Avatar n tn Also, is there any current opinion regarding use of Avodart or Proscar while in Watchful Waiting mode? I understand there would be a likely reduction in PSA, but that new PSA baseline be established and return to monitoring of PSA velocity. Not sure what, if any, benefit this would provide. I am considering brachytherapy as an ultimate choice of treatment, but do not want my "window" for it to close. Your thoughts?
Avatar n tn The Proscar can reduce your PSA by 50%, so future PSA results will have to account for that reduction. Meaning you may have to double your next score for a true value. You need to make it clear what your status was when you took the last PSA test 1.35. Had you already been on Proscar for some time? Others have said "The increase is the key even if it is small."... Right now you don't need to worry about that.

Avatar m tn I have had two bouts of acute prostatitis causing complete retention in the last 7 years, one requiring catheterization. My PSA averages around 2.0, and I take Proscar and Cardura daily. My BPH symptoms are fairly mild causing only about one or two nights a month of nocturia, reduced urine flow, and hardly ever the feeling of urgency. I do feel like I have mild prostatitis from time to time, causing incomplete emptying of the bladder, and a more reduced urine flow.
Avatar n tn During the last two years large biopsies were not taken (even if PSAs have ben followed and free-PSA has been between 6 and 9) but when I think the April results, I am still puzzled??Should I ask a re-evaluation of these biopsies? How likely it is that I am really 'clean' of cancer under such tumor volume conditions?

Avatar f tn I went to a urologist...checked my psa.. 0.50, physical examination of my prostate normal..urine tests, culture and yeast urine test..normal..the urologist said to me you do not have a prostate problem but i am going to give you this drug called proscar anyway..this will cure any problem that you do have..Well it didn't....same problem after ejaulation only. This only happens 12 hours after ejaculation..otherwise i'm fine..no problems urinating, no pain.
Avatar n tn Propose that your partner try Avodart. I think it really helps with prostate enlargement. That is what the television commercials say anyhow. Unfortunately it also can cause a large reduction in semen production. AND women wanting to become pregnant should NEVER touch the pill as it can cause birth defects if they are exposed at all to it. You can Google Avodart read all of this yourself from a variety of sites, including Avodart's manufacturer.
Avatar m tn I had quite severe BHP and taking proscar and cardura. Had always difficulty urinating. I tried saw palmetto and it made me unable to urinate at all. I had to go to hospital.
250398 tn?1225263291 52 year old male. I have BPH and am on meds (Proscar and Cardura XL). My urine is dark yellow/gold and has a strong oder like yeast/wheat and foams a lot in the toilet. Cause for concern? Any ideas? Thanks for any insight.
Avatar n tn What is PSA density? For diagnosis, PSA+ free PSA is enough or cPSA+PSA is needed? Which one will be more accurate? Is Prostate enlargement mean DRE abnormal? Thank you in advance for your time and advise.
Avatar n tn Even a free PSA tested, but those PSA data seems untrusted? Then what will be free PSA data tested at the same lab being trusted?
Avatar n tn I read a lots about prostate and PSA test. As I can tell, as your age 63, PSA 1.84 (05/08) seems good (low). Your trend showed that 2006 to 2007 had a big step (0.7 to 1.79) because the velocity is 1.09, which >0.75/yr, but since that (03/08 will not count) is 1.84. I think it seems that your "new" level is about 1.8, but this new trend need to be proved - if you repeat it in a couple years, and it will stay in this level.
Avatar n tn I have been seeing my urologist every 6 months since the surgery and having PSA tests. the first 4 tests post surgery have all seen PSA levels of 0.01 or less. Today I had a 6 month follow up visit and my PSA has risen to 0.2. The Dr has suggested that we do a follow-up in 4 months to see if the PSA level goes back down or to start monitoring closer the rise in PSA level if it in fact is starting to rise. My question is How concerned should I be at this time?
Avatar m tn Psa on April 2009 zero and remained essentially zero at 3 month intervals (except occasional 0.01) until June 2013. Psa Sept 2013= 0.03, psa Jan 2014 0.03, psa May 2014 0.04, and psa August 2014= 0.05. The question is " should I be concerned with this elevation and if not, then at what point should I be concerned about recurrence and then what workup should be pursued and what treatment should be considered. Thank you.
Avatar n tn s normal for prostate tissue to release small amounts of PSA into your bloodstream. When the prostate grows, PSA levels increase. When the prostate is removed, PSA levels fall close to zero. Most procedures done for an enlarged prostate remove only part of the prostate, which partially decreases PSA levels. A small amount of prostate tissue may remain even after procedures that are considered a total removal of the gland.
Avatar m tn I read an article study of Japanese men with PSA between 2 and 4 which concluded "PSA-ACT is better than total PSA and equivalent to the free-to-total ratio for detecting prostate cancer in men with PSA levels of 2.0-4.0 ng/ml, and is thus useful for reducing the number of unnecessary biopsies" to Google "Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) complexed to alpha..." I fall within the category my PSA is 2.54 at the moment last monday. 4 years ago it was 1.5.
Avatar m tn In August, my PSA (Total) and PSA (Free) were 0.9 and 0.1 respectively - resulting % Free PSA as 11%. In January, my PSA (Total) and PSA (Free) were 0.6 and 0.1 respectively, resulting % Free PSA as 17%. I believe the Total PSAs are quite in the healthy range, but in both occasions, the % Free PSA came out to be low (the normal is > 25%). Is there anything to be worried about?
