Phenytoin in wound healing

Common Questions and Answers about Phenytoin in wound healing

Avatar f tn I would have the doc look at it in case there is infection inside. If the strength of the site is compromised a wound can be pulled apart even much later. I once had an abdominal incision abscess and it nearly turned into gangrene. I'd call the doc at least, and if the drainage is not clear but like pus and/or has a bad odor, I would treat it with urgency.
Avatar m tn It will absorb the weeping - a healing reaction, by the way unless the weeping fluid is cloudy, thick, and quite uniquely painful with redness and swelling around your wound, most importantly has an offensive smell - you are in the healing stage, and with a powdered topical med forming an immediate scab you will be fine. Try to keep it dry...if you wet it during showers, gently blot dry immediately, disallowing the new scab to dissolve.
Avatar f tn Competition between several healing areas for the substrates required for wound healing impairs wound healing at all sites. L = Low temperature: The relatively low tissue temperature in the distal aspects of the upper and lower extremities (a reduction of 1-1.5°C [2-3°F] from normal core body temperature) is responsible for slower healing of wounds at these sites.
Avatar m tn The vet says there is not enough skin left to close the wound again and claims that the area will eventually granulate, fill in and close up but the wound looks so daunting I'm doubting it will ever happen. I'm bringing her back every other day right now for bandage changes so the vet is seeing the wound pretty often. She's on a couple antibiotics and pain meds. Does anyone have any experience with this? Can a dog with a large, deep open wound heal up?
Avatar f tn Also poor circulation just adds to the problem of the wound healing. You can probably expect a longer wound healing time and as the dr said debridement if needed. Hope this helps and good luck.
Avatar f tn Is this wound infected or healing? There's yellow gooey thing on top of my wound. Is it a scab or infection? I'm currently under Augmentin antibiotics and also i'm putting fucidin on top of my wound as suggested by my surgeon last two days. The wound is not pain and the yellow gooey thing is just there and cannot be wiped off. It's hard. No discharge as well. I didnt wanna go back to my doc as of now cos of the charges. Appreciate the help!! Picture: https://s.yimg.
Avatar f tn If so it could be that the impetigo infection got in the burn wound. Clears up very quickly with a strong antibiotic cream.
1172359 tn?1310667693 I wouldn't give it a few more weeks - I would go ahead and follow up on the wound. That it isn't healing means either that it has a contaminant in the wound, or that the body doesn't know it's wounded. Your body doesn't need that kind of drag on its immune system.
Avatar f tn I can understand a paw wound taking its own sweet time to heal. Dogs' feet are in the dirtiest places, and they always want to lick these kinds of wounds. As to the facial wound, I suggest you have your vet take a quick look. While it may not look too badly on the surface, there may be a deep pocket of infection hiding underneath the scab. You certainly don't want to risk blindness or something worse.
Avatar m tn initially i left that as it is but the wound was not healing faster (adding to the problem after the bath the skin which is kind of healing i.e turing brown comes of and skin is red ) so far no puss. the doctor also suggests to apply hibi cleanser.
Avatar m tn Generally such wounds that do not heal are called non-healing ulcers in medical term. They could be non healing due to underlying infection, low supply of oxygen to the wound that is reducing the healing process, underlying diabetes, or due to underlying dermatitis. Wounds heal slower in smokers or alcoholics who have been drinking for a long time. So these have to be ruled out. Also diabetes leads peripheral neuropathy, atherosclerosis etc which make wound healing troublesome.
Avatar n tn Are you able to take her back to the vet? They should take a look at the wound. Try to avoid infection in that area. You could put Hydrogen Peroxide. I've done this with my kitties and it has worked pretty good. Just don't let her lick it. I'm not sure if you should cover that area to aid healing. I'd take her to the vet. She must be in pain if she doesn't even wish to eat. Good Luck.
Avatar f tn My mother underwent surgery for the removal of meningioma (7 x 9 cm) last April 2008. She is getting better but we are so worried about the wound that isn't healing until now. She was 54 years old when she underwent surgery. The surgeon informed us that due to her age, the wound healing delays. April 2009, the surgeon informed us for a reconstructive surgey but my mother refused as she was afraid of the thought to be put with anesthesia again.
Avatar n tn Today he elected to remove the stich/stint completely has the wound had reopened. The wound is about 2-3 inches long and 1 inch wide and is left to be bandaged and heal on it's own. My dog is on antibiotics and today the vet recommended he keep her during the day to monitor and change/clean the antibiotics because I am missing so much work. I am thankful for the help - but concerned about the long term healing. Any word of encouragement? Just look for some advice.
Avatar f tn If the suture line does not look good, (angry or oozy) when you check the wound, I would first clean with a wound wash solution- there is one that comes in a clear blue bottle at Walmart in the band-aid section that is anti-bacterial, and made for rinsing out wounds. Or, you could even clean with hydrogen peroxide to get the puss areas really cleaned.
Avatar m tn m now 8 days post second op and the wound is healing well and I thought all was going to be ok but the nurse who comes daily to pack and redress my wound is very concerned about the large approx 8cm long hard lump that surrounds the wound. She applied pressure and squeezed it alot yesterday and now the whole region is painful again. Up until her visit yesterday I had no pain at all. Any idea what this hard lump is? Could it require further surgery or is it just scar tissue?
Avatar m tn A month ago I was hospitalized for an infected wound in the back of my head as well as an abscess in my neck. Both were drained. Had taken a couple of antibiotics during my treatment. Now I've been off of antibiotics for a couple of weeks and my wound took a long time to close so I was given an antibiotic ointment. The wound closed as the scar is about the size of a nickle or quarter. but I accidentally wiped off what it appears to be an early form of scar in the middle of the entire scar.
Avatar m tn In a small study, phenytoin-induced seizures occurred most often in patients with serum phenytoin concentrations of 50 mcg/ml or higher.[393] Peripheral neuropathy, usually occurring weeks to months after drug initiation, has also been reported in patients receiving phenytoin. A single case report describes the onset of neuropathy within a few hours of drug administration.[9780] Adverse GI effects of phenytoin therapy include nausea/vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, and anorexia.
Avatar n tn The possible reasons for this poor wound healing is an associated infection where in you might have to be started on antibiotics; or maybe you have other problems like diabetes or hypertension that is hindering the proper healing of wound. Nutritional status is also important for good wound healing, make sure you have enough calorie and protein intake for the day. Make sure to discuss all of these possibilities with your surgeon.

Avatar f tn Folic acid supplementation in folate-deficient patients with epilepsy changes the pharmacokinetics of phenytoin, usually leading to lower serum phenytoin concentrations and possible seizure breakthrough..." It however says that initiation of Folic acid and phenytoin together is beneficial. Since you can't go back and start all over again, you can take a small dose. It has been observed that as los as 1mg dose can perturb phenytoin’s levels, You may take doses lower than 1mg/day.
Avatar n tn t have to have all of those to have an infection- if you are seeing any, get it checked out. Do keep the wound clean during the healing process as well.
