Propranolol for public speaking

Common Questions and Answers about Propranolol for public speaking

Avatar m tn I have an essential tremor which flares up during moments of anxiety like public speaking or interviews. I am going to have an interview next week for a good position, is there any way I can get a doctor in the Dallas/Greenville area to prescribe Propranolol (Inderal) to me by then, using Aetna?
1243620 tn?1274794297 Does anyone take propranolol for anxiety and panic attacks? I've had crippling anxiety for my whole life. Antidepressants increase it to the point where I'm in such a state I almost pass out from hypervenitlating. I've heard propranolol is good for this, and is effective.
Avatar n tn Will any doctor prescribe propranolol to me for need based public speaking anxiety, or is the only place the psychiatrist?
Avatar f tn I have had severe social anxiety for 2 decades. I was prescribed Inderal for my extreme fear of public speaking. I was prescribed Inderal for the public speaking and tried to deliver my speech, it was a disaster, racing thoughts, mind went blank, voice quivered, hands shook, jelly legs, etc. I may not have been on the right dose, because I have always had a very high tolerance. My question is what is the highest dose allowed.
Avatar n tn Prior to that, I avoided any kind of public speaking and many social situations because my heart would race, my hands and voice would shake...I'd look like a nervous wreck, which only sap my confidence and make me more embarrassed and more nervous. In college, I'd drop classes if I had to give a speech, and my social anxiety definitely interfered with my dating life. Propranaol's made a huge difference. I generally take about 40 to 60 mg.

Avatar m tn Anyone got any suggestions for what I try next for performance anxiety (public speaking)? Propranolol is doing funny things to my head (fuzzy, blurry thinking, verging on mini-intermittent headaches) a week or so after taking it. Strange thing is, I was using it fine for about 5-6 years, then suddenly I've developed these side effects... I could live with them, but for the fact they stay around for several weeks after just one dose and it drives me crazy...
Avatar n tn 47 I'm taking 30mg of Buspar a day for treatment of social phobia. I'm also taking 80mg of Propranolol LA for high blood pressure (and for treatment of social phobia). I am also seeking council with a psychologist. I could deal with having social phobia if it wasn't for the physical evidence of it. My main concern is to rid myself of over-blushing and over-perspiring episodes that occur every day.
Avatar n tn If the same doctor prescribed both these medications for you, then you can trust it's safe to take them together.......but you must read the labels! Sometimes "together" doesn't mean "at the same time." Some meds need to be taken with food and some on an empty stomach, some in the morning and some at night. If you have any questions about how to take these meds, call your doctor or pharmacist for the correct dosing schedule.
Avatar m tn I am concerned my tutor will not be able to read my writing and I will receive a 0 it was that bad. I have never been able to do well in interviews, public speaking, etc... extremely distressing and lowering my quality of life. I have come across propranolol in my research and it really seems like the vast majority from people with similar symptoms that this drug is an absolute game changer.
Avatar m tn There are several of us on here who have a similar eye complaint: seeing a bright flash, like the afterimage of a flash bulb, when we blink, and sometimes, on upgaze. This is transient symptom for most of us, lasting anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. When the "spot" in our visual field passes over a dark background, the spot appears light. When the spot passes over a light background, it appears dark.
Avatar f tn Sometimes doctors will only prescribe the beta blocker (propranolol) or the xanax or lorazepam for just before the performance or public speaking. My guess is that you do so much of it that he feels that you would be better off with it in your system so that if you are in a sticky situation the medication will do the job and help you through. Don't be surprised if at first you feel a little tired or drowsy when you start taking the propranolol, this will go away in a couple of days.
Avatar m tn Hi, I was prescribed Inderal LA by my GP a few years ago for public speaking and have been using in on/off for nearly 5 years now. They have always been 80mg tablets, so it surprises me that some people on here say 80mg is a very high dose. I only take inderal LA about once or twice a month, although it is often 2x80mg... I have returned to the GP for several repeat prescriptions and have also bought inderal over the internet.
Avatar n tn ------------------------------------------- Propranolol falls into the broad pharmacologic category known as beta blockers. Beta blockers block specific sites in the central nervous system known as beta-adrenergic receptor sites. When these sites are blocked, heart rate and blood pressure are reduced and patients become less anxious. Because of this, propranolol is useful in treating chest pain, high blood pressure, and excessive nervousness.
Avatar n tn A lot of folks take propranolol to reduce anxiety for public speaking, etc. I'd tend to agree that they aren't a cure for PVCs based on my personal experience. I think they are more for just helping one to cope better... I saw you were going to try the Taurine/L-arginine supplements. Please do report back. Just FYI, I'm doing 1G L-arginine (nightly) and 2G Taurine (split AM/PM). I do consume alcohol at times and caffeine daily. So far so good!
Avatar m tn If not, see your doctor, there is a medication that many public speakers are given just prior to speaking that calms their anxiety for a few hours...It's called Inderal or the generic is Propanolol. I really think if your professor was going to tell you that you had to do them anyway, she wouldn't have asked you to see her first thing Monday. You still need to seek help with your anxiety for future issues.
Avatar n tn I had been on 80-100 mg of propranolol for over 2 years, for PVC's and GAD (general anxiety disorder). I think the atenolol is doing a better job of controlling the PVC's than the propranolol, but my anxiety level has shot off the charts. My GP warned me that going off the propranolol may cause a large increase in anxiety, and boy was he right. So I am stuck with a dilemma--do I stay with the drug that reduces the PVC's the best, or the drug that reduces the anxiety the best?
Avatar m tn I have Fear of Public Speaking, “socially challenged”, decreased interests in family, personal, and work related activities, often has difficulties sleeping. Family issues and son’s mild autism are big stressors are also big stressors.
Avatar m tn now, i also have a bad fear of public speaking, something i have to do a lot with at my job. so i take 20mg propranolol 1/2 hr beofre.... maybe 5-10x a month. after my own researh, i was shocked to find that inderal can trigger asthma attacks. i asked my allergist about it and she didnt seem too concerned... as my tests are saying i dont even have asthma anymore since starting the treatment.
Avatar m tn I need advise for self help for de-addiction. My wife is addicted to fortwin phenergan injection since 1999, she had left after 5 yrs & then re-started from last 2 yrs on the abdomen now. It is painful & all her body parts like arms, hips have no flesh due to this problem.
Avatar n tn i have a huge fear of public speaking, interviews reading aloud in front of others, making speaches, answering questions in groups. i go red like a tomato every time, my heart beats so hard that it leaves stretch marks on my tee shirts. my confidence is very low. do i have social phobia? can i get medicATION? what can i do to stop going red? how do i become confident again... this is ruining my life.
Avatar n tn Do research on it it is used for actors for stage fright /public speaking. Has a lot of off label uses for anxiety. Also if u feel one coming on try controlling your breath deep breaths in through the nose out through the mouth sometimes this can just stop it in its tracks before it even starts .
Avatar m tn However, as a long-time anxiety and sometimes depression sufferer, I'd question the meds you're on now. The first, a beta blocker, is only usually used for social phobias such as public speaking, not for the more generalized anxiety you're describing, and the second, Buspar, has failed virtually all clinical trials and is mainly used as an adjunct to an ssri, a form of antidepressant.
Avatar f tn Put me on propranolol beta blocker (beta 1 and 2 both, also used off label for anxiety before public speaking and such) helps some but definitely doesn't help enough to allow me to work out again...
Avatar m tn Fear of Public Speaking, “social ly challenged”, decreased interests in family, personal, and work related activities, often has difficulties sleeping. Family issues and son’s mild autism are big stressors are also big stressors.
Avatar f tn With medication, the same ones are used for all three with the exception of the propanolol, which is only usually helpful for social anxiety or public speaking fears. Because it affects the heart, if you do try it, make sure your psychiatrist explains it.
Avatar n tn I'm taking atenolol just now ... tried propranolol for ages but figured it made me excessively weak. I didn't mean to make my advice sound easy ... i'm dealing with the fact that it's seriously difficult every day of my life ... hehehe ... anyway, mail me at g_haywood***@**** if you'd like to communicate more. Gord.
338416 tn?1420049302 But when I used to do a lot of public speaking (fate worse than death for many!) in my church as a worship leader, my head started to go bonkers again. So, of all people, my psychiatrist prescribed Inderal for me, and it took care o the problem completely. Years later, my last neuro believed I had postural tremor in my right hand, specifically. Not at all in my left. My husband also told him had a wide tremor in my head at times, which I didn't notice.
Avatar n tn I am in college, and the situations which cause me to have excessive anxiety are many. Not only do I experience dread and apprehension at the thought of speaking/participating in class, but my heart also pounds uncontrollably when I am required to speak in public. I started taking Zoloft to control the anxiety (4 weeks ago), but my heart still races--up to 130bpm.
1298588 tn?1330322581 I know people who play musical instruments and take the occasional beta blocker to calm their nerves on an event night. I myself use to be scared of speaking up in public and standing up in front of people and it affected me until i got sick of it, signed up to a stand up comedy class and just did it.
