Avatar m tn 30574/abstract A six-month study of chondroitin sulfate (800 mg once daily) versus placebo in patients with hand osteoarthritis showed a significantly greater decrease in hand pain and improvement in hand function among those taking chondroitin sulfate (Gabay, Arth & Rheum 2011). The duration of morning stiffness was also slightly reduced. These benefits were not noticeable until after 3 months of treatment.
Avatar n tn Trying to address it with Glucosamine Chondroitin, Sam-e, excercise, walking, etc. Nothing seems to help for too long. It's just there and some days, worse than others. I still have days that the pain is agonizing, but I keep trying to move, not always successfully. The good news is that I DO have much more energy than I did on tx. We have new addition to our family, a one-eyed shih tzu we rescued from the pound. Connor and all the other grandchildren are great.
159785 tn?1276229625 They seriously need to tell people about those cramps. I don't take glucosamine/chondroitin. I used to take it for my joints in general, but stopped since it didn't seem to actually help. Is that something good to take? Next week I have an appointment for a second opinion on the back surgery, with another scoliosis/spine specialist. They'll probably have their own idea about what I should have done.

Some people get benefit from massage, especially if the muscles go into spasm. Other people find seeing a chiropractor or osteopath helps, depending if any joints are out of alignment like in the spine and neck. Unfortunately, there isn't a cure and it also depends on which type of arthritis he has.

U.S. Retail sales of MSM as a single ingredient in dietary supplements amounted to $115 million in 2003. The biochemical effects of supplemental methylsulfonylmethane are poorly understood. Some researchers have suggested that MSM has anti-inflammatory effects (Morton et al.
748543 tn?1463449675 For the past few weeks I have been throwing around ideas as to the best way to respond to this matter. You see a recent article ( Feb.3 , 2009 NY times) titled "Best treatment for TMJ May be Nothing" nearly made me clench my jaw to pieces. While well written, I found that the author, Ms. Brody, relied heavily on out dated and narrow perspective supplied to her by a small group of dentists.

Avatar m tn I have a problem with my right knee and I probably have aggravated the problem by playing a lot of tennis. I have tried Glucosamine with Chondroitin and MSN for over 6 months with no improvement. I was given a steroid injection which helped for about 2 days. Thing of trying Synvisc or Durolane. Any suggestions other than a knee replacement?

Avatar f tn Aside from weight reduction and avoiding activities that exert excessive stress on the joint cartilage, there is no specific treatment to halt cartilage degeneration or to repair damaged cartilage in osteoarthritis for your stage of problem. Applying local heat before and cold packs after exercise can help relieve pain and inflammation for you.
Avatar f tn Hi. I have always been physically active and have never been overweight. There is no arthritis in my family and feel that for most of my life have eaten properly. I have arthritis in my hip.
Avatar n tn What's the best(efficacious) therapy for osteoarthritic inflammation ? Glucosamine/Chondroitin absolutely DOESN'T work !, for the hard tissue, ie cartilage. Manufacturers erroneously(fraudulently) claim they'll regenerate cartilage. I took 'em for ~7 YEARS, & just concluded a 2nd trial: 6-8 weeks, as the Arthritis Foundation suggests, then 1 month reduced, 1 month without, lastly 1 month with the new "fast acting" stuff containing Hyaluronic Acid/Collagen.

Nutritional Supplements There is solid evidence indicating that glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate are effective for knee osteoarthritis. These natural compounds were found to decrease pain and increase mobility of the knee and were well tolerated and safe.

Avatar m tn Smoking interferes with blood flow to the tissues around the joints, increasing the destruction. Glucosamine-chondroitin sulfate Most arthritis sufferers have heard of these two supplements. A number of large-scale, double-blind clinical studies have demonstrated the ability of these supplements to alleviate pain and aid joint reconstruction. In fact, some arthritis experts say they should be a regular part of arthritis treatment.
Avatar n tn Topical analgesic therapy with methylsalicylate or capsaicin cream may be beneficial. Oral glucosamine sulfate (1500 mg) and chondroitin sulfate (1200 mg) taken daily are also helpful. Intra-articular injections of hyaluronic acid improve symptoms temporarily but typically need to be repeated periodically (about once every 6 months). Intra-articular injections of corticosteroid and anesthetic may also be helpful.
Avatar f tn Pain makes it difficult to exercise which makes it difficult to lose weight which ultimately causes more pain, nothing like a vicious circle to concentrate one's mind! I use glucosamine, chondroitin, cod liver oil and ensure my diet contains oily fish. TENS doesn't work, heat does work to a degree and so I try to utilise this as much as possible, hydrotherapy is beneficial (but not to the bank balance!) and I also use swimming as a method of controlling pain (though I do suffer afterwards).

Avatar f tn Second, I started using Osteo Bi-Plex (glucosamine chondroitin) tablets, it's highly recommended for arthritis relief. Third, I'm visiting the chiropractor for the heat pad treatments. I've had car accidents in the past, and have seen the chiropractor on/off. I hope these treatment options help whomever reads this.
Avatar n tn Your symptoms of grinding, popping and stiffness indeed suggest that you are having osteoarthritis. Any grinding is characteristic of osteoarthritis; locking and catching are characteristic of meniscus injuries and osteochondritis dissecans (meniscus injuries are much more common than osteochondritis dissecans); and giving way is more characteristic of ligamentous injuries.
Avatar f tn I try to avoid recommending any kind of supplement on here but I have to say my husband has had considerable benefit with Glucosamine and chondroitin (and stretching, avoiding certain foods and walking). Anyway I am only on week 38/48 of Telaprevir so I don't have much input. I know a lot of people here on the forum treated with it and hopefully others will chime in.
Avatar n tn I am truly amazed by the results. I have tried many over the counter Glucosamine/Chondroitin formulas to no avail. My mobility is already significanty better, and best of all I do not feel exhausted from being in pain all the time. I do not know what helps with pain relief in this formula. But I am extremely thankful. I can't find Flexprotex in my local drug store. I found it at an online store after seeing the commercial.
1840891 tn?1431551393 I was already taking vitamin D, C and Biotin, plus Turmeric and a Glucosamine/Chondroitin mixture. My GP had earlier suggested that it was better not to take a multivitamin, and has only recently suggested that the Omega3 (fish oil) capsules were superfluous for me, so I stopped taking them - mostly because the number of pills I'm swallowing twice a day keeps getting kind of ridiculous.
Avatar n tn This is the NIH Study I was talking about by the NIH Glucosamine/Chondroitin Benefit Proven NIH study results show supplements are effective in treating pain of osteoarthritis.
Avatar f tn Synvisc is not a drug to relieve pain, it will take time in acting as this is one of the hyaluronates used in viscosupplementation. Synvisc is a treatment for osteoarthritis which is injected directly into the knee joint. Take care!
