Common Questions and Answers about Prozac and cats

prozac

Avatar m tn Hello everyone! My 6 years old cat started to spray one year ago and was placed on Prozac. She stopped spraying for a few months, which made us very happy, but then she started spraying again. She is an indoor-only cat, but each evening I put her on a harness to play in the backyard for 1 hour while I garden. Recently, she cries to go out all the time and when I don't let her, she sprays - sometimes in three places.
Avatar n tn She is the weirdest animal I have ever had. When we first got her she wouldn't stop following me and meow and follow me and meow. She was snuggly though and I like that. So I took her to the vet and he put her on the prozac for separation anxiety. Now she only comes downstair when I come home and she wants to be fed and when my husband tries to feed her she wont eat until I come home. She does unrinate alot when she does go to the bathroom but its not as frequent before the prozac.
Avatar f tn I took Prozac 20mg for 12 years, started out OK, it gave me lots of energy, I couldn't stop talking and I am a quiet person. Reasons for taking it soon resolved themselves, but I kept taking the meds, big mistake!! I noticed I was always hot when others were not, I would sweat even with moderate activity, never wore a jacket no matter how cold. My vision began to get worse, had to have glasses for reading and driving, I began to have hearing problems, turn the TV up more and more.
Avatar m tn Now if your Himalayan has been this way with other cats, males, well I would say he needs a chill pill. Maybe some Prozac to mellow the guy out. Perhaps you should take him to your vets to have a med check. He may be ill!
Avatar f tn hi Kim and welcome, I can't find any info on long term use of prozac on cats...but for your information prozac use in people can cause an upper GI bleed/hemorrhage. If I were you I'd take this very seriously.....kitty really needs to see a Vet asap. as far as the Lysine treatment goes, that is perfectly fine to use long term...but does depend on the dosage and the brand you are using...must be free of all soy, salt, sugar, preservatives among other icky ingredients to be safe for cats.
Avatar f tn with the door closed, and keep transfering items from that space to and from the space where the other cats are. this way they get accustomed to the others scent. this is going to take awhile...so yeah thankfully you do have a spare bathroom!!! I know what that is like, when I took in the little abandon kitten last fall, I kept her in my main bath for two weeks, I put an old screen door up so my boys could see her and her them...
Avatar n tn s Jing Tang Herbal Company by prescription from your veterinarian. There are also non-herbal medications such as Prozac and Paxil and others that work very effectively for cat's if the herbals and Feliway are ineffective. Lastly, behavioral modification under the help of your veterinarian would also help.
Avatar f tn copy and paste the following it explains exactly what struvite urinary crystals are....and like I said this is very common in male cats and commonly the reason they pee outside the litter box.....but DO NOT use the dry food that is recommended on that page, what you need to do is feed a canned wet food to your kitty.....this problem is caused by a state of dehydration and feeding any source of dry food will only make the problem worse.
Avatar f tn When I was taking Prozac I didnt gain weight.Paxcel made me gain some though.
Avatar n tn I am able to live with my attacks (which can get really bad at times) and I actually have a fear of taking meds. I think the only thing I will take is a child's dose of tylenol only when I have a fever or migrane. I have discovered that taking Vitamin B Complex capsules have helped reduce my stress and anxiety levels. Also, I still love taking Flinstone vitamins, on top of the vit B complex. I feel great when I don't miss out in taking one a day.
Avatar m tn ve locked Britney up in another room and he calms down, but he guards that door and wants in. When we go in and out he goes crazy again and tries to tear us up. Its been a week now and we're living trapped in the house. Vet prescribed Prozac yesterday but we've not been able to get him to eat it. We can only tie this to the rabies shot. Ever heard of it before? Should it go away? This is horrible for us right now.
Avatar f tn The Dr said this would go away once the prozac fully kicked in , but its been a month and nothing. I know the prozac is helping but i have ups and downs all day. If I sit at home by myself for an hr or two i will feel depression and or anxiety. I guess my question is..... do you think that I should request a higher mg of prozac (20) or keep giving the 10mg pills a try? I hate having to try so hard to not feel depressed.
Avatar f tn Hi i'm on Prozac and trazodone if you start on a low dose of trazodone it shouldn't be an issue and there really is no interaction with trazodone and Prozac because I've been on trazodone and Prozac for years and I've never had a problem you just have to take it like maybe you're better off just taking half a tablet or something
Avatar f tn We call these "ADR" cats. ADR stands for "aint doing right". In other words, they are still eating and drinking, no significant vomting etc., they just "aint doing right". Diagnosing the cause is a challenge but requires a physical exam and lab tests (urine and blood work). If these tests are normal then depression can be the diagnosis and we will prescribe anti-depressents. Sometimes even prozac.
Avatar f tn It was a concerted effort with me, doctors, therapists, friends, and people who just cared and knew me, plus a few dogs, cats and backyard animal visitors who gave me "animal therapy." I was surprised when my psychiatrist said he didn't think I needed all the meds I was on, so he started to take them off one by one.
Avatar f tn First of all, you shouldn't just stop taking antidepressants without discussing it with your doctor. Fortunately, you weren't on the Prozac long enough and you were at a very low dose, so you didn't experience the nasty effects of going cold turkey off these types of meds. Prozac can take anywhere from 4-6 weeks to reach "steady state" in your body. That is the point at which it will begin to help you.
Avatar f tn I have been on and off prozac for 4 years and i now am experiencing heartburn. I take 20mg at night because it makes me dizzy but i dont get the heartburn until the afternoon the next day. I was wondering is it safe to take ranitidine 150mg effervescent? I took it all the time when needed before being back on prozac and it works i was wondering does it cause any side affect?
Avatar f tn Hi Elaine, Hi Elaine, I posted in the other forum (pregnancy) about being put on prozac 10 mg. I have taken your great advice and am doing yoga and breathing exercises to deal with my mild anxiety instead. But heres my question to put my mind at ease. I took the prozac at 28 weeks for about a week. It wasnt right for me and I was too worried I was doing harm to the baby. After my 3 miscarriages last year I am always worried now.
Avatar f tn got a new dr in may cause old one retired he had me try to up prozac and trouble with that so his asso. had me totally stop the prozac and go on wellbutrin sr 150am and pm,,,,after a week i was having prozac withdrawals so back on prozac i went and still on wellbutrin to be honest i dont know if my depression is something else cause neither brought me up or were stimulating..my new dt thinks i have slight add..anywayas i have been tapering off the prozac 10 mg a week per dr...
Avatar f tn yesterday I went dr for anxiety and not sleeping at night. told her about my husband had been on Xanax for about 3 yrs and I have no in, so when my sleeplessness started , and anxiety I took one of his Xanax at times and some times I would have to take 2mg so she put me on 10 mg of prazac and 1mg of Xanax . my question is I scared to death of the anti-depressant because I have heard good people doing bad things on them I told her I was afraid of them but she insisted I take both.
517130 tn?1223039824 Nervousness, insomnia, ANXIETY, tremor, agitation, headaches............the list of side effects of Prozac is quite extensive. You say you've just started taking them, so you have anywhere from 1-4 weeks for it to reach it's therapeutic level. During that time you should expect to feel like you're still on that emotional roller coaster, but you should also begin to gradually feel a lessening of that turmoil. Your doctor was remiss in not telling you to avoid alcohol.
Avatar f tn I was terrified to take anything else, but eventually gave in to Prozac. Slowly, but surely, I recovered and am now better than I had been in years. I've been taking Prozac since 2003 and am able to manage my dose based on how I'm feeling. Medication like Ativan can actually make some people worse and that's what happened to me. I believe it depressed my central nervous system so that I was a perfect candidate to experience clinical depression.
Avatar m tn what does potassium have to do with it? .... I am open here to any and all thinking and ideas ... how long sis on Prozac? ... what has improved? .. no side effects noticed by her? as always THANKS everyone and God Bless!!!!!
