 At week 68 of treatment, we got the call that my husband's AFP had risen to 128: the nurse was very concerned. Well, he had his CT-Scan Tuesday, and the doc says, at least for now, he's in the clear :) ... no clearly defined liver tumor. It was a tremendous relief, but the lead doc in the clinic came in and said that he was very concerned about future recurrence of hcc in my husband.
233616 tn?1312790796 Flockhart’s charts are simple inhibitors, and they will not compete for room to be metabolized by the available cytochromes, they will instead enhance or Induce a stronger response and more enzyme activity. Whenever a drug or food stimulates the synthesis of more enzyme protein,9 enhancing the enzyme's metabolizing capacity, it is known as an inducer.
158241 tn?1237723123 http://tinyurl.com/6759rg The ribavirin bioavailability of ribavirin can differ between two persons, even if they have the same height and bodyweight. Hence it just seems to be consequent to individualise the therapy more and more and to adapt the ribavirin DOSIS dependent on the individual CONCENTRATION. I predict a routine testing of riba-concentrations and individualised variation of dosis in a few years.
179856 tn?1333550962 Just a pure guess, but maybe your immune system hasn't gotten used to flying solo yet without the drugs constantly contributing. Both interferon and ribavirin are immunostimulants and being that you took them for so long, it may take your body awhile to "re-learn" how to properly regulate its own immune response to foreign pathogens again. The body normally produces its own interferon and uses it to fight infections.

1815939 tn?1377995399 [15, 16] Treating the underlying HCV infection has not only been shown to clear the virus successfully but also in preventing or limiting renal damage.[15] Dual therapy with interferon and ribavirin has been shown to reduce viral load, as well as reduce proteinuria but has mixed success in improving glomerular filtration and creatinine levels, but studies have consistently shown that commencing antiviral therapy stabilises renal function.
1225178 tn?1318984204 Technically and according to the medical community interferon = immunotherapy Ribavirin = antiviral therapy As stated on the the thread below, there is a huge difference between chemotherapy and immuno/antiviral therapy. How any one chooses to define their treatment is strictly up to them but there are distinct differences with chemo therapy being horrific for all who undergo it. Trinity http://www.medhelp.
Avatar f tn In fact, cholesterol is so important that it is manufactured by the glial cells in the supportive tissues of the brain. Curbing synthesis of such a crucial compound has an inevitable downside. Suicide and violent behavior have long been linked to very low cholesterol levels.
233616 tn?1312790796 MB: understand that pregnacy is OUT of the question for treaters, and for some while afterwards due to all the RNA damage, but does this hold equally true for the rest of us as it relates to how much of, and whether to consider a medication. ---------------- The only reason pregnancy is "out of the question" for treaters (or for six months after) is because ribavirin is tetragenic, i.e can cause birth defects. Forgive me if that is what you're implying but I didn't pick that up.
213141 tn?1270665712 · 2006 - The Journal of Translational Medicine published a Turkish study whose aim was to determine oxidant/antioxidant status of patients with chronic Hepatitis C and the effect of combination therapy (pegylated interferon alfa-2b plus ribavirin) on oxidative stress. Researchers reported that patients with chronic HCV infection are under the influence of oxidative stress associated with lower levels of antioxidant enzymes.
Avatar n tn 283 got an average reduction in vl of 2.77 logs at week 12 when used with interferon and ribavirin. 950 does not have 12 week data yet, but used ALONE, it got 4.4 logs in 2 weeks AT TID (best dose group). Using TID, 950 is shown to have over 150 times greater potency in vl reduction in 1/6 the time. Expert consensus at AASLD was that EVR and RVR are important indicators of SVR. Early evidence is that 950 is definitely the more potent of the 2.
Avatar f tn Insulin-Resistance (IR) has been previously shown to impair sustained virological response (SVR) rate in chronic hepatitis (CHC) patients infected with genotype 1 when treated with pegylated interferon and ribavirin. The aim of this study was to assess the independent impact of IR after adjustment to major predictors of SVR, particularly HCV genotype and liver fibrosis stage.
Avatar f tn But, if he doesn't take the diabetes stuff reliably he might not have the discipline to take the interferon/ribavirin regularly which is an absolute MUST. Hubby is in a pickle. Sorry you have to be a spectator to it all.
Avatar m tn Abstract In immune-competent patients, higher vitamin D levels predicted sustained viral response (SVR) following interferon (INF) and ribavirin therapy for chronic hepatitis C. This study aimed to verify the influence of vitamin D serum levels and/or vitamin D supplementation in predicting SVR rates for recurrent hepatitis C (RHC). Forty-two consecutive patients were treated for RHC with combination therapy with INF-α and ribavirin for 48 weeks.
