It may be associated with rheumatological disorders such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Another way crepitus occurs is when gas is trapped in soft tissue such as after trauma or surgery.
If the clicking sounds or crepitus continues to bother you, you should be evaluated by a physician (PCP). He/she may decide if you need further workup such as bone imaging or referral to rheumatologist or orthopedist.
Crepitus, in joints is associated with wear of the cartilage which leads to osteoarthritis. In soft tissues, it is associated with gas infiltrating an area where it is not supposed to be. Most often it is air.

Joint pain and progressive stiffness without noticeable swelling, chills, or fever during normal activities probably indicate the gradual onset symptoms of osteoarthritis. There are a lot of factors which contribute to this condition like obesity, age, menopause, heredity, sedentary life style, medical conditions like rheumatism, peripheral neuropathy etc.
I have been having a lot of issues with my neck and back. My symptoms started when I was 22, 7 years ago. It started when I woke up one day and had this pressure on one side of my neck, right under the base of my skull and behind my ear. I had this constant feeling of needing to stretch or crack my neck all day. Well this feeling never went away. Eventually I got the pressure on the other side of my neck as well.
The rubbing sound that you hear is called crepitus. This is common heard when 2 bones rub against each other as in rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout etc. It is also seen in the infection or inflammation of the meeting point of tendons of muscles with joints. You can consult an orthopedic specialist regarding this.

He informed me that it something called crepitus (aka subcutaneous emphysema). However looking at crepitus one of the symptoms is a Styrofoam like crunching under the skin. I do not have that; just extreme tenderness to the touch and when I move at all. I am at my wits end with this pain. Can anyone recommend something to help this go away? I am taking 800 mg of ibuprofen three times a day, and walking, and applying a heating pad. None of it has helped so far.
I should be called "feellikegreatgrandpappy" I'm 62 going on 90! I started with the neck and back in my early thirties. Also had hashimoto's- and had half my thyroid removed, the other half must have removed itself because it's no longer there!
So here I am I asked him where now and will ask my GP likewise but am really getting to my wits end the only things that come close to my symptoms are Lymes (although no rash) and decompression sickness!!
With such vague and uncommonly grouped symptoms, I wonder if crepitus might be the key to unlocking my diagnosis. Will inflammation cause it ( I have had two negative tests for both ESR and CRP)? Is crepitus common of autoimmune conditions or viral conditions? This early on in the process, I'm sure it can't be indicative of destruction of the joints, can it?
Also, when I am leaning against my left or right rib cage, I feel as though my lungs are crinkling up inside or perhaps it's crepitus? I'm a little vague on whether crepitus is a sound or a sensation as well.

It is very painful and didn't have any symptoms until 24 hrs after did the shot of meth. I felt a tiny bit miss and I used a new needle but I did not have a filter for the first time.
I am afraid that I have developed osteoarthritis in my hands, esp. in the thumb joint. I experience pain up to 5 on 1/10 scale, but not swelling. After I ride my bike my hands hurt for several days, maybe the handlebar is too big around. The symptoms developed shortly after I broke my wrist (Collies fracture) two years ago. I realize that if I have this problem it isn't going away. How do I keep the damage to a miminim? I use Ibuprofen for pain with fair results.
I have very slight crepitus in neck when i turn it to the right,. there is no sounds when I turn it to the left or up and down I can sometimes only hear it only when it is pretty quite-even running the water in the sink or car noise will drown it out. Other times it is a bit louder. It is only in a certain spot in my movement where it happens and there is no pain. I had a c3-5 fusion done 20 years ago due to a bad accident, and I was concerned about this noise.
I am 41 years old and had an emergency c-section in January. I then developed an abscess which they had to open me back up and drain. Now it has been almost five months. From a couple of years ago, my body started to develop crepitus all over the places. Started with the left shoulder, then right, then hips, then neck. This seems to happen at night, when I sleep. I always seem to wake up a little worse. Now every way I rotate my body or move things crack or grind in my body, most notably my neck. If I turn it from side to side you could clearly hear its grinding. Very scary.

I have osteoarthritis in my neck moderate and mild in lower back. Can and adjusment help? will they even do an adjustment me? i seem to be losing sensativity in my legs but dont know if iy du to oa in back nad neck.any help would be great. thank you.
