Ribavirin half life

Common Questions and Answers about Ribavirin half life

Avatar n tn Ribavirin has a longer half life than interferon. The levels for both gradually come down to zero over time. It is a few weeks with interferon and a few months with ribavirin.
476246 tn?1418874514 Riba has a very long half life so with the normal doses were talking about, so the timing of your riba is not that critical, as long as you get the correct dose down the hatch every day -- at least according to my treatment team. Riba also absorbs better with food that has a decent fat content, so I took my riba with my two (and only) meals, breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was sometime between 10AM and 12 Noon, and dinner usually between 4-6PM.
1084115 tn?1385232189 The mean half-life for multiple doses in the body is about 12 days, but very long-term kinetics are dominated by the kinetics of RBCs (half-life 40 days). RBCs store ribavirin for the lifetime of the cells, releasing it into the body's systems when old cells are degraded in the spleen.
Avatar m tn Rocker's right. Ribavirin has a very long half life. From "Ribavirin Official FDA information"..... "Ribavirin has a multiple dose half-life of 12 days, and it may persist in non-plasma compartments for as long as 6 months." http://www.drugs.com/pro/ribavirin.
Avatar f tn 3 Pharmacokinetics The terminal half-life of ribavirin following administration of a single oral dose of ribavirin is about 120 to 170 hours. The total apparent clearance following administration of a single oral dose of ribavirin is about 26 L/h. There is extensive accumulation of ribavirin after multiple dosing (twice daily) such that the Cmax at steady state was four-fold higher than that of a single dose. http://kadmon.com/files/ribasphere-tablets-pi.
Avatar m tn The volume of distribution of ribavirin is large (2000 L/kg) and the length of time the drug is trapped varies greatly from tissue to tissue. The mean half-life for multiple doses in the body is about 12 days, but very long-term kinetics are dominated by the kinetics of RBCs (half-life 40 days). RBCs store ribavirin for the lifetime of the cells, releasing it into the body's systems when old cells are degraded in the spleen.
3093770 tn?1389742726 It is not necessary to take ribavirin at the same time or at a specific time as it is with Incivek due to ribavirin's long half life. The rule of thumb for dosing ribavirin is usually 12 hrs apart but taking it with your evening meal is fine plus the fat grams will help with absorbency. If you choose to take it at 10 pm and it does not interfere with your sleep than stick with it because that's what works for you.
315737 tn?1407302597 Trust me only forgetting 4 Riba over that long of time is nothing. Many of us here have done the same thing. Riba has a long half life so your ok. Really it is not anything to worry about. Wishing you the very best going forward and SVR.
Avatar f tn In addition, effective contraception should be utilized for 6 months post-therapy based on a multiple-dose half-life (t1/2) of ribavirin of 12 days. Male patients and their female partners must practice effective contraception (two reliable forms) during treatment with ribavirin and for the 6 months post-therapy period (e.g., 15 half-lives for ribavirin clearance from the body).
315737 tn?1407302597 Have you had a CBC to see if your HGB is low? You may have anemia which is common after a few weeks of tx. You can get procrit to help, if this is the case. Look at those labs and ask your Dr.
1205205 tn?1272398083 Hi All- I know this may sound dumb, but my niece threw my bottle of Ribavirin Capsules against the wall (She was mad at her mom- and grabbed the first thing in sight- which happened to be my brand new bottle). I opened the bottle immediately after to see if there was any damage. All the capsules seem intact, however, would there be any damage to the medicine itself? I looked it up online, and they said never to "open, break, or chew on capsules.
Avatar n tn as long as the virus was in my blood I had a hard time enjoying life, now, life challenges are easier to handle, go figure. Maybe your depression will lift once the virus is gone?
2030686 tn?1351692148 Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store ribavirin tablets and capsules at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Store ribavirin oral solution in the refrigerator or at room temperature. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.
Avatar m tn Ribavirin is taken twice a day, for you 3 morning and 3 evening (or night) The time is not so important except to take you when you will remember because the half life is very long. Sometimes people feel restless from ribavirin and the doctor will instruct them to take the second dose early evening or late afternoon.
Avatar f tn Dkus, I really, REALLY did not want to take the ribavirin but I'm 2 and a half days from finishing and it's been so much easier than I ever imagined. You can do this. It really is like jumping into a pool. Get it done!
Avatar m tn Between riba's long half life -- and only an incremental decrease that has not even been shown to be clinically significant--no problem. On the other hand, I'm talking about taking antacids every day. And even w/o clinical studies, my gut tells me less riba will enter my system if I'm not prudent.
223152 tn?1346981971 Based on the fact that interferon monotherapy is not effective, it's effective with ribavirin, and at full strength, I would rather have my ribavirin working at full strength when I start my interferon than have it take awhile after my interferon to get to full strength. There IS data on the amount of time it takes for ribavirin to get to full concentration AND there is data on the efficacy of ribavirin together with interferon.
Avatar n tn Normally, I would take psyllium in the morning to offset this, but I'm wondering if that or the calcium that I also take in the am might keep the Ribavirin from being absorbed? This is an extremely helpful forum, and I'm glad I found it! I'm female, 64, 1b, Stage 1 and on treatment now mainly because of age and my insurance running out in June.
Avatar n tn I have the kind of HCV positive(chronic) that does not respond so wellto interferon treatments. I have choosen to try this Interferon-Ribavirin therapy regardless with hopes of getting better. I start this therapy soon after the new year.I live in Bend,Oregon and feel I need to attend a support group either for Interferon-Ribavirin therapy users or HCV positive(chronic) patients. Do you know if there are support groups in my area????
314554 tn?1337457719 2) Whereas, due to it's shorter and linear-chain PEG, Peg Intron has a half-life of 30-50 hours. (Note that NPIA or non-pegylated interferon alfa has a half-life of only 3-5 hours.) 3) …multiple-dose ribavirin half-life (298 hours) is considerably longer than the single-dose half-life (79 hours) Questions: #1 What extent does RIBA prolong the half-life of the Pegasys and the Peg Intron? #2 Am I phrasing the question right? Is this how it works?
233616 tn?1312790796 This was unexpected given the reported half-life of ribavirin of 120 to 170 hours. This retention of ribavirin may reflect a much deeper compartment for ribavirin with the terminal half-life longer than previously reported. An empirical estimate of the ribavirin half-life in this study-based on the last 3 time points, including the predose value for period 2-yielded half-lives ranging between 209 and 550 hours.
135456 tn?1301441224 This suggests that ribavirin shortens the half-life of infected cells during IFN administration, allowing their complete elimination during the standard 48-week treatment period in the majority of patients who initially respond to combination therrapy" the shortened half-life for infected cells being consistent with HR's CTL epitope theory and "High ribavirin concentrations in serum were achieved within a few hours after the first oral intake, but the levels fluctuated during the f
13100769 tn?1445372717 I'm always searching for results from others with the same as me but I don't see much. I have 8 more weeks to go from a 24 week treatment of Ribavirin and Sovaldi. I'm praying for the best but could use some support. Thank you for reading.
238417 tn?1203711010 ) We don't hear from those folks - because generally they aren't freaked out by their symptoms --- and they are understanding that they'd be tired. But that life is going good enough for them. Anxiety however - XANAX --- lorazepam for me. I use Emergen-C stuff for keeping awake --- after a pot of coffee does nothing. LOL! And the weird thing --- I don't think I was asymptomatic...

Avatar f tn In addition, Ribavirin has a multiple dose half-life of 12 days, and it may persist in non-plasma compartments for as long as 6 months. Therefore, Ribavirin, including Ribavirin tablets, is contraindicated in women who are pregnant and in the male partners of women who are pregnant. Extreme care must be taken to avoid pregnancy during therapy and for 6 months after completion of therapy in both female patients and in female partners of male patients who are taking Ribavirin therapy.
Avatar f tn Every drug has a half-life, meaning a drug like ribavirin has a multiple dose half life of 12-15 days. Every 12-15 days half the drug remaining is gone. So, it takes 6 months for the drug to be removed completely. Taking a drug multiple times in a day keeps the blood levels at a certain therapeutic level. While the newer drugs do have some impact on the immune system, they clearly are not as horrific as interferon, especially when combined with ribavirin.
Avatar n tn …and yesterday evening I took my last two, seven days after my last shot. ________________________________________________ Dear Ribavirin, You’re a clever Old Scratch, you know that. You hide out in the background, letting Interferon get all the grief and bad press for making treatment such a pain, but you yourself are the one who brings on the most of it. Yeah, you.
Avatar f tn I take ribavirin twice a day. I just cannot remember if I took tonight's dose or not. Is it better to: 1. take a dose (which may mean I had a double dose), or 2. just assume I did take it (which may mean I totally miss a dose). Main anxiety is I have VERY low platelet count and am monitored weekly to ensure it doesn't drop at all (it's borderline). And I THINK that part of what the ribavirin does is to counteract the interferon's thinning of the blood. It is 10.
9364515 tn?1403330662 All of my other treatments (except one clinical trial I was in that didn't include Ribavirin)- I was on the Interferon and Ribavirin. I have more side effects from antidepressants than I do from being depressed, so for me, I do better w/o them. I am a firm believer with exercise. It helps alot of things including depression. Exercise doesn't have to be the same cookie cutter work-out routine for every person. Some people may prefer to swim. Others may enjoy walking outside.
