Avatar n tn I gave a comment here and the post shows I commented but I don't see it. Maybe it will show up some day but the website seems to be having a host of problems. Basically, carbs aren't all created equal, and calories are not your best source of tracking weight. Calories are one factor, but how well and how quickly you metabolize your food into sugar for energy is more determinative, as foods that turn quickly into sugar have to be burned off quickly or they store quickly as fat.
Avatar f tn Did this person tell you to cut all carbs, or just simple carbs? Vegetables are carbs. Fruit are carbs. Whole grains are carbs. Beans are a combination of protein and carbs. I think what most would advise is to avoid white flour, bagels, sweets, anything that turns to sugar quickly in your system. That's why you're craving sugar -- carbs are necessary for energy, and sugar is quick energy but also stores as fat if not burned immediately. Same with processed carbs.
Avatar m tn My weight stabilized by filling up on whole grain rice, quinoa, millet, or whatever. I went full psychotic still on Lithium, so not sure if that method would work long term or for you. Good luck.
Avatar f tn Stay away from heavily processed starches (pastas, cereals, breads) and get your carbs from healthy sources like sweet potatoes, spinach, peppers, and other vegetables. A white rice or quinoa would be alright in small amounts and in moderation. (I know people will rail against white rice but whole grain or brown rice contain too much anti-nutrients and can cause leaky gut syndrome) Make sure to eat those starches with protein and fat to help reduce the spikes of glucose.

As to the argument against multi-grain foods, some believe that eating too many different foods at one meal present a problem for the digestive system. This can get extremely involved and is called food combining, and the belief is that the digestive system can't do several things at once. I have no idea if this is true or not.
Avatar f tn Brown rice is a carb. Quinoa is a carb. Or mostly, because grains and seeds also contain protein. Beans are a great source of protein, but also contain fiber and other carbs. So carbs aren't the enemy, simple carbs are, when you're trying to lose weight. Most of our diets are going to be carbs unless we forgo antioxidants or go overboard on protein -- not all of us are suited to eat like an Inuit. And we live longer because we have carbs.
Avatar f tn s better to avoid wheat most of the time, so explore grains such as brown rice, whole oats, whole spelt, kamut, teff, millet, quinoa, amaranth, etc. Eating more protein and fewer simple carbs are good. White beans, such as white kidney beans, chicpeas, aduzi beans, and other beans are good because they're high in protein and also in fibers that help control blood sugar and cholesterol. That's a start. To get more complete, try to find a holistic nutritionist.
Avatar f tn Other grains to look for are quinoa (there are three colors of quinoa available), amaranth, buckwheat (not related to wheat at all) and hulled millet. Yes, millet is what birds eat, but the hulled millet found in the bulk foods department is meant for human consumption. If you can find a clean source that isn't too dusty, millet is good, too. I have found quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) to be very clean, plus it is higher in protein than the other grains. And, it's not from a grass.

If you take 250 mg at each meal that is 750 mg a day, the limit is 2400mg a day so you have room to go up on the Met. It can take 6 to 8 weeks for met to become fully effective.

Avatar f tn pumpkin/sunflower seeds/nuts etc. Eat plenty of protein, complex carbs, vegetables/fruits/salads etc. You must eat something last thing at night within an hour of going to bed and must eat something within 30 mins of waking up. I am no longer falling asleep and the muscle pain is starting to lessen. I knew I was making progress when I could actually do something like wash the dishes or do some ironing in the afternoon/evening.
Avatar m tn s not exactly healthy but it will work. Or try 1 serving of carbs (oatmeal, sweet potato, brown rice, quinoa) every other day. Chicken, turkey, fish, steak once in a while, broccoli, egg whites. The rest of the time. Eat small amounts 4-6 times a day. Lots of water. No Dairy no alcohol. Google fitness competition diets. Lots of low impact cardio. Try spin class. I weight 165 lbs and burn 700 calories in 45 minutes at flywheel.
Avatar m tn You can add a sweetener to it or just add the quinoa to salads, soups, regular rice, and yogurt, etc to have the benefit of quinoa plus it will not be bland. Quinoa is a 'grain' consisting of 8 essential amino acids (protein) which is the same as milk, plus it is gluten free (wheat -free). It is a great protein source for people who do not eat meat and it can be eaten in different methods as I stated above.

Pre-pregnancy I was a 3 BM/day because I eat a very clean diet. Some pregnancy... It reduce to 1/day if lucky. I made my quinoa... 2-4 times a day! I have also been having aversions with preparing meat so this met both of my needs.

Avatar n tn Ch4st4r had some good suggestions... also adding protein and healthy fats from olive or coconut oil to each meal will help as well, since protein and fats, won't increase blood glucose levels like simple carbs will. I lost 23 lbs by add more healthful fats to my diet...
Avatar f tn s nearly impossible with 2000 mg of sodium limit daily. I hit the protein shake w/ chick pea n hemp protein. The whey protein made me tired. Too much bad protein can bring on HE. You'll find your balance where you can feel good. Lots of protein bars and dry cereals have high protein and I consume a lot of those!
