Common Questions and Answers about Ribavirin patent

Avatar n tn I began treatment about a month ago. My first prescription for ribavirin was filled with non-generic Rebetol at a cost of $1,100 for quantity of 120. This month I filled my second prescription for ribavirin. This prescription was filled with generic Rebetol at a cost of $90 for the same quantity. This was a very pleasant surprise. Can anyone comment on the efficacy of the generic vs the non-generic ribavirin?
233616 tn?1312790796 In comparison with corresponding plasma values of ribavirin following a high-purine meal, Cmax, AUC0-144 and AUC0-∞ of ribavirin following a low-purine meal were 136% (90% confidence internal [CI]: 120%-155%), 134% (90% CI: 118%-153%), and 139% (90% CI: 120%-159%), respectively. This study indicates that dietary purines have an effect on ribavirin absorption. Dosage regimens of ribavirin might need to be adjusted according to the purine content of the meal.
Avatar m tn strator, wondering if you could you post some more info on the company that is making that less expensive Ribavirin? I am being dispensed my third version of ribavirin in as many months. They started with Copegus, switched to Ribasphere after Copegus went "off patent" because of my insurance's co-pay caps on branded vs. generic drugs. I would have had to pay $280/mo to continue with Copegus.

Avatar n tn THe exact contents depends on your specific ribavirin dosage. It is much cheaper than, and equally effective as, Copegus. There is no generic equivalent of PegIntron or Pegasys.
Avatar m tn I just realized that the Ribavirin I take is generic (mad by TEVA) Is there a difference between this and the "real" one? Should I ask the pharmacy to refill with the brand name next time, instead of the generic one?
Avatar f tn The only treats that will be available next year are for genotype 2/3 (Sofosbuvie + Ribavirin) and treatment naive genotypes 1, 4, 5, 6 combined with peg-interferon and Ribavirin. Have you tried current treatment (peg-interferon and Ribavirin) and failed to cure the virus? Good luck to you!
Avatar m tn I was informed that I will be starting the Sofosbuvir/Ribavirin 12 week course (I'm genotype 2) beginning around mid-January. I have my first appointment Jan 6 to get baseline bloodwork done. There seemed to be no issue of IF or WHEN sofosbuvir will be approved. So it seems my waiting will soon be over!
Avatar f tn “ We believe that INX-189 offers the possibility of more potency against hepatitis, more rapid action in the liver, and fewer side effects than existing treatments ” Professor Chris McGuigan, Welsh School of Pharmacy The current treatment involves two drugs - ribavirin and interferon, which has to be given as an injection. Side effects are often severe and lead to patients failing to complete the treatment.
Avatar n tn You don't mention that she took ribavirin pills too, you only state she took peg-intron. Hopefully she took ribavirin pills along with the peg-intron, because taking both interferon and ribavirin together greatly improves her chances of being cured. 3. Did your mom have a liver biopsy? 131114 tn?1380086790 It remains to be seen how well sofosbuvir/GS-5885 without ribavirin works, or whether sofosbuvir/daclatasvir (with or without ribavirin) works for prior non-responders.
Avatar m tn Thanks 4est. But I am not able to open the link. If what you are saying is true than I think its safer to stick with Pegasys for the time being.
232778 tn?1217450711 The reason being, unlike when Ribavirin came along (with next to know cost, as it was a generic), many patients have already cleared on SOC, so why automatically fund something when a cheaper alternative may work for that patient with less side effects?
Avatar m tn But it was only through a genome-wide association study that the Duke team was able to show that these same variants were protective against anemia induced by ribavirin, one of two necessary drugs in hepatitis C treatment.
Avatar m tn I found online an interesting patent application. It is trying to patent the useage of high dose Methylene Blue as a cure for Hepatitis C. The application reports results from a very small number of cases and recommends a twice daily dose on 65 mg (130 mg total) of Methylene Blue. Expectation is that it is a two month treatment. I have not found any reports of harm from taking this high of a dose of Methylene blue, but I'm not a researcher and might not entirely understand what I'm reading.
Avatar f tn At about the same time there were lawsuits over ribavirin with SP and ICN (the patent holder and manufacturer of all the ribavirin in the first world back then) claiming it was a "bundle" they tested in trials, not two different drugs or something like that. Roche sued. At the same time one of ICN's production facilities was shut down for violating purity standards.
Avatar m tn Peginterferon alfa-2a/ribavirin had lower incidences of depression and flu-like symptoms than standard interferon/ribavirin, whereas peginterferon alfa-2b/ribavirin and standard interferon/ribavirin had similar incidences of these AEs.

Avatar m tn By the time oral ribavirin was finally approved by the FDA as part of a combination treatment (with interferon) for hepatitis C in 1998, the original ICN patents on ribavirin itself had expired, and (notwithstanding subsequent patent disputes) ribavirin had become essentially a generic drug..." http://www.news-medical.net/health/Ribavirin-History.

Avatar m tn Haven't digested it fully, but it appears to be yet another study suggesting that while dosing ribavirin by weight (weight based) is better than a flat dose -- weight based dosing is still crude compared to what the author's speculate might be finer tuned dosing such as serum riba levels which appear to relate to the degree of anemia. So...

Avatar n tn I got the old. I did the trial because it was easy to do. Pegintron w/ the protease inhibitor and no Ribavirin. The actual trial was 5 weeks w/ 20 week maintenance. So it's 6 months of this combo. No placebo and not blind. It's MUCH better without the riba and I will NEVER put another anti depressant in my body again, EVER, which makes it easier still. Plus it paid 700 bucks for the 5 weeks and a few hundred more for the 20 maintenance. I was going to hold out for an attractive Vertex trial.

Avatar m tn Life on the coast. How do people react to severe sun and heat while on Interferon and Ribavirin? What type of difficulties do folks face? Your story, information and suggestions welcome.
Avatar f tn You odds are extremely low. Hep c infected blood must enter your blood stream. It is transmitted by blood to blood contact. For example a medical worker who experiences an accidental needlestick involving a patient with known hepatitis C their odds of transmission are only about 1.8% So obviously your odds would be all the more lower to practically nonexistent. There have been no known incidents of contracting hep c in the manner you have described.
