Prometrium and birth defects

Common Questions and Answers about Prometrium and birth defects

prometrium

Avatar f tn (Category B, which means that there is no known association with birth defects or other pregnancy-related complication and the drug is probably safe.) Pregnancy- category B.
Avatar f tn Prometrium (human progesterone) sustains a pregnancy - my husband (a pharmacist) said in his professional opinion, he has never heard of prometrium causing any birth defects. I took progesterone for almost 13 weeks after conceiving my baby and he was just fine as many others have on this forum. I wouldn't worry about it and let me add a big congrats on your pregnancy!!
Avatar f tn your doctor is correct. Prometrium COULD cause birth defects. I was told to take it from weeks 10 through 13. I miscarried at 15 weeks and 6w4d (I have no living children) so my fertility specialist & OBGyn. thought that as a precaution I should be on it to help my body transfer from producing it naturally to having the placenta take over. (They thought that is what may have caused my 1st miscarriage). Prometrium is one of the most misused and abused medications during pregnancy.
Avatar f tn does the progesterone shots up that prevent preterm labor does it actually work it actually work??
Avatar n tn He suggests clomid and prometrium pills. I am apprehensive about progesterone pills and birth defects. These pregnancys are by the same father. Do you have any suggestions? Does this form of treatment sound like the next step? My doctor is a obgyn.
Avatar f tn Enclosed in my box of progesterone is a warning to not take if pregnant because of possible birth defects. (to the genital area of both boys and girls). This concerns me because I've been taking progesterone and I'm told by my Dr to continue into my 2nd trimester. Anyone know anything about this??? I see my Dr tomorrow and I will ask and let you all know what he says....
Avatar f tn Birth defects are actually pretty rare. I caught myself worrying about that alot too. Until I realized how rare and unlikely it was. But trust me when I tell you to please just enjoy this pregnancy and have faith that everything will be ok. Worrying so much takes away from all the joy you should have. I worried way too much and I look back and wish I hadn't. Theres nothing we can do other than take good care of our body, eat healthy, see our ob, and have faith.
Avatar f tn I know they like to limit the amount of cafine and sugar. Can you drink cafine free? That's what I did with my daughter. This time its only water cuz everything else sounds yucky! Talk to ur Dr about it and see if they have any solutions. I know my friend couldn't get enough pop when she was pregnant!
Avatar n tn Her surgerian told me whenever i was to get pregnant again i had to drink a higher dosis of folic acid to prevent birth defects, my ob prescribed me folic acid in pills which i have to take 4 of them every day im not taking no vitamins since he didnt prescribed none to me. I have to say im really concern about this pregnancy im so worried. Idk if any of you ladies had gone through something similar to this.
Avatar n tn Ladies im really concerned and cant get excited because im scared ive caused birth defects to my baby. Before I knew I was taking chinese herbs and also had a typhoid inj as I was goin to bali. I stopped the herbs at 4 weeks but wudda been after implantation. I had the vax the day before ovulation but heard the vax stays in ur system for 14 days. Anyone else worried about medications they been taking or have any advice? I just cry and cant b happy.
Avatar n tn Did you do the blood and amniotic testing? I think some defects can be picked up on an ultrasound and you would have been told by now. Is there a reason you are worried? Does something not feel right with your pregnancy?
Avatar f tn Teratogen exposure in the 1st trimester can be linked to congenital birth defects.
760797 tn?1303264540 s probably not THAT different in risk factors as taking hormonal birth control as bc is progesterone based and at levels needed to make your body essentially think it's pregnant. That being said I don't have any research done on the difference in dose between progesterone supplements for what you are using vs bc pills and the difference. AND I'm not trying to minimize the risk factors that are present in bc pills.
Avatar f tn In addition, some forms of synthetic progesterone are known to cause birth defects and others may be toxic to the fetus. With Crinone 8%, women can be assured that they are receiving natural progesterone supplementation that is safe for them as well as their developing baby.
1439597 tn?1283966253 I would like to comment on the use of the fertility drug, Clomid, for those women who were curious about the risk of birth defects, and give them the benefit of my 30+ years of research in the subject. Clomid has a long half-life and is biologically active up to 54 days after it is ingested. It is thus present during the development of the embryo, even when the drug was taken prior to conception.
Avatar f tn I have always wondered if the suppositories affect the eggs and she thinks that prometrium caps are better. Any thoughts about this ladies? This is what she ported: "My RE uses prometrium gel caps instead of progesterone inserts or shots to help with implamentation and the eggs "sticking" They said since they switched, and have started using the prometrium, their success rates have skyrocked and success rates have went through the roof!!!!
621803 tn?1302888341 I mentioned that estradiol says it can cause birth defects and to not take it if you become pregnant. She said I was ok because my levels were low to begin with. Well, I found out today (after calling to check a second time) that she has "left" the fertility clinic. Now I'm worried. I don't know that I should be but DH has been flipping out about me taking the meds, and now I'm worried that she was wrong and I'm harming my baby somehow.
Avatar f tn This is just a informational post for any mommies who may be taking Zofran and also for mommies who took Zofran and gave birth to a baby with any defects.
1488319 tn?1359537694 t remember what the drug was that caused many birth defects and such was from the 80 and is no longer on the market. I lived off diclectin for two pregnancies (morning sickness up till day they were born) and they both are health.
Avatar f tn In other words, were the percentages of birth defects the same in those taking the drug and those not taking it? Does anyone know? I'm supposed to start it tonight but now I'm worried.
Avatar f tn I just checked online on the FDA government website and prometrium IS FDA approved.
Avatar f tn I'm on thyroid med (levothyroxine) and it does not cause birth defects. I also have heart problems but nothing that could be changed with medicine so my doctor and I agreed not to try any more medicine now that I'm pregnant. I've tried several before becoming pregnant and nothing helped. My heart problem has gotten worse since being pregnant though. Good luck!
Avatar n tn A couple of other larger studies have found no increase in the risk of heart defects, but perhaps a slight increase in the risk of other birth defects of brain, bone, and GI tract. Once again, these are very rare conditions so even if the increased risk is true, the overall absolute risk is pretty small. Of course, we do not know what long term effects on a baby using such medications would have.
Avatar f tn I've been taking this medication since the beginning of my pregnancy for nausea. I can't function without it or I'll be throwing up constantly all day. Some days are better than others. I've been seeing articles and my husband said he saw the zofran bad drug commercial. It says it's been causes cleft lips and pallets, and some heart problems. I don't mean to scare anyone. I don't think my doctor would prescribe me anything that would hurt my baby.
Avatar f tn I took Bendectin for my first pregnancy. Then was told it can cause fetal anomalies and defects. She now has Stage 1 and 2 breast cancer. Is there connection?
Avatar n tn She took him to the vet and because the kitten limps, the vet took x-rays and found the hip bone missing. Is this a life threatening condition, can the kitten grow and live without a hip bone. The vet says it won't be a "jumper" but has no further reference as to the consequences. The kitten is fine otherwise. Please advise.
