Pancreatitis treatment in cats

Common Questions and Answers about Pancreatitis treatment in cats

pancreatitis

Avatar f tn Hello Everyone, My Wiz had a dental/extraction and ultrasound today. The us showed significant kidney changes… as well as an enlarged or hardened pancreatic node I think. We are putting him on a bp med and maybe some chinese herbs eventually. One of his kidney values was very mildly elevated so I wanted to do the ultrasound and he has had vomiting on and off… it seemed to be hairball related, I treated that and it seems to help and sometimes food related.

Avatar m tn If a dog needs to be on Prednisone for 6 months, is there anything one can do to help prevent the bad side effects like erosion in the stomach and GI, Pancreatitis, muscle loss, etc ?
Avatar f tn An acute pancreatitis in my experience does not normally cause ascites. FIP is a possibility but I would be more interested in looking at causes of a low serum protein. Low protein causes a buildup of fluid in the abdomen and is often associated with a condition called exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. Protein could be lost via the intestine (protein losing enteropathy) or in the urine (protein losing nephropathy).
Avatar n tn Hello, Over the last several years, we have had wonderful results clearing up chronic diarrhea in cats like yours and cats with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) using a product called Tylan. This product is not labeled for cats but works like a charm and clears loose stool up in 24-48 hours. Tylan is an inexpensive, bitter tasting yellow powder labeled for poultry. It has no adverse side effects other than if you use too much it can cause temporary constipation.
Avatar n tn I am undergoing treatment for pancreatitis, I am 29 yrs old and not an alcoholic. What precautions I should take while undergoing treatment ? what are the chances of recovering from this disease?
Avatar f tn t start treatment with a medication that can cause pancreatitis while you have pancreatitis. I bet any doctor would tell you that. Epclusa includes sofosbuvir which lists "pancreatitis" as a possible side effect. Here's a study that says.... "There were 7 grade 3 events including anemia, neutropenia, nausea, hypophosphatemia, and cholelithiasis or pancreatitis." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.
Avatar f tn Aw, the poor sweetie. Switch your cat to a hypo-alergenic, human grade food like By Nature's Organic (no wheat, no soy, no corn, no grains of any kind, avoid high sugar content if possible). Make sure you feed wet food (6 oz per day per 10 pounds of body weight is about right) as well as dry food and lots of water. Give him yucca supplement, which is a natural anti-inflammatory.
Avatar m tn Revolution is primarily a treatment for fleas in cats and dogs but it is approved for ear mites in both.
Avatar n tn Because the vet gave us muscle relaxants and rimadahl to give for pain management, his pancreatitis flared up again. Now he is in the hospital on intravenous fluids and pain med injections. I just want to know anyone's thoughts on this? I really believe if he didn't have problems with his neck, the pancreatitis would have been controllable. But b/c of his "slipped disk" in his neck steroids is usually the treatment, but he can't have steroids b/c of the pancreatitis.
Avatar f tn He could very well be very allergic to something in the food and it is causing him pancreatitis and inflammation of the intestine. Not a good place to be. He really needs to see the doc, K? Keep us posted.
Avatar f tn Our Miss Teia was not eating for a few days towards the end of October, vet needed to give her an enema to clear her stoppage, was a huge hairball. Her appetite has returned to normal as has her poop frequency.
Avatar n tn I am worried...my cat has not eaten in two days and his stomach appears hard and distended. He is also moving around rather slowly.
Avatar f tn With repeated bouts of acute pancreatitis, damage to the pancreas can occur and lead to chronic pancreatitis. Scar tissue may form in the pancreas, causing loss of function. A poorly functioning pancreas can cause digestion problems and diabetes.
Avatar n tn thank you i would consult about yr suggestion with our doctor.
Avatar m tn I think she sounds like it is pancreatitis or Irritable Bowel. Fairly common in cats. My cat is also on Hills Z/D food only. I know some do not favor this food but it works for my cat along with the Busesonide....so I am a believer. Sometimes feeding your cat some boiled rice for a few meals will help with the loose stools--you can cook it in chicken broth. Let us know what happens.
541150 tn?1306033843 Thing is, according to them, Pancreatitis and FLD are common in IBD cats. But as to what really causes a cat to suffer from these symptoms is still unknown to EVERYONE. I was reading, and they highly recommend a diet that's low in fat. Raw foods are recommended, but as you know not all vets are willing to accept the fact that raw foods can save a cat's life. I don't really know what happened here. We moved to our new home and that's when he stopped eating.
750120 tn?1252455030 One is to discontinue treatment and the other is to delay treatment until the pancreatitis has cleared up then start again slowly. Blood work they took today will determine the course of action they choose. The pancreatitis is extremely painful but morphine is extremely effective (smiling).
428506 tn?1296557399 This is a huge improvement over a couple of weeks ago when she was in terrible shape from the med reaction/pancreatitis. It pains me to think that I can't help her more! Any ideas? Has anyone seen a cat initially dislike but then finally start to eat y/d diet? If we can get her eating it for a few months, she might get strong enough for radioactive iodine. Thanks!
Avatar n tn I had to put my 11 year old Llhasa apso to sleep yesterday because he was diagnosed with pancreatitis and was in so much pain that they could not guarantee that he would survive even with treatment. It came on suddenly...he was fine Saturday but began throwing up in the middle of the night and continued...he couldn't even hold down water and was very weak. I took him into the veterinary hospital on Sunday and he was too weak to come home.
Avatar f tn He is a very sensitive, nervous cat. His labs indicate that he does not have pancreatitis, and overall his lab work looks good. He had a full senior work up, as well as urinanalysis and the test for the pancreatitis (negative). He has been dehydrated, not eating well, nauseated and vomiting. Is the next step to do an ultrasound?
Avatar n tn I have been having discomfort in my stomach area, especially the right side, and back ache that moves up and down, since January. I have had ultra sound, upper GI, Endoscopy, CT scan, MRI, MRCP. Hida Scan, back xrays, and all the lab work, that includes blood test for pancreas and liver. They did find two side branch lesions about 1 cm each in the pancreas. The radiologist and my pancreatic specialist said they need to be monitored and no real concern at this time.
Avatar f tn It is important to remember that no treatment will help relieve your pain if you drink alcohol. A diet low in fat is necessary and sometimes it is easier for the patient to eat more frequently in much smaller portions. The doctor may recommend surgery to relieve abdominal pain, to restore drainage of pancreatic secretions, or to reduce the frequency of attacks.
