I am wondering if long term protonix use has been linked to joint and muscle pain as well as hearing loss. I have been taking proton pump inhibitors for 18 years and have just begun hearing about bone loss and other issues. I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia after finally seeing a doctor about the pain that I have endured for over 10 years.
I had an MRI on my neck last year and there were 3 disc showing deteriation. I had been having stiffness and pain in my neck, with pain radiating to the back of my head. I don't have pain all the time, sometimes I go for days without any discomfort. Sometimes it is so uncomfortable that I can't get comfortable. I take anti-inflammatory drugs when I need them, and apply heat to the area at times.
The Dr gave me Nexium, but I was still getting upper stomach pain and pressure in the chest an back. I was switched to Protonix and it seemed to help with the upper stomach pain right under the breastbone. I'm taking two pills a day. Does anyone know how long Protonix takes to work? I was told that some PPI's could take 4 to six weeks to take affect.

I am so overwhelmed with GERD! Currently I am on Nexium twice a day plus Maalox and still have symtpoms. My throat and nose are burning. My stomach is upset and can't seem to eat anything! I have been reflux problems for about 4 years now and it has NEVER been this bad. Sometimes food seems to be stuck in my throat/chest. On top of all theses symptoms I am extremely tired and have joint pain.
Since, I have had sever joint cracking noises all over my body. Additionally I had a herniated disc in my neck in which I had to get surgery (fusion C5-C7). Could the Nexium be causing these conditions? All MD's I spoke to said "no way". I am not convinced. I have weaned from 40 mgs to 20 mgs per day. I have stretched it to 36 hr intervals, sometimes successfully sometimes not. I would love to get off Nexium but it is extremely difficult.
Anyone out there on Protonix? I was diagnosed with acid reflux and was put on Nexium which helped slightly with my burping but I was still getting stomach aches. I went for an abdominal ultrasound, endescopy and CT scan with IV contrast and all came back fine. My Dr just switched me to Protonix.
ve been having severe stomach pain and now my GI doctor thinks it is from the Protonix, which it probably is. His solution is to take me off of the protonix completely. He told me to go cold turkey off of it, but I am having such bad heartburn that I think I'm going to taper it. Shouldn't it be tapered anyways since going off of that much PPI would cause your stomach to over produce acid? Anyone have any ideas?
If the pain is in upper back then it can be due to inflammation of the lining of lung. It can also be due to pain at the joint between ribs and back. Muscle pull is another possibility. If the pain is in lower back then it can be a muscle pull, a kidney stone, referred pain of appendicitis or colitis. It could be any other condition as well. I recently was changed from prilisec to protonix which greatly relieved the laryngeal irritation from silent gerd. Two nights past week have awakened with severe nerve pain entire left thorax (front & back between shoulder blades) and left arm/hand. Ironically no substernal chest pain. Echo and persantine tests normal 3 months ago (done to evaluate for PH/copd) It was 9/10 and 10/10 severity nerve pain, not muscle, no brash, no acid in throat, etc. It lasted less than 10 minutes.
gave me Protonix because I was experiencing some acid reflux...I took Protonix for 2 weeks (1 per day at 40mg) .. I have been having very bad side effects... Naseous, dizzy, increased anxiety, palpitations, gagging, insomnia, rapid heart beat. I thought I was dying. I called my Dr and he blew me off saying he never heard of such side effects and that I am getting anxious maybe I should see a therapist. I have no history of bad anxiety and racing heart like this..
My Internal Medicine doctor advised the ulcer is being aggravated by the acid which is causing nausea and pain, the Zantac was not strong enough. She prescribed Protonix 40mg twice a day, I have been on that and feel great; no fatigue, no nausea, no pain! Will be on this regimen for 30 days and then slowly cut back dosage to maintenance level of 40mg once a day every other day.
I have been to the hospital twice with two ekgs done normal and a lot of blood work normal I have bad shoulder pains leg pains arms ache and neck hurts when I drink or eat anything my chest hurts and my back hurts can stress and gets cause this I get headaches daily and the pain in shoulders and arms daily
About 2 weeks ago I started feeling unwell. Pain in my stomach, pain in my back. I currently take protonix for gastritis that was diagnosed a couple of years ago. It got to the point where the dr. put me in the hospital for pain control. I saw the surgeon and he stated that I have a hernia and also have the gastritis. They changed my medications around to protonix, questren, and carafate. I was released from the hospital on Friday.
They thought maybe the fact that I was chewing tobacco (which I do about once or twice a day) was causing the pain to flare up. One day I actually tried not taking the Protonix and chewing tobacco to see if it would get worse, but I didn't feel the pain at all. The Protonix seemed like they were helping for a short time, but I'm really not sure. I forgot to take my pills yesterday and I started having pains around 3 o'clock, so I took a pill.
I called it a poisoning because she was IVed with Protonix twice even though her drs knew she was allergic.Allergic reactions to Protonix are many and are 99 times out of 100 diagnosed as something else.Unfortunately a certain number of patients will experience severe reactions to Protonix such as pancreatitis.That is why Altana,the German company who developed Protonix made Wyeth set aside monies to cover such reactions before they sold the patent to Wyeth.
