1413042 tn?1281770262 I think my situation was kept in check by this beta blocker. If I quit, I may get the same tachycardia and palpitations I had earlier. My earlier resting heart rate was 100+ with BP being around 140/90. The endo has asked for another blood test in 2 weeks time. So, should I discontinue Propranolol or take it for 2 more weeks? Or try to wean off? Would there be any adverse effects if I stop it now? How much heart rate & BP is reduced by Propranolol?

Avatar f tn How long does withdrawal from beta blockers usually last? I don't have any money to refill my propranolol prescription and haven't had it in 4 months. I was taking it for arrhythmias and high BP (160mg XR propranolol with 180mg XR diltiazam daily) and when I ran out 4 months ago I just kept taking the Dilt. hoping the symptoms were just withdrawals and that they would go away... Symptoms are what you would think, I'm just curious if to someone with similar conditions (i.
Avatar n tn I'm amazed it never affected you before too. I've taken another beta blocker called propranolol for PVCs. I'm otherwise perfect health too. Even at a low dose, no go. Shut me down. Off it, no problems. I only took it for a short while.
Avatar m tn i have been put on beta blockers propranolol 40 mg three times a day for benign ventricular ectopic beats and anxiety. im just not sure what times i should take them. how many hours do i need to wait to take another.
Avatar f tn You are substituting one Beta Blocker for another, so the warning does not apply. Bisprolol is a selective Beta Blocker designed to have most effects on the heart. Propranolol is non selective, it affects the heart and Beta Receptors elsewhere in the body. Propranolol is sometimes used to calm people as well as for its use for the heart and blood pressure.
Avatar m tn I am assuming you have esophageal varicies due to your portal hypertension and that is why you are taking the beta blocker propranolol to treat your portal hypertension is that correct?
Avatar f tn When I first was treated for my tachycardia, propranolol was the first beta blocker my cardiologist tried. It is non-selective and crosses the blood brain barrier, so you might experience more symptoms with it (like fatigue) than you would one that is cardioselective, like metoprolol. What dose is your doctor starting you with? generally it's pretty low and if you notice symptoms that outweigh the benefits, prescriptions are easy to change. Why are you experiencing chest pain?
Avatar n tn Almost 8 years ago I was diagnosed with high blood pressure. I've been taking beta blockers ever since. Most of the time even with the beta blockers, my blood pressure and heart rate would run high. 140/90 range with the beta blocker even higher without. Well now, for the past 2 weeks or so, it has been running low. I've been taking less and less of my beta blocker (propranolol) over the past few days, my usual dose is 20 mg twice a day.
Avatar n tn I know that I shouldn't be using cocaine because it can lead to death. I have been trying to stop but I have had trouble. I'm currently taking 40mg of propranolol twice a day. I originally was taking it for anxiety, but now i feel as though it is good for my drug problem and saves me from having a heart attack. Is this true? Because I feel as though the propranolol slows down my heart rate and makes my pulse lower than it would be if i just did coke.
Avatar m tn Hi there. Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker and Propranolol is a beta blocker. Often medics are cautious when a Beta blocker is being stopped(Especially on higher doses). But in this case you have just changed to a different beta blocker (Atenolol) There should be no -problem. I have been around the block with lots of different bp meds. The one certainty is that they ALL have side effects. Some worse than others.
Avatar f tn 4 days ago pcp changed my beta blocker from propranolol 40mg twice daily to metprolol er 25mg daily d/t low pulse in 40s- 50s. Been on propranolol for 22yrs for PVCS. She had me just stop propranolol and start metoprolol, been experiencing shakiness, occassional pvcs, headache, nausea, pulse still 45 - low 60s at rest and with exertion 70-90. Should she have tapered propranolol or will the metoprolol block the more serious withdrawal symptoms ie: HTN, chest pain ect.
Avatar f tn Does Propranolol...does that beta blocker make you have major mood swings?....I am having that and wondering if it is this pills doing it to me....does anybody no if they do that to u?
Avatar n tn Please note that propranolol is a beta blocker and, in addition to quelling anxiety, will lower blood pressure. Generally speaking this medication is not given if the systolic blood pressure falls below 100.
967168 tn?1477584489 The reason is, propranolol is a non-selective beta blocker and reduce adrenaline effect also on other parts of the body than the heart. I don't have symptoms when I use this medication. I think you have a positive effect, because you have a pacemaker (a dual chamber pacemaker is both connected to atrias and ventricles, by the way, and can activate them both).
1243620 tn?1274790697 Propranolol is a non-selective beta-blocker that prevents adrenaline from binding to various beta receptor sites found in the heart, lungs and certain parts of the autonomic nervous system. By blocking the effects of adrenaline on these receptors, the autonomic (physical) symptoms of anxiety/panic are typically reduced. The degree of reduction depends upon the dosage, and if the drug is well-tolerated.
Avatar f tn I discussed my occasional ED with my psych doc and we both feel it's anxiety related. He recommended propranolol 10mg just before sex. It's a beta-blocker mostly used to lower blood pressure but sometimes used for performance anxiety situations like stage fright, exam taking, job interviews etc. He's used it with other patients experiencing ED. I also do take the beta-blocker pindolol which has kept my BP at 125/70 for years.
Avatar f tn Propanolol is a beta blocker. It is sometimes used in the treatment of an advanced liver disorder (portal hypertension - varices) - BUT abusing it isnt a good thing, I know heart rhythm can be greatly retarded with its use - look online at its hepatoxicity, as I dont know...
Avatar f tn My doctor prescribed both propranolol (beta-blocker) and xanax andI have to agree with barfer except on one thing: propranolol does not help with the anxiety itself (the anxious thinking and negative thoughts) - it will only help with the physical symptoms of anxiety. To confirm this, you can google propranolol and find for yourself.
Avatar m tn Is it in general dangerous to take Beta Blocker (Propranolol) not in regular basis but whenever palpitation occurs? https://en.wikipedia.

Avatar f tn I take propranolol, a beta blocker, for akathisia and anxiety. It works very well for anxiety. I think you may be having break-through depression and anxiety meaning it is working in spite of the drugs, not because of the drugs.
Avatar m tn Hello, I've been using propranolol over a year for performance anxiety. I made the mistake to stop cold turkey for about two weeks during semester break. I used to take 120mg. When school started again, during the first week I used propranolol for two days at the same dose and I realised that blushing, high blood pressure, palpitations came back. The second week I tried to increase the dose in order to overcome withdrawl. However, the outcome was even worse.
Avatar m tn Propanonol is a beta blocker and shouldnt be stopped while taking anti-thyroid meds. It is the anti-thyroid meds causing the hives and NOT the Propanonol (otherwise known as Inderal). PTU caused hives for me. The beta blocker also helps to keep the FT3 down....which is the level that causes the palps and thyroid storm. If I was in your shoes....I would not stop the propanonol. I would ask about the anti-thyroid meds.
Avatar f tn "How they [beta-blockers] can cause depression: While scientists don't know exactly how beta-blockers cause depression, the three most commonly adverse effects reported with their use are fatigue, sexual dysfunction and depression." From AARP http://tinyurl.com/cyxbdun Another site said that because propranolol was often given along with beta-blockers it's gotta be the propranolol. LOL http://www.currentpsychiatry.com/index.php?
10894761 tn?1413637884 It's not dangerous to take a beta blocker. Also, 10 mg of propranolol is a very low dose. Don't worry about getting a slightly slower heart rate at night. On the other hand, an average of 81 isn't dangerously high, so you don't really have to take a beta blocker if you don't want to. It's up to you. What I would do (instead of spending money on seeing a cardiologist just for a second opinion) is to try propranolol for some weeks.
