Common Questions and Answers about Osteoarthritis treatment works

1378884 tn?1315509445 In a nutshell, osteoarthritis is wear-and-tear on the joint. It can happen at any age, not just to "old people". It can be brought on by an injury, a congenital deformity, overuse in a sport or job. RA is a malfunction of the immune system in which it mistakes joint tissue, mainly the cartilage, as something that must be attacked and eliminated. This causes the typical swelling, redness, heat, and over time, damage that causes pain and disability.
1069378 tn?1255218732 Has anyone used acupuncture successfully to eliminate the pain from osteoarthritis? Does anyone know which treatment has had more success treating the pain of osteoarthritis, acupuncture or synvisc injections? Any help is appreciated.
Avatar f tn I think the arthritis issues that can be related to interferon are more along the lines of rheumatoid arthritis, an auto-immune disorder, than osteoarthritis, so should not make the osteo worse but might add another layer of misery if the interferon causes that in you; no way to tell in advance if it will happen. I know stenosis is bad and most people need to correct that with surgery.
Avatar n tn Cosamin DS - two per day (can be found on eBay for half store price, with free shipping) Hyaluronic Acid, 20 mg - two per day This works so well for me, I hope I can continue on during treatment. Will find out Thursday, as that's my starting date FINALLY. I'll be anxious to see if it works for you. Believe me, I've tried so many combos of so much, so I hope it saves you much time, money, and pain.
748543 tn?1463449675 For the past few weeks I have been throwing around ideas as to the best way to respond to this matter. You see a recent article ( Feb.3 , 2009 NY times) titled "Best treatment for TMJ May be Nothing" nearly made me clench my jaw to pieces. While well written, I found that the author, Ms. Brody, relied heavily on out dated and narrow perspective supplied to her by a small group of dentists.
Avatar f tn Just a couple years ago, my doc told me to lose weight so I got busy and lost 15 lbs. Darn it. I sure hope all goes well with your husband's treatment and Sovaldi works for him. Keep us posted....
7505421 tn?1391433822 Do you know what type he has? Normally during a flare up, ice works best first, then heat. When the flare starts to disappear, gently moving the arthritic part will help keep the joint more flexible. It is best that he be evaluated by a Rheumatologist who specializes in this type of disease, and they may have other recommendations.
Avatar m tn Water aroebics works wonders. I've recently been diagnosed with osteoarthritis of knee. Except I'm 42 for crying out loud! I highly suspect it's related to my taking Prevacid for 5 years (the reason I'm here). Anywho, the water aroebics and palates are very easy on your knees. Look up the pilates website and order the ring and video tapes. I joined 24 hour fitness for the water aroebics. It's worked wonders for me and I'm not a small woman myself.
1293616 tn?1272327810 if possible and if you can afford it, take a vacation to a nice, quiet area like the Bahamas or St. Thomas (where there's a lot of Americans). There was a write-up in a magazine I once read, where a cancer victim underwent chemo, but he did it at a resort, and the results were that he was much healthier and much less sick than doing it in an enclosed room in his house or in a hospital ward.
Avatar f tn post treatment. But, I did get a flu shot after treatment, in Oct. I've been more bothered with the body pain post TX than w/anything else lingering. I've had 2 episodes of my lumbar bulging disk pain that have flared up significantly-to where I needed the oral steroids (taper dose). The first one was 2 mon. ago and I'm in the middle of the 2nd one now. I have 2 days left on that dose pack.
Avatar n tn I guess all we can do is hope and pray that the treatment works for as many people as possible, and if not that it at least will alleviate any Hep C problems they may be having now or in the future. Again, thank you all for taking the time to post, as it does help. Trust me - it helped me! Hecklerr PS About dogs.....I have a Rhodesian Ridgeback and a Boston Terrier, and until a week ago, a French Bulldog (God rest his little doggie soul).
1183618 tn?1277368706 Pray, research, and demand thorough treatment. The only reason I discovered these problems was because I decided they would not find out what my illness was on autopsy. The doctors, unfortunately, is not ALWAYS looking at you as an individual, but as a textbook case. My endocrinologist (2nd in 4 months) prescribed 50,000 I.U. 2 times a week for 4 weeks and then it decreases to times a week for 4 weeks.
Avatar m tn Hello! You have to go for present day X-rays to rule out osteoarthritis. A MRI scan will diagnose ligament tears such as menisci tears or any associated cruciate or collateral ligament tears. You would need a surgical correction for unrecovered and unrepaired old ligament injuries not responding to conservative treatment. Follow up with an orthopedician. For severe osteoarthritis you would need total knee replacement surgery. Take care!

Avatar n tn I have Osteoarthritis. I've had it for over 20 yeras. Its in my hands. I recently moved to the CSRA area of South Carolina. I have been to FOUR doctors here. They dont listen. They mess with my high blood pressure, my pain management, and Asperger's Syndrone medication. The results have been catastrophic. They want to try all kinds of things, and Im tired of it. I want to go back to the meds that WORK.
Avatar f tn This past week I have accidently found a treatment that works. I have osteoarthritis in both knees and was using my tens unit. Lo and behold my rls symptoms didn't appear. This is the third day without them and believe me it is a miracle!!!! I had the symptoms everyday usually from about midday on and now I can't believe I'm not having them. I sure am enjoying it though.
Avatar n tn Is Novartis taking 1% Voltaren Gel off the market? The stuff really works. My pharmacy said shortly after I filled my Rx in Dec. '11 that they had been unable to get the drug & unable to get the medication so they could compound it themselves. Any suggestions. I cannot take po NSAIDS.
547181 tn?1255150106 I learned how to do this during 2 courses of treatment and it works very well. This technique should be part of a treatment survival guide. My favorite quote and perhaps the best advice I've ever received is from my treating doctor. I was asking about some concern that I had and he replied, "Don't worry about it." I wish you the best of success with your treatment.
Avatar n tn Diclofenac is a medicine used routinely for osteoarthritis, as are many NSAIDs. It does have adverse effects that includes liver toxicity and thus, requires monitoring of liver function tests. I must mention that many other treatment options have similar adverse effects. However, if he tolerates the medicine and it works for him, he may not need an adjustment. Long term use will need to be under the guidance of a physician.
Avatar n tn How do I get rid of the chronic stiffness in my foot(right; & hand) ? Doc surmises(diagnosis) inflammed tendons( I ran for <20 years, now ceased). What's the cure for osteoarthritic inflammation, or does everyone cop out with, "there's no cure" & go enjoy life(while others suffer) ?
Avatar f tn Steroid can be injected for pain and it is good if it works. You can try steroids for 4-5 times in the future if it works for you and remember an expert has to inject steroid always. Naproxen is fine but: remember pain killers should only be used intermittently and if diagnosed by arthritis you will have its own course of treatment. Take care!
1840891 tn?1431551393 I've had steadily worsening osteoarthritis in both thumb joints for that past two years. My rheumatologist can offer nothing other than steroid injections, but I've had those in other joints in the past and at least half the time I end up with worse pain and swelling as a result. I can't take any NSAID's due to cirrhosis. What I'm wondering is if I can wait it out will the joints eventually fuse themselves and stop hurting so much, or will I have to have surgery for that? Thanks for any help!
763362 tn?1236628390 Basically,I think that pain was due to soft tissue(ligment and tendon)injuries, which can lead to inflammation spread and stimulated your nerves,To treat this condition, find accurate location of inflammation will play main role, Because no-surgery treatment only works for inflammation from outside of spinal cord (acupuncture,chiro,osteopathy,physio...),if inflammation located in spinal cord inside, perhaps surgery is only option, even there are quite low successful rate.
Avatar f tn MSM, and Apple Cider Vinegar with the mother as a treatment, how each one works against arthritis, and which is the best to use, as I've had both work well (esp the ACV), but the MSM is expensive, but the ACV has negative side effects. Thank you for your time to reply.
700223 tn?1318169294 Additionally, a 2008 study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that participants who received acupuncture therapy for muscle soreness 24 and 48 hours after they exercised to exhaustion reported significantly less pain than people who didn't receive the treatment. In the most basic explanation, the underlying premise of acupuncture lies in understanding the energetic system of the body, which consists of Chi.
Avatar m tn By addressing the underlying cause of the pain, you will no longer need to rely on painkillers. K-Laser is a class 4 infrared laser therapy treatment that helps reduce pain, reduce inflammation, and enhance tissue healing—both in hard and soft tissues, including muscles, ligaments, or even bones. The infrared wavelengths used in the K-Laser allow for targeting specific areas of your body, and can penetrate deeply into the body to reach areas such as your spine and hip. Chiropractic.
1310633 tn?1430227691 Does anyone have any experience with, or heard of, Adequan, Cartrophen or Cortisone shots for the treatment of pain associated with hip dysplasia, osteoarthritis, etc, in dogs? My English Mastiff has developed osteoarthritis in her right hind leg, and surgery isn't recommended this late in life, and an alternative to oral treatment (and far more effective from what the vet has told us, although MUCH more expensive), is shot treatment.

Avatar n tn Hi zkw111 About 20yrs ago I had a bad fall just like yours. The docs said it was 'bone bruising'. The agony was dreadful. No treatment. Eventually I had an xray which showed osteoarthritic changes. I suspect that the 'bone bruising' was actually a compressed nerve as later research has shown a distinct S1 and S2 pathway down my leg.
